Potat-OS by JMad

[raw]
made by JMad for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Help your loyal Potat-OS computer survive the surge of popups! Otherwise, your RAM might go over capacity...

👾Play on itch.io!👾

Some mini-games had full assets done, but were not implemented during the Jam. They will be added shortly in a post-jam version, with some polishing and bug fixing!

/!\ Known issues :

  • attempting to move the starting popup may cause the game to freeze
  • ChampagneShower.exe has keyboard controls (W-S / up-down) - we sadly didn’t have time to implement the feedback animations and there were also other minigames requiring keyboard controls. However, the hitboxes are quite lenient.

Clever theme, full of nostalgia. It was kinda hard to figure out what to do in each window. I like the sounds.

First I was like "Ok... this doesn't look so impressive". But after a while I finally understood the point of the game. And it was amazing. Funny, compelling, challenging, well executed. I loved how you could draw that duck! (or more like SHOULDN't! HAHA! Little details is what makes games great, especially in a game jam!

Thanks for playing everyone! We all had a blast working on it. @actuallythemoon & @ikvelibrium I will make the sounds available on bandcamp today as a free CC-BY pack, including the 'hot pahtaterrs in yer area' one, it should be in the links on the page!

@bacilika The champagne bottle can be steered up or down with W and S or up arrow and down arrow !

That was a ton of fun! It took me a good minute before I understood the champagne one (I found your comment @marjagil which helped a ton!), I think it is mostly because that is the only minigame without a mouse which confused me! To fix this you could maybe put the input hints in the bottom left of the window?

Loved seeing another OS game, and this one was very well executed, well done!

@jvdwijk Maybe a flappybird like version is better to do all game with mouse. More intuitive. We think about it.

The amount of mini games is impressive given the time constraint. I liked the retro look that reminded me of that good old windows 95. Also the bottle of Champaign is clearly a run killer, it's very hard compared to the other mini games.

Really great concept! I struggled with some of the games at first. I had NO IDEA how to figure out the champagne one until I tried the keyboard. It was an odd one out as all the others just needed the mouse, so quite confusing. After figuring that out I could win the game quite easily. Some of the voiceovers are a bit loud and annoying. Art is quite cute, and the visual style of old desktops feels very nostalgic. Overall great idea and quite well executed, with good amounts of polish. Well done!

Loved this game. The humor, graphics, concept was straight up my alley. This take on the theme was beautiful.
I'm giving this one HIGH points.

The darn champagne shower and Tinder games were the most difficult ones.

Very funny game, reminds me of good ol fashion wario ware ! But I really couldn't understand the champagne one :/ I even try to use the keyboard to move the champagne to the head just like on the gif but it didnt appear to do anything. So i was stuck with a lot of champagne popus :( Anyway, really like the humor of this! (Hot potaotes in your area really got me haha)

05. Oct 2022 · 19:46 UTC
@tyrannas Oh! Thank you for your feedback, we didn't realize that gif could be misleading, you're supposed to make it so the bottle flies clear of everything in the room, so nobody gets hurt.

05. Oct 2022 · 20:01 UTC
For everyone struggling with ChampagneShower.exe :
- we sadly didn't have time to implement the feedback animations before the submission deadline
- the controls with keyboard instead of mouse like the other games wer not supposed to be misleading, there were originally other minigames requiring keyboard controls that we didn't have time to code into the game either, we realise the lack of instructions can mislead
- the hitboxes are REALLY lenient

Had a blast with all the minigames! Took me a little while to figure out what I was supposed to do in ChampagneShower.exe. The GIF up there was very helpful! While each the games are simple, getting good enough to beat all of them within 10 seconds whenever they pop up was quite challenging. It's a ton of content overall. Also I like how the music morphs depending on which game is currently active. Very well done!

@chitoyuu HEy! Glad you noticed the music morph, that was @vinsynth 's idea. And I had a blast mixing the individual tracks (though track 4 almost took my sanity away). You can listen to them up on spotify or over on bandcamp, we aimed to have a complete professional music production pipeline for this jam. It was professionally composed and arranged, professionally mixed and professionally mastered!

This game is really well done and a very good idea. I remember having thought of something similar just with "real" popups, what a horrible idea hahah.

I think the graphics are really original, and the whole windows 3.1 / XP feel is very nostalgic and works well together with the pop-up-hell :)

Cool take on WarioWare-style microgames. The champagne one was a bit confusing (not just because of the unique controls), but each microgame was reasonably beatable. I'm not sure what the logic is on the "Feed the plant" game. Don't venus fly traps eat bugs, not humans? Any way, fun game. Nice work!

Hey there! Really love your take on the theme and how you themed the itch.io page to the potato-OS! Have to give lots of props on the polish in a lot of the little details in art and even in soundtrack changes! My feedback is similar to others in that it took me a while to figure out the champagne one was keyboard controlled (since everything else was mouse only), and that it was super tricky to actually control! Also whats with the hate on ducks?! Overall one of my favorites from this jam, great work team!

08. Oct 2022 · 12:45 UTC
Like many others, champagneshower was by far the hardest minigame. First I didn't know you had to use the keyboard, then I thought you had to hit the guys head, and when already knowing how to beat it, it was still kinda hard to evade everything, specially with other minigames poping up in the middle of a try.
Luckly this was a common issue so coming to the entry page solved all my questions.
Besides that, I liked the use of the theme very much, it was a nice way to be able to put different minigames in a group project.
Nice work!

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this!! Personally I thought the difficulty was just right, didn't feel too hard to me, and the mini-games were fun and interesting. My favourite is hearing "HOT POTATERS IN YER AREA"! That was hilarious! I think the champagne bottle mini-game was a little too strict but everything else was solid. Great job!

Excellent idea, I found it very original. Most of the minigames were intuitive.
Maybe would be nice if you could bring tabs to front by clicking on them, that way you can select which puzzles solve first.

Really funny use of theme. I love the art and the sound effects are on point. I wish there was more visual feedback and I was confused by what I was supposed to do for some of the minigames and even if I knew what to do it took me dying the first time to figure out what controls to use on my next playthrough. It seemed really hard as I would die often only getting 2 to 3 mini games in. The picture matching one doesn't give you enough time. The cucumber is very unresponsive. I think with a little more polish these things will be fixed. I still enjoyed playing your game. Great job!

Great effort for the multiple mini-games. Also with a paint game and all the potatoes. The interfaces were very cool and the result is very pleasant.

I didn't see the game with the little guy from Lil Trash Friend ! But his presence in description is still cool. ;)

I had too some problems to understand the champagne game. But I quickly understood. And I don't know if you could have this game with the mouse.

Good job !

11. Oct 2022 · 20:50 UTC
@kalendhos Thank you for your feedback! I bugged the devs for mouse controls ahah. We have a post-jam version where it is a thing, that we will release after the ratings period is over. Hopefully we will have some additional minigames for variety, and a less random popup selector! Too many of the same minigame can be a total run killer.

GarbageSnackz.exe sadly did not have time to be implemented. Glad you liked @sersie's boi, Morgz! His game would be a small labyrinth, where you have to collect his dinner.

What a great game with a great theme, all of the mini-games were either funny or had sth fun and engaging to do! The overall aesthetic and vibe are excellent, the integration of scores and UI within the OS itself, very well done! One thing I think can be improved is feedback on whether the mini-game you just played closed on successful completion. I got used to it after a bit and payed attention but at first with all the open windows on-screen it was hard to tell the difference when I successfully finished a gama and it closed or when a new pop-up showed up.

But that's only a very minor gripe, Potat-OS is definitely one of my top games from the jam :)

I saved my potato OS! Everything was pretty easy to figure out and the only one I had issues with was the champagne shower game. Since everything was mouse-related, that one didn't seem to work on mouse for me so it took me a while to figure out. I managed though! :)

17. Oct 2022 · 22:47 UTC
It's like you took every joke about bad OSes and made it into a game  Great humor and definitely a unique approach to the theme. Each minigame feels unique - it must have been a hell of a job to code it all in jam time.

Without reading the "Known issues" section, I'd never figure out that the Champagne minigame is controlled with a keyboard (as literally everything else is mouse). That feels a bit silly. It would also be nice to actually grab and drag the things to the plant in the feeding game.

My favorite one was the Memory - both for the gameplay and the graphics (love the colors on that one!).

Fun game! The mechanics of playing several minigames in 10 seconds are very creative, to try to keep the OS functional hahaha. The graphics are interesting, and the sound is very good. The gameplay is solid, although I was a little confused on how I should play some minigames. Overall it was a very good game. Good job!
