There's gold in these hills! There must be a motherlode in the centre of the earth, you can feel it in your bones... You've created a new mining company — it's riches or bust!
In Dig Dig Dig, the goal is to get as far down into the earth as possible, hopefully gaining as much stock in your company as you can on the way down. Don't let your ambitions get ahead of you, though... if your mineshaft goes off screen, you go bust!
Gameplay
Mine
Click a mineable tile, or hold the mouse button down on a mineable tile.

Use abilities
- Right click on a hidden tile to perform an assay. (Reveals tiles around it.)
- Upon discovering explosives, left click them to pick them up.
- Right click on an empty tile to place an explosive. Right click on a placed explosive for fun!

About the development
So, eight hours after the start of this Ludum Dare, I spotted someone I follow on YouTube streaming Ludum Dare development, and I was like... you know what? It's been like... years, since I last participated. And I've grown a lot as a developer, you know? As everyone tends to with years of practice. So I decided to join! Yeah, sure, I'd already missed eight hours, but did that really matter that much?
In the end, no, it didn't really matter that much. I was able to do a lot more in this than I expected, pretty much all of my initial ambitions were met, along with a bunch of things I hadn't even thought of in the initial concept.
As the last time I did Ludum Dare, this project was made completely from scratch, with zero libraries. It's written entirely in TypeScript, along with a small amount of HTML and SCSS to facilitate displaying the actual game.
Also as last time, I'm entering the compo specifically so that I only have the 48 hours to make the game, but I'm not actually super interested in following through with other people's projects. So I'm guessing I won't get many plays, but that's okay with me — I was participating more to make the game, after all.
Anyway, I think that's about it. If you do play, thanks for playing! 🤍
Post-submission changes
- Fix: Music now plays by default (this is what happens when you add the music literally one minute before the deadline)
- Fix: Added in detection for another game-over state that was never encountered in development, which otherwise was a softlock
- Balance: Ores no longer push the screen down. Mining gold keeps investors happy 💰
- Fix: The game is now capped at 60fps (no more turbo speed for 144hz players)

Design wise, the lack of obstacle/hazards means that I don't have anything to come challenge me, so the game gets repetitive quite fast, without any reason to go deeper apart from increasing my score.
Loved the music !

One thing I noticed is that when I was mining and the camera moved, it would stop mining. It might be cool to have it so that even if the camera moves, you still mine in the direction relative to where you were previously mining before the camera moved. I'm not actually sure if that would work well, but just throwing out an idea!
Great job!
I think what you might be experiencing with the camera thing is that when you start mining, the screen is in the process of moving, so when the screen finally catches up with you, your mouse is no longer on a mineable tile. I think in the post-LD version I'll let the player mine in a direction like you said though, or something like that at least. Because after playing it for uhh... probably too many hours, I definitely agree.
Thanks for the feedback! 🤍
I progress kept me going and I like out with time surveying became more expensive, though I wish there were more generated structures and TNT and overall more gold because there were time where I had 20+ blocks with nothing.
Great submission!
