Walterfall by Ulisses

[raw]
made by Ulisses for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

Walter is indeed a slacker! Now on vacation, he won the title of most sloppy tourist in the place! Heavily ignoring the danger signs, he decided it would be a good idea to take a nap in his inner tube by a river. Upon waking up, who would have thought? I was about to fall off a huge waterfall! What now, Walter? Help him dodge the objects and paddle as fast as possible!

Tip! The umbrella can protect you (but for a short time!)

Good luck, Walters!

Boa sorte, Walters!

Nice game. I like the art style and the controls.
The sound of falling items gets a bit annoying after a while.

Simple and neat. The umbrellas are a nice touch. I really like the controls, although I think it might have played a little better if it was portrait mode instead of landscape since that way you'd have more space to see stuff coming towards you. Nevertheless, it was actually quite addictive.

I made it past 5000!

@anaxie-studio well done! It is a great score. We made that version for LD, but we will publish in portrait soon on android. The main goal is at the ending have a game easily portable. Thanks for playing :dog:

@martinek yes, we think the same, all the mechanics are made for publish to be ported for android. Will be on the play store soon. Thanks for play!

I avoided the parasols until I got hit by one and noticed it was actually a bonus, not an obstacle xD

I enjoyed my time with this one-I always have a soft spot for games that require you to use two buttons to control a character that slides around the place to avoid obstacles. The graphics all look nice, but the audio quickly got grating personally. The music is fine, though it did start to bother me after about 3-4 minutes. The sound effects for objects falling, though, was pretty persistently annoying. I wonder if adding some randomization in the pitch for the sound effects when the objects fall off would help (though I can't tell if pitch is randomized already).

Overall, simple and fun game.

Very original and true to theme. Nice art and music. I had fun.

Perhaps allowing keyboard controls would be a nice improvement, because my wrist is sore from trying to keep Walter going over the edge!

Simple, fun swimming game! Really liked the mechanic of needing to move left or right in order to go up. Would love to see more obstacles with unique behaviors, and in general a harder progression over time. Nice work, guys! :smile:

Awesome work!

I liked this simple idea and good implementation. The controls were responsive and simple to understand. The assets are really crisp and I feel the collision was fair.

A few recommendations and notes - I think that it would have been a small amount of effort for a large amount of gain to have a few more versions of the sprites (even just rotated or colours changed) to add some variance. Additionally, a bit more visual feedback when you got hit would have been good (like a particle effect, or a quick sprite or something).

Overall, a really tight entry that achieves what it seeks to do. Thanks for submitting!

I got confused at first. The way the controls were displayed made me think that "left click" and "right click" were "click on the left of the screen" or "click on the right of the screen", not the double mouse button. But that's probably because my game was based on side of the screen compared to the character, lol!

It was fun, I like the wacky carnival music. Umbrellas could stand out more visually as a "good" item in order to be more intuitive without having to read the description.

@papabirb same i also thought it was click "left" of the screen to go left and vice versa xD

game was fun and simple and i swear i heard some thecheeseman sounds :eyes:

The art style is great! And the music and sound effects are well chosen (though the item falling sound does get a bit painful haha). One thing you might try is slightly randomizing the pitch of the sound effects that get repeated often. I was having the same annoyance with very repetitive sounds, and then I added one line of code before playing the sound:

```
_audioSource.pitch = UnityEngine.Random.Range(0.95f, 1.05f);
_audioSource.Play();
```

Randomizing the pitch up or down by just 5% instantly took away the repetitive pain for me.

I especially want to call out the extremely responsive controls. I was worried there might be some animation-locking or something where I can't change directions as quickly as I might want. Nope, they were perfect!

Fun game - music sounds like clown music so that gives me nightmares. I loved the addition of items, I think it could make a fun mobile game with more items, map variety, etc kinda like a temple run situation (not exactly the same though). For a game jam, it was a pretty complete package

Fantastic art and music and a really unique movement system!

Obviously the game would benefit from more difficulty over time and a greater variety of obstacles, but as is, I had fun!

My highscore:

Good game easy to play but it lacks diversity in the elements to dodge so that it is less repetitive. With someting like "power-up" to recover it would make the game even more dynamic. Congratulations for this creation!

A great game with a nice gameplay loop and really repetitive SFXs. After a while i realized that the best way to survive was by just smashing my mouse and keeping my ground in the top left corner. I managed to get a score of 18974 this way and dropped only because my hand was dying.

Other than that, a really good entry! Good job!

As other already said, some increasing difficulty could be interesting, also the music is quite anoying after some loops ^^
Keep track of the current best could be interesting to add too.
But despite of all those details, it was fun ! :) Nice entry.

Uma coisa que eu sugeriria é colocar desenhos representando os botões do mouse, porque de início eu também achei que era pra clicar dos lados esquerdo/direito da tela.

Hiii!

Thank you for the submission.

Cute art, fitting soundtrack (even though audio is not part of your categories, it does help set the mood, good job!), responsive controls and a somewhat addicting score chaser. I could see this working really well as a mobile game.

There's a nice HC with an interesting idea. Maybe the controls could be much easier, and more understanding to what entity does what, also split into levels and some narrative on the falls (maybe around the globe). But it's just me thinking big. Overall, cool game, thanks for sharing!
