Everybody Hates The Fishboy by cgriff

[raw]
made by cgriff for LD33 (COMPO)
Born of an unholy tryst between man and fish, the Fishboy has long been a subject of scorn and derision.

But today he says: "no more".

He has begun his escape from captivity, and he will give himself the energy he needs to survive by destroying the surprisingly ineffectual military drones that stand between him and the open sea.

Avoid the mines. Destroy the drones. Escape the lab.

Become one with the Fishboy.

Controls:
"S" to Dive
"W" to Leap
Dive deeper to leap higher!

Additional Notes:
For the standalone Windows Unity build, I would recommend these settings:
Screen size = 1024 x 600
Windowed = Yes
Quality = Fantastic

Nice idea, controls feel a bit clunky at times and the jumping feels a bit like you dont go as high as you should sometimes.. but not bad really

I feel the creator took a very narrow view of what a "monster" is. On the one hand, a deformed child who just wants to be left alone to swim off into the sunset, and on the other, a world that puts a child in a tank and sends drones and mines to kill him while onlookers watch and cheer for his death.

I did love the two versions of the music track though.

Dynamic music? Way to go! :) I think my ability to jump got capped somehow, I went really high one time and from then on no matter how deep I dove, I could only get one fish-height out of the water.

First off, issues with the downloads:

Windows - I get a "Data Not Found" error: "There should be 'EverybodyHatesTheFishboy_Data'
folder next to the executable"
Unity should have made a data folder in the same directory as your .exe, make sure to include that in the zip

Web - there's a "development build" watermark - make sure to unselect that when you build a finished game

As far the game, I couldn't seem to get the leap to be consistent. Sometimes it'd be a proper full-screen leap from a very short dive, but usually it ended up just being a tiny splash no matter how far down I went.
A tiny bit more movement speed (both horizontal and vertical) would have helped a lot, the game feels very sluggish.

This was a lot of fun to play! But the controls feels a bit unresponsive and jagged, but that's okey concidering the time limit.

A bit clunky, but interesting idea. Audio got a bit annoying. Feels like it has a lot of potential though!

Love the music change for when below and above the water. Power jump doesn't always work good. All in all nice art considering its made from basic blocks.

Now that I read the comments, I'm wondering if there is more to the game than the phase where you go on and smash drones? DesignerSnap talked about "Great writing and humor", but I haven't seen writing...
About the game I played, it's well done, although as other said, a control of the Fishboy with more "physic" would have been a plus (and I think I too had the bug where I couldn't jump high anymore even if I dived, but it worked again later on...)
That Fishboy looks quite sexy :P

I felt i could die just indefinitely, is that right?
i liked the minimalist graphics, and it could have been great if the gameplay wasn't too rigid cause i felt slow. but otherwise it is nice, keep up! :)

Poor fishboy, I cared about his death! Really enjoyed playing it, took a game to get used to how much height I could gather :)
