Squiddies decent by Rialgar

[raw]
made by Rialgar for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Screenshot of the game. It is in grey tones. A pixelated squid is standing in a Labyrinth. Nearby are a trail of ink splotches, torches to pick up and stairs leading down.

Squiddie wants to go as far down into the Labyrinth as they can.

Light will reduce with each step. Collect torches to replenish light. When you run out of light, the game ends. Move quickly for a high score.

This game is fully implemented using html5 + javascript. Any modern browser should be able to run it, but I only tested in Google Chrome.

WASD/Arrows to move.

I feel like this game is a bit easy since I only found out that my light was going out once I came back and re-read the game page. It has a pretty unique idea which is enjoyable though.

A solidly designed maze game; I feel like I would have preferred if the timer were turn-based rather than real time, though! Nice clean look and monochrome palette, everything was very easy to read. Good job!

Well done, great game ! Simple yet hard to put down. I love it :) I think this is a great game / fidget game to play when suffering from anxiety, it surely helped me calm down post LD ! :D LOVE IT

Good maze game, nice visuals, the only complaint: it is very hard to die. You literally have to seat though tens of minutes before you lose. This game's gameplay is not engaging enough for that. I think having tighter requirements for the player (say, have smaller torch "bank" (maybe restoring torches every level to balance this out)) would help this game greatly. I would enjoy it much more if i died faster and had to learn from my mistakes. This is common gamedesign knowledge that it is just simply more fun than to see your past mistakes unravel slowly in front of you except for a strategy game (as this game does, in the matter of your missteps granting you less torches to work with in the next levels). Instant rewards. Instant punishments. Anyways, i liked the visuals and the idea is fun. Good job.

I like the sence of progression, when you're going down. The only thing at some point I felt like it's a bit too easy and I realized, that the light isn't shrinking, so my whole playthrough was in the noob mode. I think it's a bug worth investigating.

Awesome job! The graphics are so simple but polished, and the transitions are really nice. It's a simple concept but you executed it very well.

Good maze game, the character is cute, but maybe you could add some timming and life ? So, well done !

Really clean graphics, felt like I had to choose myself when to give up rather than just dying? I hit 0 on what I assumed was light level but it just seems to stay. Other than that, it was a blast to play.

Very nice maze game. The movement feels nice and smooth and the torch mechanic was interesting.
I played about 20 levels but never notice the light shrinking though.

@skoopidy yeah, the light mechanic turned out to be limiting my design choices, because once it shrinks below a certain size it makes finding anything basically impossible. Also the light is based on steps, not time, if you move quickly and do not collect torches the game will be over quickly as well. The idea was to give the player a choice, play slow and carefully, which might get you down further, or quick and risky with a chance of a high score.

I found the game loop to be pretty addictive, and I liked the clean visuals. The controls felt pretty good too. I thought that overall the game was a bit easy. I never ran out of light, and just decided to stop when I hit a score of 150k

Had a lot of fun with the gameplay loop - did about 20 levels. I also though the controls were really good which is an important in a game like this. Great work!

Solid idea and execution.

It may a little bit too much on the easy side though. It took me a while to run out of light, even when trying on purpose. I'm not sure what the real-time countdown represents if not the remaining time with light.

It was an enjoyable experience all the same. Congratulations.

Fun game, maybe a little too easy, but I very much appreciated the trail of ink. Having a trail helps on a maze/exploration. Really enjoyed the mood/graphics.

This was really fun! I was really impressed with how balanced the game felt. The scoring was really fair as I got to more and more difficult mazes.

Pretty great concept! I like the minimalist approach, the only thing that feels missing is some music & sounds. Fairly light use of the theme, but overall a solid entry.

Loved the simplicity and the graphics (for me light mechanics are always fun). As some other people have noted having some audio/music would definitely be a benefit. Also the controls felt very snappy, even though the movement was animated (or did I just imagine this?). Anyway, great job with this entry!
