Bennet Froggy by Weirdybeardyman

[raw]
made by Weirdybeardyman for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

Inspired by "Getting Over it" with Bennett Foddy.

Deliver the delicate tadpole to the breeding pond without falling over, or you'll break it! The only problem is you're riding a unicycle.

Day 1- Fixed collisions and audio in Web build by disallowing persistent saving if on web.

Day 5- Fixed first death narration playing repeatedly

Really love the mood this game has. The delicate music and soft voice sucked me in and kept me playing longer than I normally would. The graphics are simple but very efficacious, and so is the gameplay. Games that are deliberately created to be difficult are not really my cup of tea, but I had a really good time playing this game!

This is nice. Relaxing and frustrating at the same time, a funny take on Getting Over it. The music being a slight variation of the classical piece playing in GOI is quite funny as well :D the gameplay and graphics are good. A beautiful background would definitely take this game to the next level. Great job!

I can definitely see the getting over it inspiration. I loved how intuitive the controls felt compared to that game though. Also, please tell me the main character is a frog solely so that you could make that pun

@jakobthequizguy thanks very much, yeah I would have liked to make a parallax background for sure.

@slimmerburger I'm glad you found the controls intuitive, I was worrying about that part!

I'm just starting testing games out but one of the best I've played so far. Very enjoyable to play, to look and to hear (especially just before going to bed :) )

I wasn't sure about the controls at first but it ends up being really easy to play.

Little something, in the web build I keep hearing the same dialog at some point. Yeah, I died a lot. I don't know if this is what "fix web audio" was about.

Wow! Awesome entry, controls feel very tight and each lose felt like my own fault (still didn't make it feel any less frustrating haha). Really enjoyed the voiceover and music, real getting over it vibe

@wafflesys Thank you so much, that's really nice to hear. What was the dialogue you kept hearing? The "Fixed web audio" was just that when I first published the game the HTML5 build was completely broken with audio and physics not working.

you did a really good job of replicating the feel of playing getting over it, while having completely different mechanics, well done!

I personally would have preferred having some checkpoints but making it harder to stay balanced, but I suppose that wouldn't have been as faithful to getting over it.

You've done well. Got that fun little "try a bit harder" approach, definitely got a few laughs from it

It got a little boring for me to keep doing the 'easy' first 30 seconds to get to the harder parts over and over again, but other than that it is amazing in every aspect. Very well done!

@c1fr1 thank you, yeah I was thinking about adding checkpoints but wasn't sure if that would change the dynamic too much and I ran out of time to implement them anyways

Nice and cute game! Gives me "over the garden's walls" vives. Voice acting is clean and really good. Graphics are cute. Controller feels very nice! It is super hard to me though, i couldnt beat it :(

Wow, this game looks great and I think you really nailed the theme. After some trial runs the balance and controls feels very good. The only annoying part is that the game over voice was playing all the time, I did get to me in the end so it would have been nice to only hear it once.

Haa Ha-ha… I suck with that kind of games, so I didn't manage to cross at least once XD But this was very fun to try, and I gave up only after failing just at the end of the third pond, I had no motivation to retry from the very start… ^^; Well done anyways!

Very neat, I've never played Getting Over It but I can certainly see the resemblance based on a few videos I've seen. The gameplay is nice and smooth, and the mechanic is well thought out, so really well done there. Graphics are simple and serve the purpose really well. The music really complements the mood too. The narration was definitely also a good addition, but I kept dying fairly quickly so I heard it a lot haha!

@destroyertech @wafflesys there seems to be a bug where the narration "So what's happened there is you've fallen over..." plays repeatedly when you die. This is only supposed to play on your first death so sorry about that, I'm sure that would be pretty annoying.

Sorry for whoever was effected, that must have been quite annoying. It is fixed now though  which would mean there is an extra narration line that you can hear if you never got past that first one, also there is some narration that plays if you go the wrong way.

I'm a simple man, I see Bennet Froggy, I click. Great pun with the title :D

On a more serious note: this was executed fantastically: graphics, music, voice, physics, control, overall mood, the frog and additional touches like the frog croaking when messing up - really a great entry, well done! I had lots of fun here! And it's very difficult :P

Fantastic job!

Nice homage to getting over it! I thought the unicycle mechanic fit really well for the theme and you executed the balancing game feel nicely. The art and music were cleaning and clear. You even did similar style voice overs :P

@Weirdybeardyman It wasn't that annoying because the voice is really soft and nice to hear. Sorry I didn't reply to your question earlier about which line dialogue was repeating, lack of time haha.
I'll replay your game later this week to see the issue fixed.

Finnaly got some time to play your game!! Sorry for being too late haha. This is brilliant, I love how you tied events to pre recorded messages, it works like a charm and gives the game a unique feeling. I'm really bad at this type of games so I haven't been able to complete it. But I did found the easter egg going backwards, nice detail!

Music is great and makes "frustrating game" a sense of relaxation. I'll keep trying to beat it tho, very very good job!

I couldn't get to the end after like 15 min (darn those ponds), but it feels I could get it eventually if I play a bit longer. Controls are in a nice spot where you can adjust but also over do if you're not careful. I like the art of the frog carrying the tadpole. nice job!

Great pun a name, and a very cute game! Compared to the original getting Over Over It, this one feel a lot easier to start of and get going instead of having to really learn a lot, but it feels really bad to have to get sent all the way back to start after going some distance. Still, the nice narration and aesthetics helped me pull through. :)
