Hook Fishes - Get Money by YaakGold

[raw]
made by YaakGold for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Description

In this 2D fishing simulator, your goal is to go out to sea every day and pick up some fish. Luckily your local fishing shop is constantly looking to buy fish from you. They are also kind enough to sell upgrades for your boat so that you can catch more expensive fish, as well as protect yourself from the sharks that infest your sea.

Try and make the most amount of net profit, and survive for as long as you can!

Controls

A/D (or Left and Right Arrow) - Left and Right movement

Mouse - Move the hook

Left-click - Attempt to catch a fish

Goals

Collect as many fish you can during the day, so that when you go to the market, you have the opportunity to make more money. You can then use the money you make at the market to buy upgrades for your boat. Whether it be a longer fishing line to catch some deep fish, or it be some extra defenses to fight against the aggressive sharks.

Changelog

V1.1:

3 things were changed. -First: you can now click on a fish without having to have your mouse move off of it, making it easier to catch a fish. -Second: After the bucket upgrade to hold 200 pounds, each upgrade increases by 20 pounds instead of 10, making the difficulty of upgrading better late game. -Third: the upgrades panel now explicitly states that the chance of catching a fish also increases when you upgrade the hook, instead of it just stating that it upgrades the amount of fish it can hold.

END V1.1

So, here are the things that kept me from enjoying this game: first of all, the upgrades are way too expensive. I played for probably 20 minutes and could only afford a couple of the cheaper ones. Also, catching fish is frustrating. I couldn't figure out whether it was random or if there's some technique to it, but it seems like I have a roughly 1/10 chance of actually catching a fish when I click on it, and the rest of the time it just makes that noise. It would be way better if it just worked every time, or if you needed to click a clearly indicated area, or something. That being said, I like the music, and the visual variety in the fish is cool. Also, the shark lunging my boat tail first was hilarious.

Its actually suprisingly fun. The pricing and upgrades are well balanced. I also like how the visuals of the boat actually changes when you bought an upgrade. Though its quite annoying that the success rate isn't upgradable and the fish ai is quite dumb for a fishing game.

I had quite a bit of fun with this game. Graphics could use a lot of work but it was a good concept. I have no idea how the actual catching mechanic worked though, I ended up just flailing my mouse around some fish spamming left click and I would usually eventually catch one. I ran into problems where it thought I caught a fish but there wasn't anything on my hook. This was a big problem when the fish I hooked was too big to fit in my bucket and then couldn't remove the invisible fish from hook and then trying to end the day the fish was still there the next day and still couldn't fit in my bucket. I also think those sharks have some sort of rocket strapped to their back with how they sometimes propel themselves backwards 50 feet into the air 😄

@foopy It's never explicitly said, but when you upgrade your hook the success rate increases as well. I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

I guess the challenge was reaching the fish rather than having them have a smart AI lol.

@quinn-patrick @shubart

Thank you for pointing that out! After another playtest or two I realized the player could not click on a fish twice. The updated version should be posted soon for anyone interested!

Also quinn-patrick, thank you for the detailed response. The success rate is actually an upgradable aspect (though was never explicitly said, there will soon be an update for it) so that is why you could not catch the fish every time. I'm glad you liked the music! I wrote it myself

Nice game, the sharks and the upgrade system made it fun to play, and selling your fish felt satisfying. I did not like the success rate mechanic though; I found that that the most efficient way to catch a fish was to click on it repeatedly, resulting in hearing the miss sound many times in a row, which was rather annoying and distracted from the music.

A lot of fun once you figure it out! I could see this being a really popular app. I feel like at the beginning of the game the combination of the slow boat speed and one-minute timer makes it hard to progress. I feel like either a faster boat or a longer timer would make the game more accessible.
