(You are the) monster gaiden by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou

A weird idea I had for a monster raising sim in the style of Project J Wonder and Princess Maker, trying not to be kileld by the humans. It was completely thrown off track by my love for "Monster Loves You" that I recently played obsessively, and that's a good thing.

So I guess, if someone with funds and/or a clear idea of where to take this wants to give it a go, let me know.

As it is, it's just an engine. Again. I'm not sorry! I learnt a lot of things, and I tried for a soft and sensitive presentation <3

CONTROLS
********
Cursor keys: move
[A]: jump and take context sensitive actions
[S]: roar
[ESC]: check your stats.

Walkthrough:

go play with your toys on the left of your cave, and then go scare some chickens, and talk to the townspeople. The end

Photoshop CS5, Construct 2 and Fruity Loops + Roland Hypersonic for the music and sfx

Hard to beat the art. Gameplay... well it's a bit on the lean side. Delightful entry though.

It's a real shame it's unfinished. The art is amazing, and it seemed like it could have been a potential winner. Amazing job though! I love what you have :)

Such a cute monster, loved his little snoozing animation. Would love to see a complete game like this.

It looks like a fantastic place to start building a monster sim from! The selector hand was a bit hard to see in the left-most toy-area dialog. It also seemed like the dialog was below some other UI elements, which made it partly shadowed in one case. Other than that, very cute animations, a nice fitting tune and something that deserves further development! If nothing else, if you make it public, you could always use it as a starting point for the next ludum...

This is so cute!! Graphics and animations are amazing!!
The song is really fitting to the game's atmosphere!

It's really a pity that you couldn't get the game itself developed further... =/

This game is gorgeous! I loved "Monster Loves you!" as well, and I hope you finish this game at some point because it could really do well as a monster sim! My favorite part was scaring the chickens. :D

For a sort of a prototype, this shows a lot of potential. The graphics and animations make it look like a game already. Would just need to add some deeper mechanics into it and it'd be a pretty fine game.

I know where you are coming from with writing an engine, I spent a few hours writing a level editor before deciding to just create lots of separate objects!

Really fun idea which is well executed, as always the art is cute, colourful and awesome.

Sometimes jams are just about experimenting and not making a game as such.

Great effort, has lots of potential if you decide to work on it more.

The graphics and music were extremely charming. So was the game as a whole. The gameplay was pretty much non-existant but it is the most well made fluffy monster sim with pointless stats out there so 10/10.

This is adorable, and the graphics are fantastic! The animation might be my favorite part of this. What a nice visual style. Love the interaction. And the humor was great (especially that last option with the jam reference!).

Cute graphics! A bit empty of gameplay but I see this wasn't your point for this entry. Overall this could be interesting if is extended to an actual game.

Most adorable game I've played this LD! Art and animations were great. All you'd need to expand on this is a few more activities and some incentive/reward tied to the stats. Looks far more polished than your average LD game.

In response to those villagers complaining about your game: There's a lot of ways people have fun. You don't need crunchy gameplay or long-running content to bring players some joy. I always appreciate the aesthetics behind your games, and the music, colors, and character design were delightful.

I don't know how attached you are to solo entries, but if you wanted to do more than you had time for, you could trawl for some like-minded folks to collab with. Many hands make light work, and it might help you more-fully realize your inspiration. If you prefer to keep flying solo, you could try to structure your time or pare things down, or even build a flexible generic framework or code-base for the games you like to make ahead of time (it's in the Jam rules), with the knowledge that you're going to want to put energy into making things all stylish and charming during the competition.

Most of all, I hope you had fun making this. It certainly made me smile! Thank you for putting this together, and for sharing it.

Nice art but the game managed to feel empty. It needs a goal. Kill people or make friend or something.

The graphics are very charming.
You've done the hard engine-building part... it just needs like 4 encounters or so and a couple endings based on the monster's stats. And maybe some legs on the jumping sprite. So close. Alas.

As a proof of concept it certainly looks promising. Gameplay-wise...not so much, as you said yourself.

Still, you've done an awesome job. Good luck with it! :D
