Critical Error by JayJack

[raw]
made by JayJack for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

You play as Keeko the purple computer virus and infiltrate the system, making it so unstable that it crashes! Overwrite file systems (purple blocks) to respawn from them if you accidentally get deleted!

There are so many things I wanted to do with this game jam but I only had a few hours to work on it. Here is a better idea of the concept with all the stuff I haven't had a chance to implement:

  • Any kind of jumping at all
  • (Specifically a spring jump toward a cursor the player can aim in any direction)
  • Make the computer more progressively unstable as you overwrite the system
  • Unlock more powerful hacking abilities in Metroidvania style gameplay
  • Way better art, music, effects, and sound effects
  • More computer-like aesthetic
  • Commentary on bottom of screen as console commands
  • Fight pompous Antivirus bosses with hilarious corporate satire
  • Travel to other computers using the internet as a hub
  • Uncover scandalous secrets hidden in top secret mainframes

Congratulations on the first jam submission!
Hopefully you pursue this post-jam and add all the features you talk about.
I can see it being a really solid game once you expand on the foundations you have here,
Nice work.

Really cute concept!
Also loooove the soundtrack!! Give me huge mega-man vibes haha.
The ending part was really difficult, but I managed to get it!!! Well done :)

Well that was quick fun :D
Nice minimalistic graphics and nice song at least for that short time.
Gameplay was evasive platformer without jumps, not very special that way.
I liked the overall retro mood and the game looked and sounded polished.

This works really well as a platformer where you can't jump.
It's a bit short, but overall very enjoyable.

Cool little game, made it to the end! I think the lack of jumping actually makes it more unique. I noticed that Keeko's acceleration when holding a direction key is pretty drastic, but controls felt good to me.
One suggestion: don't have the checkpoints in the line of fire. In one of them, I was getting hit by a bullet immediately on respawn.

Nice game, good entry :)
I like the retro style, it reminds me megaman with visuals and universe. I really appreciate the effort with sound design and music that make your game more immersive! Maybe some situations in level design are too hard but it's a jam, so it's hard to have a balanced result quickly. Also more different type of challenges to surprise players would be great but it's a great job!

I loved the main characters design. Animations are good, especially death animation. Wish it was longer. Overall, NES like, good and quick adventure. Nice job dude!

Sound and Art are very good, the gameplay is smooth and I can see that you did your best in the time you had, which made the game look very polished, the theme on the other hand I believe it was only in the text, probably due to the lack of the mentioned time. in general I really liked the game

I see a lot of potential here. The visuals and the audio are really good, and with a little more time this could have been flesh outed into a full feeling game. Nice work!

Cute game! It's polished and playable enough, but very short. Love the music. It would be great just having a bigger level. Connection to the theme is unclear.

It's a short game and few more levels would be nice, but overall a nice entry, the graphics are lovely, music as well and the overall idea is very cool. Good job.

Nice animations and cute aesthetic. It felt a bit weird without a jump button, but you made it work! I like the unique take on the unstable theme, good job!

For a fisrt solo jam game made in a few hours it's a good entry :) Obviously it lacks some things, as you listed in the description, but it works, there is something to do and it's complete. And the music slaps. No jumping mechanic can be a good thing if you create levels around it, and you did a decent job for such limited amount of time. At first it wasn't clear to me what the controls are, some instructions would be nice. Overall, it's not great, but it's not that bad either, good job :) Also, you can make a post-jam game with the ideas you've listed in the description realized.
