The Deep Well by BlueDingo

[raw]
made by BlueDingo for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

You play as a miner mining in an abandoned well looking for rare crystals, the darker the crystal, the more its worth.

This is just a quick 3 level game where you mine ores before the time expires.

There's no audio.

You control the player with WASD and can pause the game by pressing double tapping Esc.3Crystals.png

Oh man, I spent way longer on this game trying to beat level 2 than I thought I did! Super fun. Could have definitely benefitted from audio but I liked feeling like a Snow White dwarf.

Short and simple, looks pretty good. Definitely could use some audio, but a solid submission nonetheless :)

The hitbox for hitting/missing a target feels a bit off or unfair at times... The lack of obstacles on the playing arena makes the experience rather empty in my opinion. Walls, pits, enemies, traps, portals, springs, ice, sticky goop, lava, etc. are all good options to spice up the environment.

Another consideration that could elevate this game is a mechanic in which you mine a type of crystal to regain some time on your timer. This would then let players make interesting realtime decisions of "continue mining" vs. "refill on time".

This game really reminds me of what I can imagine an old windows desktop game could have been. I would love to see it explored more, maybe with different power-ups (like running faster, quicker swings of the pickaxe), as well as terrain differences. Fantastic job though working within the parameters of the game jam.

this is good, but there is something that I lacked, the simplest sounds, in principle, it is clear what to do, but at first I got confused. It was possible to add to the game or in the description, which crystal gives how much, as I understood, each crystal gives a different amount. The sensitivity is less and good)

games with no sound are tedious quickly. the graphics are ok and good cutscene. good

Finished all 3 levels. It's a bit bareboned, there wasn't much for me to get excited. Challenge doesn't really ramp up when you get more valuable minerals to mine on each level. Nonetheless, good job on finishing the jam!

Nice game! Could use a little more challenges, it was a bit too easy running around and mining with nothing to stop me. But I had fun playing through the 3 levels!
Congrats on you entry!

Cool environment. I think brighter lighting effects and sound could really elevate this. The rounds were down to the last seconds every time which made it intense. Good job balancing that.

I think you could've really used some sound. Especially with your intro, which I really like - the zoom into the well then orienting yourself before having the axe come into view felt good. I had some trouble with the hitboxes at first but got the hang of it in the end and got through all 3 levels. Good use of colours btw One thing I thought might happen was that the gravity would change and I would be mining on the adjacent walls as I could see gems on them, I think that could make a cool twist on the "Levels" just being different walls you fall onto. Well done for getting this all in on your own.

It feels satisfying to collect the crystals. :-) I would have liked if the lighting was good from all angles; depending on where I was, sometimes I could hardly tell what colors the crystals were.

Finished all 3! Cut it pretty close at the end! I liked that there was a slow animation punishment mechanic built into the axe to stop you from just spam clicking

Simple but really addictive, and the difficulty is really nice too, which make me keep replaying. Nice works! Maybe it will be more fun if the attack speed can be faster.
