Procrastination Simulator by dot_dev
Made for Ludum Dare 50 in a small team of 2 people because our artist unfortunately had to drop out.
What you need to know:
Collect controllers, avoid books, get a bad grade. Move with A/D or Arrows.
Story / Idea / Theme integration
You are the devil on a student's shoulder, keeping her from studying for her exam. Distract her to keep her focus (The bar on the left) low so she doesn't study and get a good grade. You won't be able to keep her focus at zero though, at some point she will inevitably study. Books help her focus while games distract her.
The American grading system
You have letters from A to D and then F with A being best and F being worst. A to D can be followed by a "+" or a "-" to indicate that it is a relatively good or bad grade. F is just F. You get an F with less than 60%. If you get an F in school, my condolences. If you get an F here, you mastered the game!
Controls
LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to move or
A and D to move
SPACE to start a new round

I don't know if i understood the game. First time i thought i needed to collect everything. After the timer went to 0, the game slowed down and nothing happened. So i tried again after reading the instructions more carefully. This time i collected only the controllers, but the same thing happened when i reached the end of the timer. Am i playing it right?
I loved the particle-effects when you bump into stuff, looks great!
Well done!
@p0l4r On the end screen there should be a grade that pops up. I don't know how that could fail to happen, maybe it was just not very readable. In any case you should be able to just press space and it should restart. If that doesn't work I am absolutely clueless.
It would be nice to have different sounds when you bump into books and controllers
Anyways I had wonderful procrastination time, thank you :)
The way the devil's face also followed the character as well as the trident was a nice touch making the game feel more dynamic. Similarly, the particle effects were cool especially with the way they can be pushed around/explode in reaction to how they are hit. I would say that I found the score at the top quite difficult to see/read. The pixel font went nicely with the graphics but was hard to read on top of the pixel art especially at a glance whilst playing. Maybe just a solid underlay for that part might have been nice. Great job overall on the graphics though considering neither of you were supposed to be the artist!
The music fits nicely with the theme making it feel urgent and sound effects are always nice feedback. The pitch variation made it more dynamic and not annoying although I agree with @aquata in that different sounds for the books and controllers would have been nice since that would also give audio feedback on how well you're doing. If there wasn't time to make/source different sounds, you could maybe have done something like have the book sound effect pitch range be lower and the controllers be higher so you can use the same effect.
Overall, great job making a pretty nicely polished and complete game with two people! Had a lot of fun playing!
We might honestly have managed to fit different sounds in there if we'd thought of it but the original idea was to make a lot more items so we essentially just saw them as one thing. Will keep that in mind though. Thanks again!
