XORN by Harrison Dunn

Entry for the Extra

Control a friendly xorn as you navigate your earthen home eating gems to survive!

Controls - WASD - movement

Collect gems before (inevitably?) getting defeated by greedy adventurers! Each gems fills a different stomach and each stomach grants special traits. When an adventurer catches you, you lose the contents of your stomach. If they catch you while you're starving, it's game over! There's also lava! Touching it will make you empty all your stomachs (even red!) and if you touch it while starving, it's also game over!

Blue gems - faster move speed
Green gems - gem sight
Red gems - Can take multiple hits first

Known Issues
- ~~Xorn will sometimes run in a direction upon startup and be unable to take input controls. Having difficulty reproducing. Might be a webGL thing.~~ Resolved in update v0.06.1
- Gems will sometimes pop-in or not glow correctly while green stomach has contents

I know it's still early on but I just wanted to say I love the art so far! The gems are big and chunky and the effect when you break a block is clean! Also the style of the background is really cool, almost like a painting! Keep it up!

The graphics are beautiful, but the character needs to be animated, but I didn’t understand the essence of the game.

Thanks for checking out the early prototype @nate954 & @oneowerse! I plan to animate the character, but it took a backseat to getting everything else up and running. When I made it, I wasn't completely sold on the concept yet.

And I don't blame you for not getting the game - there isn't much of one yet :)

I like the old-school name of the game. Almost like Tron but more dark and alien :alien: :blue_heart:

I'll be happy to check this out again when there's a solid objective to this game, but for now I can't see how it matches the theme or provides any challenges. I'll be checking this out after the prototype though, if that gets fleshed out.

I had a bug which made the character go always to the right T-T

@magicbarbu Does it happen every time you start the game? I haven't been able to repro this issue.

@harrison-dunn I have retried twice and it's the same result (I clicked twice on the right close to a green gems each time)

I love the dig-dug style games, and this one already makes one innovation I haven't seen before: a quick sparkle to hint at a gem in the area. I love that it feels endless. Great work so far, excited to see where it goes.

Seems like this game has potential, maybe you could spend the juice you get for the different gems on different abilities that help you get gems to make a risk-reward type of thing

The graphics seems to be interesting, the map is Wang tile and looks nature.
Three kind of food seems to have some potentials...
I guess add some growthment(for example, some block become harder and you become more powerful when you eat) and sense of purpose(for example, change the map to vertical and you should dig deeper) will make it better.

I like the graphics a lot! However, the red versions of the xorn guy weren't really a threat. Also my guy went on an immortal death march in one direction, he's going twice as fast as normal and he won't stop.

@rollyrollin thanks for checking it out! Yeah, it's untuned as of yet. I intend to playtest with significantly more and faster enemies.

That infinite direction bug is still there, eh? I'm not sure what's causing it. I'll try some new things. Thanks :)

Love the gems art style and lighting effects. Pretty fun to play. The bug with infinite direction is still there :/ Anyway, cool game.

The game concept and design were great. I really like the uses of the different gems and how much each type is scattered across the world. Great job! I encountered a bug that caused everyone to only move up, and that forced me to stop. I had fun otherwise though!

Really solid foundation you made there and curious to see the final game. Also great to see you on stream again today! Here's the link if you want to rewatch it: https://youtu.be/LUs4mltqVVw
