## Defend Fort Riot

You are a dictator and want to stay in power with all your might. Your people are dissatisfied and want to overthrow you. How long can you delay the inevitable? More and more rebels will attack your fortress. Sooner or later you will lose. Want to bet?

Defend your fortress. (1)

If the fortress falls, you have lost.

Use the military (2)

The most versatile troops are in the military base. But be careful: If the military base falls, you lose your most efficient force.

Use the store (3)

Buy new troops or blockades in the store. You will automatically get more money. After all, a dictator collects taxes.

Main-Screen.png

## Shop

Palace guard

The Swiss Guard works for you as a palace guard. They are your best unit. Unfortunately, the Swiss demand a lot of wages and are not the fastest...

Police

The police units are fast, but unfortunately weak and perish quickly.

Blockade

Blockades are very cheap and can give you some breathing room. Unfortunately, you only hold off the rebels for a certain amount of time. Attention: Blockades can only be moved once.

Army

The army is much stronger than the police, but unfortunately also slower. Attention: If the military base falls, you can't buy a new military unit.

## Shortcuts

| Key| Effect |----------|:-------------:| | q | Run back to base | s | Open shop
| Space / ESC | Pause | Ctrl / Shift + [1-0] | Assign selected troop to the number | [1-0] | Select the assigned troop | Tab / Shift + Tab | Cycle and select through the available troops (Shift reverses the order) | Left click | Select / move selected troop (dragging the selected unit is also possible)

## Game Modes

Defend Fort Riot

Default game mode, where you have to buy troops to defend your palace. The game is over once the palace health reaches 0.

Other, hopefully also, fun game modes:

1v1: Try to survive 1 vs 1. Good luck.

Doomsday: You have exactly one palace guard, which is indestructible, but unfortunately slow and there are far too many rebels coming at the same time. You have no change...

Instant Kill: This time you have an indestructible police unit. Rebels are wiped out immediately. At the beginning everything is relaxed. The few rebellions are quickly eliminated. Unfortunately, the rebels reorganize again and again. More and more are coming. How long can you delay the defeat?

Rebel Collect: You can't destroy the attackers. You have a police unit, but it is much too nice. The police simply take the rebels with them. But be careful, if you move away too fast, the rebels can escape again. Also, you can't collect an infinite number of rebels. Keep the attackers away from the fortress if possible, otherwise you have lost.

Push: Again, you only have one police unit. This one is very scary. The rebels are retreating. So you can't wound them. As soon as you move away, the rebels approach your seat of government again. It is hopeless...

I like the oppressive soundscape and the contrast just after you start the game

I think this one killed me ...

@velvetlobster The have about 7 different spawn sounds, ranging from "It's a trap" to "The earth is a cube".

@miguel-fernandez-tormos Thanks for playing

I will be sure to play yours as well.

Instakill was great fun! Darting out to the first visible rioter quickly becomes too much of a risk so you have to be patient and plan a sweep. It reminded me of the dash and melee mechanics from RUINER.

This is great!

I love the student protestors chanting "No more school!", haha... that's awesome. The difficulty felt like it scaled well. You also did a good job of making some relatively complex interactions clear in terms of the effects that they were having. The only issue I really had was that selecting different troops felt a bit awkward and unintuitive. To be fair, I think a 230 second career as a dictator is about all I deserve anyway.

Good job!

@krunk Thanks for playing  I don't see a game when I look at your profile, is that correct?

@human-writes-code Thanks a lot, will try out yours just now.

Selection is also possible with [Tab] to loop through the available troops.. I forgot to mention it in the description

hahaha It really stressed me out (in a good way)! I played the doomsday mode and the defend for riot, but I must say the Doomsday is super fun! Congratulations because the idea is cool and it's an intelligent way to use this LD topic!

Good game with an impressive amount of game modes for a jam game. I do wish there was more information in game about how to play rather than the large amount of text on the game page.
Very impressive overall

Cool game, took me 3 tries to figure out units heal at their home base, that made it quite a bit less hard :D might be good to mention that somewhere!

"It's a trap" is going to be stuck in my head now thanks to you villains.
I like the take on inevitable, the mood is very oppressive but the overall message there is that dictatorships cannot last.
Nice.

Interesting game, the controls are really awkward though. RTS style controls would probably work best here.

I had a lot of fun. Interesting idea executed well. Difficulty might need adjusting as I felt that once I had a soldier I wasn't really going to lose. I didn't try the other modes though (kudos for adding several ways to play!).

Audio might need some balancing though as shouting mobs gets overwhelming very quickly :D

You're very welcome :smirk_cat:

@alexio-games

Barricades can only be moved once. There might be an issue that prevents you from sending a unit to the same position though.. I will look into this. There is always the possibility to use [Q] to send troops back to their home base.

Fun concept, but some sounds are too loud compared to others and together they sound horrible when there's a lots of protesters

@mibehu Thanks for playing. There is also a Monty Python reference in there. did you spot it?

@spaint Thanks for playing. We noted that some sounds are unaffected / ignore the sound settings. Will check.

Well made game! I like the concept and execution overall. My biggest criticism is around knowing which police force is currently selected. Once I had multiple police, I was getting hung up on how to quickly select and move them -- I had the idea, but not the right support from the UI to execute.

Some potential additions that would've improved my experience:
1. Make the currently-selected police unit highlighted.
2. Make selection hotkeys (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4) for selecting the police troop instead of only click or drag.
3. Give some animations to juice things up. The "combat" of simply standing on top of each other was lackluster.

Overall, great work on this, I enjoyed it :)

@the-neon-shark Thanks for playing :blush:

1. The currently selected unit has a slightly different color. it's barely noticable, but there. Ran out of time to actually balance it properly.
2. you can select using either [Tab] (in order of purchase, Shift + Tab for reverse) or [1-0]. "Control groups" (Ctrl + # to set, # to select)
3. ran out of time to do the animations :frowning:

Pretty great!!! Played it for awhile, interesting tactics. Saving up for the palace guard is a no brainer! The use of blockades was the best part. I tried out the other modes, they're good for a laugh hahaha. Overall, great work!

Really enjoyed this game! Impressive RTS for such a short time frame! The protester's audio quickly gets out of hand with them overlayed each other but I found it kinda funny even though I ended up lower the volume. Overal really enjoyed this submission!

Love it, one of the ideas i wanted to make was a real time strategy game and this is probably one of the best executions possible for a LDjam, very good work on the gameplay loop i quite enjoyed thinking about where to place units and using barricades to funnel protestors into my police troops, and the fact it gets unmanageable very quickly is a plus very thematic, i would love to see this sort of thing expanded as it was quite addictive

Unique take on the theme! I bet if you had more time you totally could make this some super epic strategic tower defense game! It would be nice if you had some sort of algorithm that would target groups of people, instead of you having to attack them by hand, however it added a sense of urgency having to control them all. I enjoyed your concept and the gameplay was really fun!
Well Done!

Overall a fun game! I made it just over 400 seconds. I found it kind of hard to save up and actually get anyone other than police, but I think I was too proactive in taking down rebels as soon as they appeared instead of preparing for the future. I was able to get a unit on the edge of the capitol once where it was fighting but still healing faster than it was being damaged, which I enjoyed but might not be intended behavior. I found the audio a bit overwhelming with overlapping voice clips, but I like the idea of it. I also didn't realize where the military base was for ages, so I think it should be a bit more obvious.
