Night of Treats by Nefylem

[raw]
made by Nefylem for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Run around town collecting Treats from houses with their light on. The more treats you carry, the slower you move, and the more you attract the monsters waiting in the dark to feed on your precious, precious treats.

screenshot_title.png

Walking over uneven ground with a full load will cause you to drop treats, and the monsters try to push you around to knock loose your precious cargo. Defeat the monsters by shining your torch on their weak knees to knock them over. Notice an unstable type thing in the background here anyone?

screenshot_6.png Get them back to the cauldron in the graveyard to add to your haul for the night, and gain upgrades!

Change Log

Modified the camera system so there should be much less snapping, and hopefully less glitching.

Fixed the monsters, stop them walking in place and floating

Rebalanced the dropping of treats, and stop it happening on the way up the hill to the cauldron

Run system - added a mention of it on the key list, and tweaked it to be a bit more obvious that it's working

Great concept. It could be pretty fun if it weren't quite as buggy. I kept getting monsters stuck hovering in the air and walking in place, and I could never get the flashlight aimed on their knees long enough to do anything, and the camera went crazy in a lot of places. Fix those, and maybe add a few more monsters so the slow parts aren't so slow, and this could be an awesome game.

The environment was whimsical, and of course I enjoy the Halloween theme.

:) Cool game! I like the concept. The art was good, and it was all put together very well! Fun to play!

The player is up a little too high--feet float off the ground.

Very cool theme! Loved the music. The dudes eating the candy were pretty great.

@tykenn yeah there's still plenty of bugs left in it, was a bit of a race and was honestly not sure if I would submit it or not. the idea is you can't kill the monsters until you have some upgrades. level up a few times (torch power and battery strength especially) and they get a lot easier to defeat. although they do resurrect themselves after a minute

As tykenn said, it has potential but there are quite a few bugs. Overall great job though, I really liked the feel of the game (and the Alien-like baddy).

Very well made! Yes the camera was glitching all over the place and monsters get stuck sometimes but still, the music and the graphics are very good and the mood fits perfectly. Very good entry. Keep it up.

Very cool entry! love the spooky theme c:
I liked the decision to go back and forth between a base which was the cauldron and the doors to trick or treat that were further away everytime, and made me really feel the extra weight of the candy. The monsters are also cool but they seem to need to take a LOT of light on the knees to just be stunned for a little while, also some monsters just went flying for no reason sometimes. The upgrade nature of the torch was also very fun, felt myself getting stronger everytime! the "lose candy" bit felt somewhat arbitrary though, i would just lose candy and not even notice cause i didn't think the terrain was uneven or i was hit. i think if candy was a bit harder to obtain, and you couldn't lose candy would be a bit better, also if the monsters had different weak spots and died permanently in this setting with the flashlight combat mechanic would be a great roguelike! Also loved the flashlight itself, reminded me of Alan Wake but with the focus only on the flashlight and the upgrades it worked really well here. The lowpoly artstyle was quite endearing, really cute, just think the weak spots on the monsters knees could also be a bit more polygonal and not just a sphere. Anyway, great entry, i had a lot of fun playing this!

I super enjoyed this game. I was about to shoutout the artist for the soundtrack but it was AI!!! Thats crazy cool! If I had one constructive criticism it would be the camera movement was buggy. Well done!

Love the halloween aesthetic. I could not figure out how to deliver 40 candies because I could not walk up the slope without losing half my candy. The enemies are also very scary, that's awesome.

Really cute spoopy game :D I really like the idea of pointing your flashlight at the enemies weekspots, similar to Alan Wake. However, the camera was a little wierd at times and I think the player could've been a little faster or had a dash or something. But honestly it's still a great game, well done!

Awesome entry! I loved the level design and art. The animations on the monsters were really good! I think the level could have used less ambient lighting so you really feel the darkness, a it was, I could see pretty far ahead of me, which took away from the atmosphere a bit.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. I've done some bug fixing, not perfect but hopefully an improvement. I've tried to everything said into account, hopefully the game coming out of this will be better. I've left an original copy for download, and put up a change log detailing what I've done and why. It's long and rambling, but I'd rather be transparent and honest about the work

I like the mood of the game, but sometimes shadows were too sharp and it made it hard to see. About the music, imho it would have been better just one song in a loop, but i get it can get repetitive. Mouse sensivility was too high for me i think, and the camera sometimes was hard to control. I liked the ambient and the theme, animations, low ppoly enemies. Its really nice. Would have been nice to see that boss battle! Contratulations!

Nice art style! The camera was throwing me off but it was a solid game mechanic that could be fun with more time/polish.

Very ambitious but cool concept. It was fun to explore the town, tho I wish it was possible to control the camera's y-axis.

Pretty cool. It's an interesting concept and kinda scary at times. The camera could do with a bit of tweaking but other than that it's a really cool little world you made, there's an interesting aesthetic, some of the animations look awesome and it's pretty funny you have to shoot the monsters in the knees and then they limp.

I like the graphics and monsters, but the gameplay is a bit monotonous and the camera behaves strangely, I'm sure there just wasn't enough time to finish everything, anyway, good job!

Loved the graphics and the concept. Had some struggles with the camera and monsters flying after a while. But the core game loop is great and I enjoyed your game.
