We're Going Nuclear! by Ryan Winstead

[raw]
made by Ryan Winstead for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Congratulations on your new job as nuclear controls engineer! You start tonight on the skeleton crew.

It's your job to keep the nuclear power plant up and running. Unfortunately, this plant has a .... reputation for being unstable. Critical systems break, hackers takeover the mainframe, temperature spikes. The works.

Can you keep the electricity flowing while avoiding a nuclear meltdown? Can you even manage to survive the night? Find out in We're Going Nuclear!

Developer Notes:

  • Fullscreen is recommended since terminal text can appear small on some screens.

  • This game dramatizes the instability of nuclear power plants for gameplay purposes. However, we believe that nuclear energy is safe and effective and is an important part of a diverse energy system!

Nailed it on the theme. Either I suck or it's quite hard though. Really well made for a Jam game, nice polished feel.

I only played one round of it, but I can tell, it's great! I'm surprised this was done in 3 days!

WOW!!! This is an AWESOME game!!
The depth to it and the atmosphere is fantastic - i could play this for quite a while.
I love the humor too :D

Perhaps i'm just bad at it, but the game was quite difficult. A lot of problems crept up very fast, and it seems to have a bit of a learning curve... at least, it was difficult to deal with everything as soon as there were problems.
Is there a victory point, or is it just go until i eventually lose?

There are a couple of areas to juice things up - like when i am dragging things it'd be nice if it auto-snapped to where it should be. When the game is about balancing a ton of thigns at once, i don't want to be sitting there precisely trying to get a vial into an area.
Same thing with the typing game - it took so long to type i felt like i had to stop playing the fun part of the game just to not lose the game... I do like the mini games, i think they could just be a little kinder.

All the same, this was really fun. Really really fantastic tutorial, and very good game play.
Well done :)

Great theme! It's hard to understand what's going as everything is coming up too fast. But overall it's good!

Okay, the theme was really spot-on. Congrats !
It was a little bit tedious to navigate to each rooms with the endless corridors, my head rolled quite a few times with a bloackout.

I really like the jokes and was amazed that the logins change in every game. Really nice entry !

Really great little puzzle game. The only thing I would say would make it better is more audio feedback, but overall this is amazing. Bonus points from me as we both interpreted the "Unstable" theme as a nuclear reactor blowing up.

Great atmosphere and mood in the game, it felt very polished. I found it a bit too difficult though, I had the power lever at max and still lost to long periods of outages.

I enjoyed the game really much, though I have the reflexes of a potato. I would recommend changing the note in the
description, to that fullscreen is "needed" rather than "recommended", because at least in my case, the keyboard input worked only in fullscreen.

I like how creative your game is. The music is great for this type of game and adds a lot of tension to the atmosphere, but at the same time it's not too distracting. And I think implementing mini games to fix various things in other rooms was a really nice touch and it contributes to the unstable theme.

One thing that I would change is making the character sprite move a bit faster between the rooms (the red circle that travels). Not too fast, because a bit of a break helps, but maybe a tiny bit faster. After all, there is a potential nuclear explosion looming over the power plant :)

This is a really interesting concept! The way you have to balance all the different tasks is genius!

If you went with a art style like Papers Please and set this game in a soviet era country, it would be even better!

Very nicely done!

I felt like Homer Simpson playing this game xD. The little mini games to deal with the plant problems is really cool. I think the little guy could maybe walk just a little faster ? Good work tho and good luck!
