Poseidon's Revenge by Liam

PoseidonCoverImage.png

Your islands have angered the god Poseidon. He will now flood them until they are no more. Delay the inevitable with your warriors until the goddess Athena grants you safe passage and escape from your doomed home.

Click to select a warrior and then click again to move to somewhere on each island. You lose if all your warriors drown or the temple itself is flooded. Delay the inevitable flooding each level until the temple has prayed enougth to Athena. Conveniently these temples have a progress bar inside. Poseidon sends beasts of the sea to flood island tiles and also summons springs to flood the island himself. Your warriors will shoot arrows at the beasts automatically if they are in range.

Originally built for the Compo, I had a game at the end of the 48 hrs but I wasn't very happy with it so I took a little time to improve the graphics and try to polish a few bits for entry into the Jam  Think I got most of the major bugs...

Fixes

There was a bug with the pathfinding for your warriors. This has been fixed now in a hacky way but seems OK.

This is really quite good, one thing that really spoiled it for me though was not being able to move to the tile you click and only the one nearest it. It felt like this may be a bug?

Good idea! Controls were intuitive. However I felt like the game was too easy and I didn't have to do much in terms of controlling my guys. Also the music was a bit hard to listen to because of the bass. Would be nice if there were sound effects for when your warrior shoot arrows and kill a beast, and lastly the game froze when I pressed play on firefox so I had to play on chrome just for your information.

@indigowolf @kazuren thanks for playing! Definitely a bug, dammit. I'll have an investigate about the freezing bug, if anyone encounters it I'd love to know if anything useful was in the console. Very much agree with all your points @kazuren

@kazuren It does thanks, I did mainly use FF whilst building this but the level data is stored as an image and maybe the value for the temple pixel is getting borked

Interesting use of the grid system, I wasn't sure what I was meant to being doing so i avoided the creatures then the game ended, gg.

I think the first level was the hardest of the ones I played, but possibly thats partly because I hadn't worked out the strategy of anything yet? I just had a really hard time keeping on top of everything for long enough for the meter to fill, and it didn't feel like there was a lot I could do with only one warrior. Honestly, I think that level is almost not needed, and the game could start with the second level which I found much easier and helped me get to grips with the concepts a lot more. Your pacing is overall quite slow so maybe cutting out a couple of levels could help? I really started to appreciate the tactics of this game when my warriors couldn't access everything, the first level where this started to click for me was the one with the 3 islands and I had to use the outer islands as sacrificial shields to reduce the flow as much as I could. I think my biggest problem was I couldn't figure out a way to counter the floods that happened sometimes, and they'd just screw me over which wasn't fun. I liked the art a lot, I found it clear and readable, and it looked good. The music loop did start to get annoying eventually, but that's hard to avoid in LD. The gameplay concept is interesting with a tower defense with limited mobile towers - I'd like to see more iteration on this idea. I think there is some cool potential here. Thanks for the game!

I like the twist on tower defense! I think there are a lot of cool things you could do with this game.

@aevek Thanks for playing and I really appreciate the time you've taken for some detailed feedback. If I'd had more time then the warriors would have been able to shore up flooded tiles and return them to land (for a short while anyway), making the flood attack more manageable and adding more strategy. So the first level would have been useful to learn that but I think maybe two warriors then would have been better. Agree with pretty much everything you say! Thanks!
