Beam me up... maybe?

*After a night out Sasha's comm device is broken, and who knows where she will teleport next. *

Features:

  • A time hopping adventure that spans approximately four rooms!
  • Cutting edge four color pixel art!
  • Retro game references!
  • No sound!

This is my first Ludum Dare, and my first solo game jam. All code and assets were created by me. I do plan on continuing work on it. Enjoy! :)

Change Log

All changes are bugfixes and should not drastically change the game experience.

Update 1:

  • Fixed a bug that caused colliders to not work in WebGL. Thanks @adnihilis and @jpiggs for pointing it out!

Update 2:

I like the graphics! Although at least with the version I played on itch.io, there was a bug with collision where I could walk all over the screen.

I absolutely love the graphics of the game !
And the concept is really cool !
The one thing that reduces the fun is some king of collision bug, where I can walk all over the screen.
But despite that, the game was really fun, congrats !

Ahh, thanks @adnihilis and @jpiggs for finding that bug! Not sure if this counts as "game breaking" enough to fix for the jam, but I will be working on a Post Jam version and for sure fix it there.
And thanks for the compliments on the graphics! I had fun doing them :)

Impressive work for just 1 person to have made. I really liked jumping back and forth in time. I wish you could have added another puzzle/reason needed to go back and forth as it was a short game, but I think considering it was just done by 1 person that its fine. I think with a bit more time you could polish it out and maybe add a nice soundtrack.

Thanks @kitkii! Glad you liked it, I absolutely agree on more puzzles, that was the original plan, but y'know, time. I plan on doing all those things (and maybe more) in a post jam release, so stay tuned!

I like the game! It looks amazing, feels like I'm playing old games! Very nice work!

Lovely graphics!

Got stuck sometimes if I teleported back on top of a sprite in that time period.

I wish I could choose when to switch between times; if I miss a beat I'm stuck for 20s waiting for it to shift.

Very cohesive design, and good use of palette shifting to indicate time period.

Nice work!

This was a neat entry! Both aesthetically and narratively gave me some Chrono Trigger vibes, which is nothing but a good thing! I do have a little pet peeve when it comes to top-down pixel games like this *not* having grid-based movement, but that's just a personal thing. It's super impressive that you were able to crank this out solo!

Ha @coleslaughter you caught it, once I came up with the idea referencing Chrono Trigger was the obvious thing, and the character aesthetic is based on that! Thanks for the nice words!

@fireslash Ah good catch. Oh, maybe the teleport issue is a feature, like you and the npc let out a horrific scream as you fuse together... hee.

Hopefully I can expand the idea to give you more to do in each time period so you have less waiting - with possibly giving you some more control of when you shift at some point. Thanks for the comments!

Absolutely LOVE the art style! Must've taken you a long time to develop the dialogues as well. Super well done!

Graphics and such are fantastic! Really cool take on the theme too, great job. Very impressive to get this all together as a solo dev!

amazing graphics.. like the feel of it.. really missed some music and sound (I also had no time to create some) moving from rooms felt buggy sometimes - like after teleporting you had to go back to enter trigger to move to next room.. also it felt like colliders were changing a bit in every phase.. overall really neat game

@krishna-kamarga Thanks! I actually want to do a post mortem to talk about the systems I built, but I used Ink (https://www.inklestudios.com/ink/) to do dialog. I customized the integration which made it easy to add and change dialog as the game progressed, or to do dialog for the same character in different time periods.

The moment I saw the screenshots, I got those Chrono Trigger vibes. Then the opening dialog of wake up, and it was a flood of nostalgia. Just throw on some Wind Scene (A.D 600) music in the background and I was good to go.

I enjoyed that it wasn't just random teleporting, but also teleporting though time periods. The pixel art is really well done and the color palettes used complement the game very well. I see everyone is already mentioning the collision bug, which I hit as well. I couldn't get the game to load here on the LDJAM page, so I used the version at the itch.io link, so not sure if that has the collision fix or not.

I had to restart it a few times, not sure if it was caused by the collision bug or something else, but I wasn't able to pick up items. Another bug I noticed that I'm not sure others have mentioned is from the start. After you're told to press Q to use the teleporter, I didn't want to right away. I walked out of the room and wanted to explore some first. However, after exploring a little, pressing Q never started the dialog with the tech. Sasha's sprite would change like she was using it, but nothing else happened.

Even still, a few restarts and I was able to get through it. Solid entry and I'm glad to see that you plan on continuing to develop this further. Good work.

Huuuuge congrats on your first Ludum Dare. Making this solo for your first entry is amazing, way better than I did my first time. I really liked the teleport animation. It was too fast for me to tell exactly what was happening, but I think that made the effect really work. Were you just stretching the sprite or was there more animation to it?

@aristurtle thanks for the compliments! Sorry you hit those bugs! The collision bug is fixed on the itch page now, unfortunately I haven't been able to repro your other issue - it should be fine to walk around and talk to others first, and I've not been able to bug it out doing so. If I figure it out I'll let you know, thanks!

@mhorth thanks! The animation is mostly just scale and positional changes (scaling up y, then moving y position up while scaling y back down, then also scaling x down to 0 to make the sprite disappear). Glad you liked it!

@aristurtle I found and fixed the bug you mentioned where the communicator wasn't working in the beginning. It was a weird bug where if you spoke to the store clerk before pressing q it would never trigger and break the game. Thanks for finding it!

I have a feeling you had a lot of fun designing this game! really like how moody it feels with the beuatiful and somewhat nostalgic pixel art, the story telling is always a welcomed touch. I wish I didn't have to wait for 10 seconds to change the time but I guess that's what the theme is all about, regardless, I really like this game! wish it had some music though :smirk_cat:

that was a fun concept to to play. I enjoy the dialogue and use of the different color palettes to show the different time periods. I had fun making it to the end.

I loved this so much!
My only sadness was how quiet everything was. Some bops coulda made this *perfect*.

That being said, it's a game jam and what you did was stunningly amazing already sooooo....
Thank you for the fun gameplay! :D

[I especially loved the aesthetic that matches old games that I played long ago.]

Nice concept all around and very effective use of color to establish time periods. Surprising amount of content too for a solo entry. Only nitpick is pixel sizes being all over the place but I know how Unity gets when working the aesthetic so I'm not gonna be too harsh on that one. Lovely game!

The art of this game is great! It's impressive for one-person to have made all of this. The puzzle and gameplay was well designed around the theme, too. I did run into a few issues while playing, one that required me to restart to beam up, but it looks like you've put out fixes.

Great jam submission!

@kiririn51 Thanks! With the pixel size I assume you mean mostly the UI (dialog boxes and the sidebar), because yeah I didn't get a chance to get those sized right. The sprites and backgrounds should be consistent though.

@maaack Thanks! Yes as mentioned the bug should be fixed on the latest update, let me know if you see otherwise!

I love this game it brings me back to older pixel hunt style RPG maker games, *but this one has good art*

Sadly I don't have any advice or feedback other then keep adding stuff to it, and great work!

Oh man what a great idea! I really really missed the sound and some great music. Like in the future you play some tech house, and in the old days you play some classic. But even without these, it's a fantastic idea and a great implementation. Was a pleasure to find the battery :)

@tattomoosa Uh oh! I hadn't heard of anything like that happening, do you mind describing what happened? How far in the game did you make it? Were you able to advance the text boxes? Did you press Q to talk to the tech?

So I think it was something weird on my end, I was able to try it again and everything worked fine. I beat it this time, graphics are nice and I like what's there but I wish it had a couple more interactions. Good light hearted mood.
