Berserk is a top down 2d retro style pixel game that is based on the theme: "Delay the inevitable". In this game the player is doomed to die unless the level is cleared from enemies and destructable objects, meaning you can also win. AND the game has a custom map editor which supports export and import of your own custom made maps. Make maps, export, challenge your friends!

The game have stats such as Damage, Speed and Dexterity that all makes the game easier to play and might benefit you when playing your friends custom map!

A few developer notes here: The game's development will be picked up and posted on my personal discord for all my projects: https://discord.gg/RudSfxZ. Feel free to come hang out with everyone else! :)

As I joined the compo late some of the features have been disabled such as upgrading your stats. However it is my hope that people will find the map editor cool!

On that note; I was very pressured on time since I joined about 12 hours into the compo challenge so I hope it can be played despite the performance issues that comes with larger maps and the lack of health regeneration.

Have a good day!

NOTE: The title screen does say "Sound effects by Oryx Design Lab" which should not be there as the game has no sound effects due to the rules of the Compo Challenge. Thank you!

My man joins 12 hours late and still implements a full level editor, what an absolute madman. Too bad the sound effects got cut, the game could really use some hit feedback, maybe some knockback too. Combat in general feels a little stale, though I'm sure the stat upgrade system would help. That being said, this already seems like a great base to build up from, great job

Looks amazing but I will say its very frustrating to get a hit off. It feels like there's a single frame for contact to happen which is confusing with the slow animation of the swing. I would expect it to make contact during the entire animation. Game has a lot of potential

This game contains a level editor, quite impressive (esp considering starting late). The hitbox on the sword is a bit strange, but good work!

The arts are very reminiscent of the Oryx Design Lab, but they are totally original and with a special touch of style, I loved it! Apart from the fact that it has a level editor, and the difficulty is well balanced.

The setting and effects were great too, congratulations!

There is a lot of potential here, especially with the level editor, I'm definitely sure it took a lot of effort in making a level editor in your game, and it shows. However, based on the gameplay it can be at some times frustrating, especially when your aim is tied with your movement. Plenty of top down shooter like games, especially with melee (hotline miami is a great example) differentiate movement with aim, since both is a different focus for the player when they play in that game. For instance, lets say you want to dodge an enemy and also aim your weapon and hit them at the same time, this is really impossible to do, and somewhat frustrating to the player because they lose a bit control. Then if you want to dodge the enemy and hit them at the same time, you would have to constantly poke them and retreat in that order, repeated. Personally, I think this also may impact the player's feedback in wanting to dodge, and maybe just running at the enemy hitting them as much as possible. If you intend your gameplay to be that way, for sure I think it works perfectly, just take my feedback as a grain of salt. Very excellent job! Can't believe you made a level editor!!

The game needs a lot of polish, like some sort of indication when you hit the enemy, improving the fighting system. The fact that this game has a level editor is very impressive but I think you should've just stuck to making the core gameplay loop feel as good as possible. Anyways good job

I like the style
And you have even made a tutorial zone wow
Your game needs sound and enemies should have some attack that you actually can see
And enemies like barrels are not enemies xd
Btw good job, compo is challenging)

I enjoyed the graphics, but I felt like the combat could have benefited from more polish

Sword hitting things was kind of random I found. Sometimes hits wouldn't register properly and I had to swing twice. Though I did think it looks pretty nice. Also sad that there are no sounds. Oh well such is the way with a game jam.

Collisions are little bit tricky, but I love the pixel art. And congrats on the level editor!
Good job!

A promising game with lovely & beautiful art! It lacks a lot, though, the main thing being some attack juice or at least feedback: the player doesn't know when he's hit, when he hits the enemy, etc. Adding some basic effects (like changing sprite colors after being hit) and sounds would already improve that a lot.

I absolutely love that you have a map editor, the art is fantastic and puts you perfectly in the right mood to crawl through some dungeons, definitely a game to recommend and a bonus if you have someone to play with and take turns to create maps. Great job with making an all-around fabulous entry!

It has potential but it needs some work, I think. Having attacks tied to movement just feels clunky and I'm missing the feedback that my attacks actually do something, especially when enemies are on top of you, magically draining HP. If that can be improved then you've got a pretty solid foundation!

I laughed when I realize the table counted as an enemy, like others have said the sword attack needs to be more responsive, I just spammed attack constantly.

@digitaldude555 I think that when the tables were added it was during a time where time was of the essence and they were thrown in as Enemies for some reason. A really fun test I had was when I entered one of the levels and suddenly had a bunch of tables and chairs chasing me. So I guess they would just be possessed if the game had lore. Thanks for playing btw, the game will now enter actual rating which I did not expect!

It takes way too long to respond to each individual message but all of you who rated the game this far, thank you very much. It is always a lot of fun to do these game jams with you all, and I hope your games went as you had hoped too!

Love a good fantasy dungeon crawler. Nice pixel art. Would have loved to see your hand at more class design! They need to update some new categories to be for storytelling - feel user created ones here could be really great. Nice jam, good luck in the results - rootin' for ya!
