Orbit by Wuppos

[raw]
made by Wuppos for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

Congratulations! You finished your basic theory training, which means you finally get to go on your first space flight! Today we will learn how to mine asteroids and how to keep your ship in orbit. Good luck!

  • A 2D space simulator, with only one powerful thruster. Can you master the tricky controls?
  • Prove your skills by putting your ship in a stable orbit around a planet!
  • Mine asteroids and sell them to regain your fuel.

I liked space themes, specially with orbit and thrust controls so I really liked yours. Graphics and audio are very good. Difficulty was a bit high (entering an stable orbit) could use more fuel to learn how to do it properly

best space themed game so far!

This was cool. I liked how you used the theme to describe the stability of the orbit of the ship. Tricky, but short and pretty fun to play.

The art and audio are great. I really like the colour palette. The movement feels cool, although the small field of view makes it very difficult to plan ahead. Having your orbit visualized in front of you and seeing it change as you apply your thrusters is neat. I had some fun blasting asteroids but wasn't quite able to pick up the fuel from any of them; I think the game would be improved a lot if you automatically collected the minerals upon breaking an asteroid.

@3lstmsinatrenchcoat Thank you very much for playing! I am happy you liked the audio because this was actually the first time I made some music for a game :D Also thank you for your great feedback!
You actually only gain minerals once you break the smallest asteroids, you don't have to pick them up. Good to know this was not very clear to you!

@lb01 @shootboots Thank you for playing! I am happy you guys liked it :D

@blackquiltro Hmm, good to know, thanks! Difficulty is pretty hard to judge when I am the only one playing it :) Thank you for playing!

I'm impressed by the amount of detail that went into this game. The controls feels good even though its very hard to get control of the ship. Very solid and polished experience overall.

Great work!

@appoxgames Thank you for playing and for your feedback! I actually massively overscoped this game at first, but I managed to cut a lot off stuff in order to make what I had as polished as possible. I am happpy you recognized that :D

Very hard to control, but very rewarding. The QOL things are very nice, from the trajectory of the ship to the direction of the ships/asteroids. Really nice work!

This is really cool, I love these kinds of orbital mechanic puzzle games! The art and music is nice too, so it feels like a complete game jam experience. Also nice work on getting the trajectory prediction in for a game jam, I made a similar mechanic for a game a few weeks ago and it took me a few days to figure out how to implement that. Great work!

@reccy Thank you very much for playing! I am happy you liked it :D For the trajectory prediction I actually got a lot of help from Google. People on the internet already tried a lot of things :) It is still not perfect, especially later on in the line, but it does the job

One of the best space themed games I have played today. Gameplay was efficient. The complete vibe to the game was very enjoyable. I grew up playing games like these so the nostalgia is there.

Challenging yet fun, great game.

This game is really fun and fit perfectly with the theme !

Pixel art is nice and effects are cool. The game is bit hard, but very addictive. It's a brillant idea to help the player by showing the orbit trajectory and a warning message when the orbit is unstable (great feature, keep it).

Controls are simple to learn but hard to master, that's make the game very elegante.

Great job !

@duck-reaction I am happy to hear that you liked the game, even though it is hard. It was a bit of a puzzle to detect whether an orbit was somewhat stable, so it is nice that you recognized it :D Thanks for playing!

Love the physics and the music! The yellow tint of the game looks great too. Good job! 👍

Coming and leaving a planet was the really challenging part and I it took me a while to understand that you needed to leave your ship and come back to sell stuff.

I would have liked to be able to use W and S to move forwad and backward, turning the ship was not very handy and I didn't feel it added much to the gameplay.

this is a lot of fun and something super unique to the theme and I love the look too, can tell this wasn't easy, it's definitely difficult but it adds to the fun I think

@dekajoo Thanks a lot for playing! Yeah, I had one playtester and they had exactly the same problem. I tried to make it a bit clearer in the tutorial, but unfortunately I did not have enough time to come up with a better solution. About the controls, I think I disagree. I had it programmed in a way that you could also use W and S, but it made flying too easy in my opinion. I also liked the fact that you had to rotate 180 in order to slow down. But, considering so many people found the controls very hard, you might be right. Thank you very much for your honest feedback! I appreciate it :D

@smt Thank you for playing! I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the difficulty :)

@slimmerburger Thanks a lot for playing! I am happy you liked the visuals! I wonder what you think about the gameplay though :) I would love some criticism!

The game gave me exploration vibes similar to elite dangerous I had a good amount of fun with it, it was hard tho every mistake I made could lead to my death but because of that I had to be careful and it made the space theme even stronger great job.

I really enjoyed the gameplay mechanics and atmosphere that you created with the visuals and sound effects. The use of icons to show nearby objects was clever and helped make up for the limited field of view. Definitely challenging, especially when trying to get a stable orbit, but I found myself keeping at it and gradually getting better and better. Nice game!

I really like the limited color pallet! The music reminded me of the old "Commander Keen" soundtracks. Overall it was a good look and feel for the game. Unstable orbit is a great take on the theme, I just couldn't overcome it! It was a bit too difficult for me but some games are going for that difficult, practice till you master style. Great job!

Super cool game! I really liked the audio and visual effects it felt very good controlling the ship.
I think the planets gravity is a bit too strong but other than that I didn't find the game too difficult, maybe my KSP gameplay sessions paid off at last :)

@pixelydian I do not know Commander Keen, but I gave the soundtrack a listen. It sounds cool :) This was the first time I tried to make some music for my game, so I am happy it reminded you of something ^_^ Thanks a lot for playing and your nice feedback!

Really cool, liked it a lot. Proper theme usage in a fun gameplay. Minor issues: maybe the pointers to planet and asteroids could be a little smaller in screen? Also a little more fuel? It's very hard to accomplish much with this quantity. These, as I said, are minor problems and overall the game is very fun.

Yeah, those markers are a bit big, I agree! The thing is that I did not have time to draw them again, but I wanted to stay on resolution :) More fuel might have been a good idea indeed. Thanks for the feedback :D

It's a great game, much harder than it looks, I played it for a long time even though it doesn't even have a goal) I think it would be great to add points or control points or flight range. it's also very annoying with the twitching camera

Really awesome idea and execution. Loved the graphics and the controls. The orbiting was pretty difficult! I feel like giving more fuel at the beginning would have made the trial and error of finding the right orbit a bit fun. Having to redo the asteroid part over and over because I couldn't hit the orbit with enough gas made it a little repetitive. Overall all though, really like it! Awesome work.

@lovor I am happy you liked it :D Thank you very much for playing

I am not sure what you mean by control points and flight range. Do you mean like respawn points? Or points of interest to fly to? I think I would agree with both of those ideas XD And about the twitching camera, do you mean when you enter planets? I totally agree there as well. That needs a bit more polish

Thank you very much for your great feedback! ^_^

@echo-gameworks Thank you for playing and for taking the time to write down some great feedback! ^_^ I totally agree with both of those points. A lot of people have suggested to have more fuel, which I think is a very good idea. I can see that having to re-mine the asteroids is annoying. Maybe I could have let you keep your inventory when you die and keep the progress in the tutorial. Thanks again! :D
