Bungee Thief by Zomk

[raw]
made by Zomk for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Deep in the night you are trying to rob the biggest bank in the city full of coins. Because of the tight security you can only enter it through the ceiling. So you've got the idea to rope down.

But watch out - the spinning razor blades will kill you if you don't pay attention!

Get the highest score by picking up as many coins as possible and secure your loot by returning before it's too late. There is always the urge to go down a little bit deeper to steal even more money, but that might cost you your life!

Controls:

  • use arrow keys (<- and ->) to move left and right

  • use space to return safely (if you get killed you lose your score so don't forget to use this!)

Nice graphics and good control. But I figure the rope should have been severed multiple times

The gameplay is fun, and the visuals are great, especially for a jam game. I think it would work great as a mobile game, well done!

I couldn't really pick the coins on the sides of the map because of how slow you are on the sides but I managed to go relatively deep (I think ?).
I think it is strange that you have to press space to end your run and validate your score (I get what you would want to do that but I don't think it fits the gameplay here, because you want to continue playing, why would you want to stop your run if didn't lose ?).
Great game anyway !

Nice idea! Is the level endless or does it end at some point? I tried to make it to bottom but couldn't :D

Cute art, fitting music and quite addictive too! I really liked the return mechanic, really adds some intensity knowing you can lose it all if you push too far. Great work!

Very nice game!

If you haven't already considered adding a few more levels and publishing it to mobile... I think you should

✔️ Overall nice visuals with the lighting.

✔️ Spawning a platform full of coins at the bottom when you died was a clever move.

➖ I didn't really see the point of the returning mechanic to keep your score.

After dying I thought I would be able to reach the bottom, but I guess it just appears when you die :joy:. I could see the returning being some kind of upgrade loop. The movement was very interesting since the rope is "swinging". One thing I kept trying to do was tap the key to go left or right faster, but it was actually better to hold it down. Overall nice work!

Nicely done, seeing the bottom after I died really made me want to go deeper and deeper to reach those nice shiny coins :)

I really like this idea!

I think it might have been better if your score was kept between runs if you press S and you only lose it if you die. You could also make coins and razors more frequent as you go deeper and deeper. That way it would feel more like the dilemma you were going for, like "should I stop now and keep my score or go deeper and increase my risk + reward?" and it feels more impactful if you die

This is still a good game tho!

@shawk The difficulty/frequency of the coins/razors increases the deeper you go. But maybe I have to adjust the "difficulty increase" for later versions :D

I wish it had a bit more of a gradual difficulty curve. I found it pretty hard from the get-go. If there was audio, then it was too low for me to really hear. If there wasn't, I'd suggest adding some would really add to the mood. Art style, concept, and core gameplay loop were all solid.
