Being a Video Game Monster! by g_o
** ALL PLATFORMS WORK NOW! (WINDOWS WORKS REGARDLESS) **
** LINUX VERSION IS ONLY 64 BIT OTHERWISE USE WINE (WORKS PERFECTLY!) **
My third compo.
A mini game about what would happen if YOU were the bot and the computer was the player. You are only able to jump and carry stuff around while the computer has cool abilities and coins. But, the show must go on! You must fulfill your duty and kill the player!
It's sort of a platform puzzle even though it's dead easy, but yup here we go 48 hours and with all the trouble I had - I think it's a solid prototype considering how bad this LD went for me. BTW I slept something like 8 hours in the last 3 days (72 hours). So... have a happy LD!
I very much hope you'd like it, it's not long as I had lots of BSODs and crashes, that led to frustration added to me not liking the theme and procrastinating. (well double the latter)
Also, was using Blender Game Engine for the first time. The only time I used it was in this compo and three days ago preparing to it, that's it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Tools:
*Blender & Blender Game Engine - in that regard I'd like to say - DONT USE THIS ENGINE FOR COMPLICATED THINGS NO MATTER WHAT!
It's not yet finished to my taste, and it got TONS of bugs!
*Audacity - of course!
*Game effects (for making mix track) - http://www.bfxr.net/
*musagi - http://www.drpetter.se/project_musagi.html
*GIMP
-----------------------------------------------------------
Extra Info:
*** The in-game track was made only from 8-bit sound effects mixed :P ! ***
*** If you're stuck: the goal is to make the blue player touch the red platform. There is a color-mechanics correlation. ***

Are we supposed to be able to get on the big red platform? I didn't seem to be able to jump that high.
I like your use of the theme. Pit the weak monster against the invincible player is really interesting.
I'm not sure what the end goal was, but exploring that theme more, maybe with you being one of many easily disposed monsters, suffering more humiliation at the hands of the player, the player easily respawning while you get a game over screen. Something like that might have added to it a bit more.
Good job!
It's a puzzle platformer so part of the game is figuring out what to do. Telling what to do would ruin it but all I can say is - think about color-mechanics correlation.
The camera movement was a little hard.
You should add a "Slow Parent" to the camera object. It makes the camera lag behind so it looks better.
WOrk on animations :D Great little game. Nice music too.
Thanks so much for playing :) !
Thanks for playing :)
I get this every compo haha XD
You figured it out! The truth is that you had to get really close to the house and time your jump according to his shooting rate such that you have 3 jumps (since you die in the fourth). The house had inside it a text that said "Thanks for playing" :)
About the camera - I know it's a bit hursh - as said it's due to bugs of the last minute so I hadn't had time to smooth it.
About the controls - I agree they are cluncky a bit. You need to press Space and only then move. Once again had no time due to polish the game in that respect.
though I'd be glad to know why =]
@tmpxyz: Indeed! thanks for the appreciation! It's totally a neglected engine which made it hard to get hold of it - like the lack of documentation and tutorials.
Nonetheless, great job and a solid game!
I'm sorry about it.. had no time polishing it...
Thanks for playing though!
Though it has no gameplay in the familiar sense it was funny and I thought it's nice and indeed share the same view as mine. I actually searched deliberately the keywords "game monster" and it turns out that you and I are one of the few to think of this rather than the destructive context, human evilness driven side of the theme.
Thank you very much!
Blender is an awesome tool but the BGE... ^^
Its a compo entry which means its solo. I hope this isn't something you post for every jam by copy paste.
I can't play with WASD controllers because of my azerty keyboard so it's hard to avoid beeing touched by the ennemy.
I also made my game with BGE if you want to see it...
Well I'll go check it =]
Thanks, and sure! np =]
