Word Wizard by Slecornu

[raw]
made by Slecornu for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

WARNING: Not compatible with Windows 7, Home and 11.

The wizard Acrolectus, vain old bastard that he is, has been secretly working on a forbidden spell to try and stop his precious silver hair from thinning.

One problem… the fool has got his words mixed up - rather than prolonging his youth he’s brought forwards his own demise! Now Death himself has ripped open a portal to come and claim him.

Type the words to cast the spells and destroy the enemies. If he can put the spell right, maybe he can cling to his life (and hair) just a little bit longer.

I cannot seem to be able to run this from Windows 7, but the art style is so expressive! Love it and the idea of a typing game

Had a lot of fun playing this one! Lost to the word mystery, it is hard for me to type that :P

I like the game! a little sad that you dont differ from small and capital letters and sometimes, if you type a word that is not in front, it can be covered behind a sprite :)

But its a really fun typing game! Maybe it should punish you for typing wrong but i like the chaos :D

The sprites are amazing especially the wizard! The dictionary selection is a great idea and makes the game so much more fun.

Very cool concept! Thanks for your entry

The art is fantastic, and I love how the music ramps up. Excellent sound effects, too. Only thing I ran into that confused me was target selection, but once I got the hang of it, I enjoyed beating back the minions and spamming my keys to combo through them. Wonderful game!

Great game! I like the idea of speed typing game! Cool arts!
Maybe the grass looks like I'm wearing 3d glasses :). Also, when word is long and enemy is very near to me I don't see it completely.
Keep up the good work! ![typing.png](///raw/f6a/2/z/4da70.png)

Cool! Art is flawless, voiceover is lots of fun, and sound in general is just spot on. The only problem was to understand what to type with seven different words on the screen.
Ran it on Windows 8, everything worked perfectly.

Great game! I couldn't rate the graphics because everything is pretty broken on my Mac - it all looks yellow (which also made it very difficult to play). But I could still mostly play and I could tell that this is very good quality. I didn't like that I wasn't allowed to type any word I could see – especially with my derped up graphics it could make it very difficult to know which word to type.

I really like the art style of the wizard and the enemies, the linework really makes them stand out against the playdough looking 3d trees. good entry

"vain old bastard that he is" xD
Too good in every way! Graphics, Sound, Gameplay... It's addictive. The only weak point (because I'm French) is that I have to play with the English keyboard (qwerty) and so it's an additional gymnastics (especially for the "M" which is not at all in the same place xD)... I still managed to do 1036! (in Defautl/Fast, so the whole "normal" game I guess).
If you make an update with the possibility to switch to AZERTY keyboard, please keep me informed ;)

I really, really loved this. I wasn't expecting to have so much fun with a typing game, nor for it to look so polished an professional. 1000x better than the typing games I played as a child. Wonderful sense of humour too!

Wow, really polished entry! The art was great, and you included a lot of extras in the game settings.

I really liked the mechanic that makes the urgent words closer in the foreground. However, it got a little confusing with so many words on the screen near the end. I think this was due to the monsters staggering their horizontal position in a zig-zag pattern as they moved. Maybe organizing them in a more linear fashion would help?

Some of the things that I loved most about your entry:
- The wizard changing poses with each letter types. It added a ton of character!
- The "MASH!" mechanic was clever, and a lot of fun to use!
- The goofy voice acting ;)

I think this has potential! I had more fun with it than a lot of the typing games out there.

Great work!

Okay dude, i was really really surprise to see how u managed to do a fun game with just a wording system.

Btw the letter M bro ? I'm french and cannot use this letter so i cannot be the first at the game if u do not upload a fixed version. Great Job.

I almost quit the game before i launched it, cause dude, the start button? Don't put him alone away from the screen, he really feels alone and sad, don't do that to him.

I really liked this game, the graphics are great, the variety of enemies made it very fun, it's also nice to have different themes for the words, and it's also nice to have longer and harder words as the game progresses.
If there were a special sound that sounded when an error in typing it would be even better, if there was such thing I'm sorry I didn't notice it.
Really good game overall, thank you (:

Weird bug: When starting the game on windows i got this message:
> > Your video card does not support any of the supported Vulkan or OpenGL versions. Please update your drivers or if you have a very old or integrated GPU upgrade it.

Which is fine I guess, but when I closed the message... The game music started. I'm currently writing this message with the game music in my ears, since I can't stop it in any known way other than mute the pc sound. Gotta restart my computer now.
(The music is nice, anyway 😊)

A very well polished game, and a good amount of fun. I really enjoyed the animations. The only issue I had was that it took me a bit to figure out HOW to type to kill monsters, as I tried to start every letter with a capital, which it seems like the game didn't register.

This is a very nice, polished product. I enjoyed playing it a lot. The visuals and gameplay are really appealing.
Sometimes, however, it is hard to tell which word you are typing for, and you end up typing for the wrong word and dying. Maybe add a key to cancel the spell you are casting?
Overall, really fun and charming game! I had a great time with it.

That's quite fun ! Playing with different dictionaries is a nice touch, and the pauses of the wizard are hilarious. Difficulty hits you a little bit too suddenly (in all the runs I made, once I lost 1 life I lost the other two right away). Also I had a bit of trouble locating the start button the first time

I had a lot of fun with the game! What I found to be confusing is keeping track of which word is first in the queue of enemies once more than 3 start appearing on the screen, so it would be nice if you made it more clear, like highlight the text or something. Other than that really polished game with fun dictionary changes and adjustable difficulty!

I enjoyed this. It brought back memories of Mario Treaches Typing. I like your artstyle. Wish it was more depth to the gameplay similar to the old Mario. I hope if you expand on it you would utilize the environment making it more of an adventure then a fighting style game.

I got to 1164 :D This was a lot of fun! Especially when it gets difficult near the end. It is really stressfull, but very fun. You really did a great job with the gamefeel, with the flashy combo meter and nice sound effects when you type. It feels really satisfying when you manage to nail a few words in quick succession, and the game rewards that to make it feel even better. The amount of polish was also great, although the game was a bit stuttery for me at the beginning (not during the gameplay luckily, which is the important part).

Great submission! Very well done! This was really a joy to play :D
