You need a minimum of 100 fuel to warp to a new sector, and you must hold shift long enough for that fuel to be used, otherwise you shoot off into the distance and lose the fuel. Currently, a maximum of 200 fuel can be used for a warp, after which the warp will end on it's own. Unfortunately, there's not actual GUI feed back yet on when the warp has consumed enough fuel, so you kinda have to wing it.\n\nFly through a nebula to passively gain fuel. The fuel rate is massively boosted as it's the only source for fuel right now.
