Upgrade Jail by SoCrazzy

[raw]
made by SoCrazzy for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

The Theme was kinda weird, although all of our team members voted for this theme. We kinda had a hard time on finding a good game idea. But after a bit, we found the game mechanics for "Upgrade Jail". The goal is to kill the mighty boss, the Beholder! But you have to survive 10 rounds, but be carefull, every ten seconds you are going to receive a random game effect! It can be an upgrade or an downgrade, depending on your Luck.

You can play it here, on itch.io or download the game!

Fun little top down shooter with amazing art!

Found that after a while the enemies just filled up the screen, would've been nice if there was a bit of a break between the waves. Loved that you could try out different weapons and the upgrades gave it some great replayability!

Very polished game
Notice the use of unity's 2d lighting system, which gives the game a great atmosphere.

(Using minimal templates to build webGL avoids unity's edges, you can see the post I wrote about how to upload unity games)

Nice game! Well done. Weapon variety make a replayable game, the increasing diffculty is really good (much better than mine ;. Thanks for this great time!

First of all - the graphics really do it for me! Nice mix of minimalist pseudo pixel art and dynamic lighting, the result is a crisp set of visuals. A small problem is the scaling largely via the number of enemies - it gets so crowded it effectively gets hard to get to the beholder itself. Maybe less, but buffed varieties of enemies (even if simple palette swaps graphically, would fit the graphics theme) would help?

Overall, fun!

Graphics are great, very atmospheric. You put a lot of effort into the game mechanic, but I think it could have been more fun as a shooter with some tweaking. At some point the number of enemies is a little too much. I learned to go back to the start room because they won't follow me there.

Nice top down shooter. Game is very polished. Random game effects felt way too random, 6 minutes of nothing noticeable or almost immediately fire rate in the negatives that fires every frame (which reminded me of GTA 2 flamethrower). The fourth enemy type `(shouldDie? "did not seem to want to die":"had a health bar which indicated that they are killable")`. Love the weapon select area/mechanic, all the graphics and atmosphere. All in all well done.

Should I write something else hahaha? Actually the idea is very simple. I love top-down shooter, they can be played endlessly. Good job!

The enemies seem to spawn too much making the whole room fill to the point that when the boss spawns you can't even get to it.
Luck based gameplay is not a good idea because you can't become skilled at it, you should maybe have had a bit more control over the upgrades like picking from two or something.
The game looks pretty neat and the decals on the map are nice.
It would also be nice to have the creatures face the way they are moving.
Tip: It is a good idea to have friends playtest your game before the game ends to see how new players fair.

I think this has a decent look and a really fun little concept, but the upgrades themselves are kind of lacking. I think if you want a game like this to be satisfying, you really need to *feel* each upgrade. Having most upgrades be minor tweaks to your numbers just doesn't really do it. The gameplay was fun enough until I got overrun.

Nice survival game! It is hard to understand what upgrades do sometimes. Maybe it would be interesting to introduce some kind of choice to make the player less passive.
The graphics are really nice :art:
