Mushrooms of the end by Pordrack

[raw]
made by Pordrack for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

TW: Death, end of the world

Years ago, mushrooms ended human society. Now, other kinds of mushroom allows you to live prosper by trading their crystals.

These mushrooms take years to grow, losing even one of them would be disastrous, so try to keep as much as you can by watering them and protecting them from pests.

To prevent their inevitable death even longer, use the cristals harvested to buy more water or frog turrets to kill insects automatically.

Jump from slice of life to slice of life, trying to live as long as possible, trying to keep your farm intact as long as possible. But don't forget, sooner or later, everything ends...

Team: Pordrack and Diriann for code and level design, Shrimpiano for music, Shrimpiano and MopMoppy for sound effects, Pendul and Pordrack for graphics. SubjectOmega also helped us when we encountered a technical issue.

Note that every asset that is derived from a photo used a base that wasn't made by us, which is why we prefered to opt out of the graphics category.

How to install: Open the itch.io link and play from browser. Or download the .zip Windows version (most of our tests were on the browser version so we reccomend you play this one)

How to control the game: everything is played using the mouse, an ingame image helps you understand which buttons do what (but we hope that the game in itself is clear enough so you wont need it)bluh6.png

A really unique game! I Loved the sound effects and the narrative. It's quite a resource managment challenge. I would add the ability to move between mushrooms with the arrow keys.

Seconding the arrow keys suggestion, as well as a hotkey to toggle the watering can. Really fun to manage, but the mouse movements are a little much to keep track of. Nevertheless very fun and well done!

an interesting entry, the game is very particular. nice job with the sounds, also the graphics are quite good (the art style is different for almost every object...). overall good job!

This game is quite unsettling and exhilarating at the same time. The feeling of inevitable doom is too strong.

Nice game, pacing is a little bit too fast in my opinion. It would be nice to have the shop items from the beginning of the game because the start is kind of difficult.

good use of sounds. limiting the player to only use the mouse does kinda feel bad in a multi task focused game.

I really liked the idea behind this game. I ended up letting my other mushrooms die and just surving on 1 mushroom and I won just by doing that. A few balance changes would be good. Definetly a promising game 🙂.

Shrooms! I liked the heat wave, creative idea  Maybe a key shortcut for water can could be added, but it may've been intended like this, so it'll be harder  Another idea would be to make more types of bugs, great job though!

Interesting! Kind of a tower defensey vibe. I wasn't sure why the shop wouldn't open up, then suddenly I had two shrooms but wasn't fast enough to water the other. And my crystals were gone? Confusing.

@eli-delventhal Hello, thanks for your feedbacks. We disabled the shop in the first level to try and give the features progressivily, but we can see how it was the bad idea to juste remove the buttons without removing the tab. After a said time (the one given on the timer) you change level and in the second, you get a second mushroom. If you're talking about the crystals of the shop, they're the currency and only last for a level, which is why you haven't had them on the second one.

An interesting twist on a clicker game that fits well with the theme. Also the audio was great.

Unique take on art style. Nice music, and fun sound effects :) "Frog turrets" I never though I saw going to see these two words together, but it works nicely. The game is really fast, I kinda wish it was a bit lower, becuse there is a lot of clicking. Anyway, nice and unique game!

Interesting game! I liked the worldbuilding and sound effects! I had a hard time keeping more than one mushroom alive. Maybe it would be better to have all the mushrooms on one screen (or at least something to tell you how they are doing, what their water level is and if there is a bug). Other than that, good job!

I came into this not knowing what to expect, but I really really enjoyed it (:D)! It was super fun to play and I enjoyed every minute of it! A few things I'd like to note that I noticed, though; I found it difficult to keep track of all your different mushrooms, so I ended up just letting my other ones die, and focusing on the mushroom it started me on! I also had some trouble with refilling my water--I thought it would just add to my supply, so I was wasting money buying more water, not knowing I had to be empty to refill it... Overall, great game! :)

Wow. I thought I posted this but didn't press enter, I guess. Whoops! Here's the review:

I enjoyed myself with this! It took me a bit to figure out that holding the mouse vs. clicking was the difference between water and smashing bugs. Also that first wave was quite the hilarious shock, so I appreciated the warning that pops up. I played it a few times and made it to the second level with the additional mushrooms, but couldn't quite get the hang of keeping more than the original alive.

Still a really fun experience and a good, simple idea that is executed well. Congrats on finishing!

And thanks again for feedback and review on The Apocawiz! I really appreciate it!
