Penguin Snoir by Sarah Alexa

Agent... We have chilling news! Dr DoonWaffle has created an ingenious new cooling solution for his robots... so effective in fact that they've become Snowbots! They're out of control and now seek to chill with the city folk!
Your mission should you accept it:
Take down Dr. Dunewaffle's rampaging creations and save Glasnow from Snowmaggedon! Their chill-dren are great in number, too many for a single Penguin to take down but... you're our only agent in the vicinity. We need you to put your life on the line and defend the city long enough for everyone in the town to put their heating on and give the Snow Patrol time to arrive.
Controls:
Keyboard: WASD / ARROWS Mouse: Click and hold Touch: Touch, hold and move
The only control is movement, all the attacks are done by Jibbles!
Gameplay:
Snowbots will endlessly spawn around you and get stronger, faster and sturdier the longer you survive at set intervals. Upon death, enemies drop XP orbs and also have a chance to drop health or extra time. Drops will be attracted towards the player once you are within range.

Goal:
Your goal is to prevent both the timer and your health from reaching 0 for as long as you can. Death is inevitable, you can only delay it.

Entry Info:
This game was made for the Ludem Dare 50 Jam. This is the first game jam I've entered in about 10 years and due to issues with being able to focus and concentrate, the first time I've worked on a game in quite a while! I stumbled on Ludem Dare 50 around 12-14 hours after it started and it just got my creativity and motivation going.
For this jam, I used Construct 3 for the first time and managed to tape together this game in around 2 days between life stuff. For art, I used Aseprite and Construct 3. For Audio, I used 1BitDragon.
All assets were created by hand and somehow, I've managed to finish this! This has been a lot of fun and the most fulfilling thing I've done in a long time. I think I can fairly say I have the game dev itch back! The game might be basic but I feel it fits the them of "Delay the Inevitable" well and I hope it's enjoyable enough for a few minutes of your time.

@krstinamay Thank you so much! I might work on this more and make everything better. Glad you realised the clocks ans xp gems are good haha. I'll have to make that clearer! <3
Sweet, nice, simple and short experience. Good to have sound effects, music and all items / objects with their own unique art!
Also congrats on managing to finish the Jam while you started so late!
Thank you for your entry :)
@godsboss That's one thing I really wish I'd had more time to fix. It's not fair at all as I sadly didn't get the time to prevent it. Thank you for playing though!!
@geojax Thank you! Also thank you for the great feedback! I agree with all of that and wondered how long until someone found the don't move method haha. The way the controls work is you move about and the character targets and shoots at enemies automatically at set intervals so all you have to work on is positioning yourself. It is hindered a bit by the enemies just spawning on the player or in your face however. I'll have to try working on it more outside of the jam soon! Looking forward to at the very least seeing how it is when polished.
@oc1d Thank you so much!! It looks like you managed to last a good while too! I'm just glad I was very conscious not to allow scope creep!
Interesting little game, I've slowly been starting to appreciate these kinds of games more and more (maybe I should finally give in and get vampire survivor?)
The theme is definitely in there, gathering clocks to delay the inevitable: your defeat (I suppose?)
With the art and audio you've combined, together with the gameplay, I feel like you've set up quite an interesting mood. Definitely way different than all the death and "apocalypse" trends I've been seeing a lot this LD.
The gameplay itself was very simple and there's not much else to be said; makes me wonder what kind of additional options you would've come up with to make the game more unique, had you had more time!
I really liked the white border around the penguin by the way!
Oh, when you have a repeating sound effect such as the snowballs being thrown, it's always nice to vary the sound effect a little bit. I'm not sure how it works in construct but in many engines you're able to play a sound and define its pitch; in those engines you could play the sound effect with a random pitch change of 5% of the original pitch every time and it'll quickly stop it from sounding too repetitive. Might be worth looking into for Construct as well if that's something you care for!
Thank you for your submission!
I definitely like your suggestion on the varying pitch. It's something I could have done and I think it would take only a minute to implement. I had to quieten it a fair bit but I didn't even think of varying it a little. Thank you! Here's hoping I can get to 20 ratings haha.
I read somewhere that this is your first jam in a long time, shared the game with some of my LD friends, hopefully you make it to 20 ratings!!
Thank you for your feedback! Lots of very useful and constructive things in there!
@kepsert Thank you very much! Here's hoping! The last time I entered a jam was like 10-ish years ago which feels crazy. So old that updating the Unity project breaks it and the WebGl player is too old to run in a browser these days! I'll have to try and do more game jams as it really sparks off making learning fun!
Controls and plays well. Enemies spawning on top of me was a bit of a buzz kill, but generally a tidy gameplay loop that's very complete for something done over a game jam. Good stuff.
I like the artstyle, I enjoyed the fancy noir duck like Humphrey Bogart. Also good idea on setting up a minions mechanic, leaving you room to focus on movement and collecting items. I enjoyed it and I would recommend adding feedback when you get hit. You can use the game: Vampire Survivors as inspiration.
Thanks for your feedback and see you in the next LD.
Well done.
