Octopus Dive by JedeMac

[raw]
made by JedeMac for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

My very first Jam!

I didn't have much time to work on a very deep gameplay, so I guess this game is more about the atmosphere.

It includes a wonderful soundtrack made by my amazing friend.

Any suggestion to improve the concept is greatly appreciated.

Your objective is to reach the bottom of the ocean to lay your eggs.

You will need to eat small fish and avoid bigger predators to survive on the way down there.

This game is rly good, it has a nice blend of movement, gathering, and timing. Just a nice experience of being an octopus. The graphics and audio make rly set the mood too, and I love the educational tidbits.

Really nice game. Managed to get through first try with only a single tentacle left. The narration was very nice and made it feel very personal which I really enjoyed! Great work!

Thanks for all the nice comments, I really appreciate the feedback :D

This was my first Ludum Dare, and I really enjoyed the experience.
I thought it was just a nice personal challenge, but it's actually so much more than that. Seeing all the different contributions, what works and what doesn't, how other people approached the theme. It's a fantastic experience and I look forward to the next one :)

Very nice game! I died the first time but then I got the hang of the mechanics and finished in 2 minutes :stuck_out_tongue: I liked the tentacles mechanic a lot to eat and the fact that they are your lives  Congratulations!

The music was really nice. I enjoyed the procedural animations; having done a tiny bit of that myself I know it's harder to do right than one would think.

My critique is that it was a little confusing that the eels could eat your tentacles, but had to get to your body to do so. As a result, it felt kind of weird to lure the eels into my tentacles so that I could ink them.

I appreciated the bittersweet end, which went well with the music.

Very fun and educational game! Would be perfect in a classroom. Games like this are great ways to help kids learn about things simply and intuitively. Great job!

Thanks everyone, all those nice comments are incredibly motivating!

@youthfulidealism totally, and I'm still not completely satisfied with the movement of the tentacles, especially when the octopus is not moving, I tried tweaking the movement but it looked messy.

I'm thinking about adding a circle showing the aggro radius when the octopus move, it would make facing the eels less confusing. (also I think the image I chose for the game presentation doesn't help, since in game you aren't supposed to fight the eels with your arm^^).

I felt bad not giving people 5 stars before, but your game definitely deserves all 5. Great gameplay, audio, graphics, everything was amazing. I especially loved the octopus facts, although the last one was kinda sad :(
Amazing job!!! Best game I have seen yet!

This was really fun! I love how the octopus and eels move. The ink was challenging for me, but I think that might be entirely user error. The music and facts as you go down made the vibe 10/10. Well done!

Loved the music and general atmosphere of the game. Plus, I learned some cool octopus facts! The UI could use some polish. I would love to see what you could come up with given more time!

@dimonoider To eat : Use right-click to attack small fish with your tentacles. Make sure you have enough stamina. Approach the fish slowly because if you go fast they run away. Once you are close enough just grab one by holding right-click on top of the school of fish.

Such a cool and original game. We definitely need more games where you play an octopus! XD Loved the animations and mechanics of the game. I couldn't figure out how to avoid the eel or use the ink (maybe I missed the instructions). Nice work!

Despite being eaten alive, I was thoroughly relaxed throughout the entire experience! Love the proc. animations for the eels and the tentacles, very fun to go around just catching fish, and I enjoyed the Octopus facts along the way down to the bottom haha. Good job!

Nice! Well done! I think my favorite part was how the steady movement of the octopus lined up with the rhythm of the music. Nice touch. There are a lot of well done things here. Leg count is health. Hunger is separate from health. That just makes sense even if it's not a gaming standard. My only complaint is that the eels are too fast. I even tried moving slowly/not at all and still got attacked. I made it past the "halfway" point before I lost. AND PHENOMENAL ANIMATIONS. WELL. DONE.

Such a nice game, the atmospheric is great (and the gameplay is also good, I would have expected much less after your text ;-)) Hunting with the armes is a nice implemented mechanic, to indicate your "lives" by your missing armes is cruel but very fitting to your game.
The relaxing background music isn´t on loop I think, on my first attemt it took me some time to get down... ;-)

If I want to complain, I would think that the Ink could have been more effective, but thats complaining on a high level.

The text with the informations are very nice and make at last a good move to the theme.

The animations are great.

A very nice entry, thank you very much!

Solid relaxing game. I liked the music and sounds. Octopus animations were fluid and it was very satisfying see the tentacles catch a fish :)
The octopus facts were interesting, but I couldn't get to the end as I was too hasty and an eel came before I could react to it. This game is not for rushing

The only complain I have is that it's sometime hard to catch food with the weird auto aim, but I still managed to reach the end. Congratulation on your game!
