Elbatsnu's Brewery by Feraligatr

[raw]
made by Feraligatr for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

Summary

You are Elbatsnu, an abandoned alchemist who was attending an apprenticeship. Due to horrible performance, Elbatsnu was kicked out of the Alchemists Circle and now has to get along on his own.

Control

You have a cauldron. The cauldron has an instability level. Every level has its own deck and shop. Draw cards, play them, gain money, spend money in the shop to extend your deck. Complete the quests. Repeat.

I really enjoyed the game! A very nice ideia, i only think it would be nice to put some sort of emphasis on how much chances or time you have left, since they are on the bottom of the quests

My cauldron blew up. I think there's a reason my apprenticeship ended early. . .

Cool concept, I like the game loop a lot. It's got a lot of mechanics and they work well together. I also really liked the music, it was easy to listen to and added some mood to the game. I also feel like you've really captured the theme of instability well. Even though it's just a bar going up, I really feel the tension of trying to make my potions reach the quest requirements.

I like the combination of deckbuilding elements and puzzle elements! Good job!

A deckbuilder seems like a pretty ambitous choice for a jam game, but I'd say this succeeds - your instructions could be a bit clearer though, took a while to actually figure out what I was supposed to be doing.

Surprisingly addictive. What an unstable brewery! I didn't complete the final quests because I only then realized too much fire = bad :D Wonderful music, funny quest names, and great gameplay. The only thing i'd suggest is explaining how the deck and hand work more thoroughly.

Pretty fun to play for a short game. Game sounds are nice. It was easy to understand how everything works. The ending is one of despair followed by depression through, like a Dota game. Would have been nice to get an other at least. What an unstable brewery! through.

I really liked the concept here! The execution is solid, too! I couldn't get past level 3 even though I thought I completed all the quests, not sure what happened there. Overall a solid deckbuilder, great job!

I had doubts at first, but after a couple of tries I really got into it ! It fits perfectly the theme, the art and music are good... What an unstable brewery! Congratulations !

Fun game, was a bit confused about how the cards and hand worked at first, but got it sorted out. Nice work building a card game in a jam, the art and effects are good, and the music is really good for the mood of the game. Great work!

Nice Rng puzzle game. Non-intrusive music, quite a variety of cards makes first playthrough enjoyable to finish.
Would be nice to get shop options that remove existing cards (maybe with limited amount of them).
Finished lvl 8 in 10 potions, though pretty sure it's possible even faster.
got 60% in ~8 tries :) ![Elbatsnu.png](///raw/2d4/b1/z/47e16.png)

i went through phases of thinking i understood the mechanics, realizing i didn't, thinking i did, and again, i didn't. got stuck at level three.

it wanted me to get 150 gold, but it would deplete my gold every time i made a new option, even if i didn't buy anything. was the intention that i had to make 150 gold in one option?

so, i got 150 gold on the next round, then was working on buying cards, but it blew up randomly! right before my fourth card! (probably there was some rule for why it blew up that i just forgot about). maybe from playing the same card too many times? got too frustrated at that point.

i think the concept is cool, but it felt like there were too many arbitrary rules / goals to keep track of.

An interesting take on the theme. The game seems heavily inspired by the board game Quacks of Quedlinburg, and I think you've done a good job of reimagining that game's push-your-luck mechanic. The game could have done with a slower, better tutorial, teaching better how you had so many potions per round, and had quests to complete in each round. Tweaks to the UI and I think this could be solved. A nice entry!

Could not get to the last level because RNG was angry with me, but really liked what I did play.
The music and sound effects were well chosen, the graphics are nice and the objectives are clear. Great entry!

Really entertaining! Those atomic pumpkins are probably the reason I got fired from my previous apprentice job...

Nicely put together. Graphics and audio felt solid.

Core loop was hard to understand from the instructions but straightforward once I played around a bit.

Nice work!
