The idea is great - it does fit the theme, and works fairly well, but a ton of text to read. Well done!

I could smash those hippies boats and kill those devil-beasts all day. I thought this was a really nice twist on the theme.

Interesting take on the theme and clever use of it too ^^
The one thing that bothered me a bit was that the boat was way too slow for my taste without the speed boost.

Good entry =)

Great take on the theme. It's a bit uncomfortable to not be able to use boost while dumping oil.

Very fun strategy to this game and fits the theme well!

5th place. Really fun game. I wish everything was sped up slightly - having to wait for your boat to trek from one side to the other got tedious.

An extremely funny over-the-top game. The gameplay and graphics are pretty good as well.

Nice game, fun to play, but it's a bit slow and a lot to read.

Lovely game, fits the theme well. I like the way the oil spreads.

Really good idea, you could build up on in a bit more and make it into a full fledged game 4real :)

Nice idea, the tutorial never disappeared which was annoying

Wevel - if you press T multiple times it will queue up the tutorial over and over.

I wish the controls were more responsive. It feels like they assigned a direction for 'x' time and couldn't be overwritten instead of moving you when you pressed them. Very good otherwise.

Stephen - The game works on a grid system, so you have to finish moving to the next grid cell before you can change directions. With how slow the tanker moves, I can see how this would be confusing.

How do I run this in Linux? There are no instructions...

neat idea, boat too slow, more oil, more barrels the better

kakarotsan - sorry, there is an executable in the tarball that you can run. You may be able to double click it from your file manager or something (I am not sure as I do not use many gui applications). I run it from the terminal by typing something like the following:

tar -zxf HydroCarbon-linux.tgz
cd HydroCarbon
./HydroCarbon

I agree with the others, the boat is just too slow! Neat idea though.

This game had a cool concept and I thought it used the theme well. The graphics weren't bad but here are things I didn't like:

1. The boat moved too slow.
2. There was a lot of information to read and it seemed like maybe there were too many mechanics to learn (even if there weren't actually that many).

I think faster movement and pace/less text would make this more fun.

Good take on the theme and good idea overall. It would be nice if the boat was a little faster by default, but it was fun nonetheless. Almost a variation on snake. Nice work!

Ritght on the theme, an oil tanker destroyng the environement is monstruous! :D
The game is fun, the music is cool and the graphics are good pixel art. The idea is original.
The only complait I have is that the boat is a bit slow...

I wish the boat moved a bit faster, but great game. I included it in part 6 of my Ludum Dare 33 Compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/keaznjOtLXA

Nice concept, by which I mean horrible concept, by which I mean good job fitting the theme! Also some really nice artwork. I did find that the very slow normal (non-boosted) speed of the boat made the game feel quite sluggish and detracted from the fun of it a bit.

It's nice idea! The dual use of oil is nice.
The game has potentials!
I wish the game could be faster-paced.

Hillarious concept. It was fun making the sea run black with crude. I was unable to completely blackout the sea, but I did $82,200 in damage on my second attempt. The game seemed to always know what to spawn for me, which kept it moving and was nice.

Loved the old man gfx with the moving mouth. Good stuff.

Nicely done!!

I like how you took the theme and made a rather funny game out of it.

- awesome concept
- music is good
- boat is a bit slow
- boats would be more fun to control if they weren't limited to grid based movement and had some momentum
- i like how the oil spreads
- ending was cool

I liked how well this game is put together. Everything seemed to balance well. The more oil spilled, the harder it is to protect your "investment" from hippies.

On the other hand, it felt really slow when I wasn't using my precious oil to speed along, and once you had a lot of coverage out there, it seemed animals wouldn't show up as often.

The music was good, and the sound effects worked well.

GBGames - the animal issue is a result of the fact that animals will not spawn in the oil.

When an animal is spawned, it's position is chosen randomly from the entire map. If the position is not clear water, the spawn is abandoned and the game waits for the spawn timer to trigger again.

I suppose I could reroll the location until clear water is found or perhaps just reduce the delay until the next spawn and hope the randomization takes care of it.

Slow and a bit easy, the environmentalists don't come around very often and by the end I filled the whole map with oil so by cleaning it they actually gave me opportunity to score more points
but it was a cool game.
