Star Dash by ZaneDD

IMPORTANT: I did not have time to implement a tutorial page in game, so please read below for how to play!!!

"The perfect racing car crosses the finish line first and subsequently falls into its component parts" -Ferdinand Porsche

In Star Dash, hop into the cockpit of a starship designed for flying fast--and not much else. In fact, the engineering work is so shoddy that your ship won't even last the full race without repairing and refueling! In order to cross the finish line at all, much less in first place, you'll have to pick up supplies along the way!

Note that there is no menu system yet, so when you boot up the .exe you will load directly into the race countdown.

HOW TO PLAY:

Controls:

W - Throttle Up (increase speed, up to a maximum of 512) S - Brake (decrease speed) A/D - Turn left/right (relative to your ship!) R - Repair ship (decrease Instability by consuming 1 of each resource in your inventory)

Ship Status:

Fuel - When your fuel reaches 0, you lose! Pick up Fuel Rods (the shiny blue radioactive-looking rods) to restore 10 Fuel. Refueling happens instantly and automatically upon picking up a Fuel Rod. Fuel decreases whenever you use your thrusters (i.e. any of your WSAD keys). Vital note: once at full speed, you can coast to save Fuel!

Instability - When your Instability reaches 100, your ship explodes and you lose! In order to prevent this from happening, Repair your ship by picking up an item of each type (Gears, Wiring, Metal) and pressing R to heal 30 Instability.

PLANNED POST-JAM FEATURES:

  1. Menu structure/in-game tutorial
  2. Ship upgrades, unique stats by Ship/Parts
  3. Additional animations and improved "feedback elements" (i.e. indications of what is happening and why)
  4. Asteroid obstacles in the currently wide-open areas of the track
  5. Minimap
  6. Improved opponent AI
  7. Improved physics
  8. Weapons!
  9. Defenses (armor/shields/etc)

Interesting game, definitely fits the Jam's theme, and has some pretty good art as well. It could definitely be improved by letting the player turn faster when at lower speeds (better handling), and some reason to avoid hitting the walls (i.e. damage on collision). Better AI is obvious, but it sounds like that's on the plan anyway.

@hollyhay thanks! both of those things are included in my plans for "Improved Physics", so we'll see.

Very good adherance to the theme! I like the game but I feel the fuel lasted to short and I had a hard time seeing wich resource was which. Other than that, nice game! :)

Nice effort! There's a lot you could add here potentially! I'd recommend revisiting the character's turn rate - you could perhaps make the turn speed dependent on the speed, instead of making it quite slow all the time. That could help improving game feel.

Completed my race (on the 4th try) at 135.96. Fun game, with smooth controls and cute graphics. I had a little trouble understanding how the thrust worked, because I didn't realize there was a top speed I could hit, so I just ran out of fuel the first three games. On the one I won, one enemy ship blew up (good that they follow the same rules), and the other just got stuck on a wall, which seemed more like a glitch. Nice work - impressive for a short timeline.

You have Audio as a rating category, but I didn't hear any sound while playing.

It's interesting game with nice graphic. But the spaceship turns too slow for this track.

Fun little game. I liked it. I had issue with fuel, maybe you should tweak it a little bit. Some sound would have made it feel more finished. Even just for BG music.
Overall good entry!

It's so hard to handle, I kept running out of fuel because I missed it in the first area you can grab it, good concept though, definitely a good start!

Nice game, it is fun racing against AI which explodes later, too :) Overall, of course it lacks some details, as most jam games naturally do, but the game turns out to be fun, and, hopefully, all the post-jam ideas get implemented, too so that it gets to the full potential!

Short and sweet! I like when your ship runs out of fuel or breaks it all breaks into little pieces! The AI did seem to have trouble finishing the course. Cool idea!

Interesting game. I found the game camera a bit weird at the beginning but I managed to get used to it after a while. Good job and congrats! Nice to see Godot users around LD49!

Having an issue on Mac. It keeps telling me I don't have enough permission to play, is the App working?

THE RACE IS FINISHED! I think the ships have too much friction, maybe they should have more inertia in space. I like fragments of broken parts and that they stay until the end of the race+nice details of the animation on the ship. In the background there might be some huge wrecked space station with debris flying around. I like your post-jam features, good luck on this! :rocket:

Very fun game! It lacks sound design and the AI needs to be improved but the gameplay is pretty good, it was really pleasant to play ^^ Well done!
