Shipwreck! by astrochili

[raw]
made by astrochili for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

You are a shipwrecked pirate. It's time to collect the gold that fell off the ship! Use jumps to make the wreckage float in the direction you want, but be careful of the water currents.

I didn't finish the levels and sound in the original jam version, which is available for download separately. The actual version has sound and critical bugfixes.

Really nice visuals. Never heard of defold, I will have to check it out. When mixing 2d and 3d visuals, depth perception becomes an issue. I frequently lost track of the pirate when jumping(not having WASD made it even more annoying). Maybe a shadow underneath the pirates feet would help to show where on the scene you actually are.
There is a major bug in your game, or at least I think it's a bug. You can hold the jump key and simply jump across the water. You can basically ignore all of the puzzles of the game when you can hop across the water. Other than that, the visuals are great and the puzzle/platformer is really unique, great first jam game.

Wonderful graphics and fun gameplay. Lua is great to program with. The game you have finished is amazing for a first jam

@zachary-shah thanks for the review and the bug report! ☺️ I fixed this bug and another one that allowed you to fall through the pallet after a close transition/jump . I think that was important to make this hotfix.

@dobryn Thank you! Yes, Lua is really a good language to take a break from serious and working OOP.

Very nice! I think you added a very nice twist on basic movement mechanics that makes sense thematically. I would have loved to have had some sound effects though.

...although the constant BROING BROING BROING of a jump effect would probably be pretty annoying...

This is innovation! Very clever and challenging.

Nice entry. I struggled a little bit with reliance on some of the diagonal movement given wasd but the auto respawn mechanic is incredibly forgiving which made that nearly a non-issue.
Thanks for putting this together!

It was a bit frustrating trying to move the platforms, it wasn't really all that obvious what the best way to move them was. It seemed like the way to do it was to stand on the edge and jump, but doing so made you fall in the water. Maybe have the player move with the platform so they don't fall off all the time? Other than that, it was a fun game. I really liked the graphics.

Cool little game. The jumping felt satisfying and levels were short and compact which was nice. However there could be some kind of punishment for drowning maybe. After few deaths I didn´t care anymore doing the jumps accurately as I spawned immediately where I was before.

In the later levels I somehow managed to float away from the screen and the camera didn´t follow anymore making the game unplayable.

Gameplay was fun and the visuals are great! Sometimes I got stuck when moving in the wrong direction, maybe a button to redo the level would be helpful.

I like the game so much. Maybe add more items for environment diversity?

@mysticaldev Thanks! You can restart the level by pressing [R]

@spacecadet Definitely, the ability to sink and restore is a permissive because of imbalances in the current game.

@alex-chertilin I agree, I think that's what I will do in the future! Thank you!

@doomshmuck That was the idea, to fall down if you jump on the spot for a long time. Perhaps not the most successful :)

After getting drowned too many times:

Pros:

- Cool mix between 2D and 3D
- Very pleasant colour palette
- Nice use of simple shapes
- Quite clever physics
- Easy to grasp mechanics
- A bunch of levels is a plus

Cons:

- Wishing for any kind of sound / music
- It's a very thin line of getting a mix of dimensional graphics good. While it works sometimes here, sometimes you loose the perspective of where you kinda are. Perhaps a different graphic perspective could work?

A good entry, I had fun! Good job!

Oh, defold entry! I didn't use in this jam, but love it!

I love this relaxing music and nice mechanics.

Very cool concept! There should be a counter to see how many times you drowned, because after I realized how forgiving the respawn was, I wasn't even trying any other ways to get to my destination, just jump off my raft as many times as I needed to get where I wanted to go.

Very unique entry! Graphics look great, physics of floating "pice" are feeling fun. And gameplay of making your way through is solid! A couple of things I would change: 1) Character speed is too fast 2) You don't need slowly "floating" camera, it's more nauseating than giving something to gameplay!

The controls were a bit frustrating/fiddly. Still a really enjoyable game. Nice graphics and puzzles.

I liked this! failure was never that bad, since it just results in a tiny penalty, so its not frustrating. I really enjoyed it! I know the sound was edited in later, but it was excellent! The gameplay hook was novel, and it made sense very quickly. Nicely done!

Overall a fun and interesting little game. The controls could have been better, but it's okay for jam game.

Very innovative! I liked how some of the movements could only be done when the currents were right. Also the movements of the wreckage woods felt very natural. Keep up the good work!
