Run, Glim, Run! by Neshtyak

[raw]
made by Neshtyak for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

When a cave creature named Glim wandered underground, one of the walls cracked and water gushed out behind him. Little Glim hates water and can't live without light.

Collect fireflies, jump on platforms, beware of stalagmites and most importantly: DO. NOT. TOUCH. THE WATER.

Cute game! I really dig the artstyle and the music, it has a lot of charm and the music and art have a great mood. I really enjoyed the quick storyboard/comic at the beginning setting up the story. The jumping felt a little underpowered and I felt like I could never jump up to a good amount of platforms, with some minor tweaking though this would make the game even better =]. I think the one tap/button design of this could work well on a mobile/tablet device too! Great stuff and great job.

This is a very nice little infinite runner. I found the art very pleasing and your music was good as well. I will say I did find at one point I died rather unexpectedly I assume from running into stalagmites. I wish there was some indication that this was happening (assuming that it was happening and I didn't miss something else.)

Great game! The way that Glim rolls around is so cute. I liked how it felt like a platformer but there was only one button input. It took me a bit to get the hang of it but then I got into a good flow. The music is impressive too - few games have menu and game over music as well as the main soundtrack.

@2bitcrook Thank you for your feedback <3
Also about adding controls to the mobile/tablet, we were just thinking about this, so we will most likely try to add a mobile option soon =)

@theseusinabottle Thanks for feedback =)
Yeah we've found out that stalagmites are not really noticeable and we'll try to change it in future small fixes.
But for now to make it clear: when you bump into the stalagmite, the water is approaching. And if you bump into the second stalagmite before the water goes back, then this is the end of the game :)

Nice auto-runner! The stalagmites were a bit unforgiving, though; whenever I had to jump to a higher platform to dodge a stalagmite or get light I would always land on top of a stalagmite since I couldn't see them.

@peace-of-cake-games Hah yeah stalagmites are nasty. But we are going to fix them in the nearest future. Anyway, thanks for your feedback <3

Very nice game! I love the art for Glim and the art style overall. The gameplay is fun and challenging, though to me the jump felt a bit weird. I'd like to have a bit more control of Glim while he's jumping but that's also part of the challenge with timing your jumps.

Great job all around! Your team did great work creating a fun game that fits together nicely. Well done all!

Really cool endless runner! I enjoyed the visuals and music a lot, they are both awesome!
The gameplay works quite well too, but there are a few issues. It is a bit down to luck if you survive when falling off a platform, as you cannot see or react to whats below. And there are a lot of pits and stalagmites :) I'd suggest experimenting a bit with the field of view, maybe seeing more would already mitigate this. Also, some kind of reaction when falling down could help, maybe add a double jump and allow one jump while falling down?
Enjoyed this a lot nonetheless, it got really quite frantic later on. Good job overall!

Took me several tries to realize why I was dying. Seemed like the water would go away and come back with no clear reason. The art is nice, and as a base of an infinite runner seems like it is going somewhere.

Really cute, kinda chaotic (in positive way) game! The first few tries was a little confusing dute to no momentum added to the jumps, but when the tempo speeds up its mostly fun. I think it's a shame that the game doesn't have any ending or indicator if you beat "enough" of the game. I think I did pretty well, but at the end I think something glitched and it was game over. Very fun experience nonetheless!

Fun simple game, quite difficult and takes some time to figure out that the spikes actually do anything since you pass right through them. Nice graphics, would have been nice if there was just a restart button instead of having to go back to the main menu.

6 stars for the soundtrack! Is is downright the best music I have heard in an LD game this year. The game itself is very fun to play. It is easy to learn, hard to master! The story makes sense (cat-like creature hating water haha) The graphics are nice too, but not special in my opinion, sorry

I found a bug btw, I don't know how to reproduce. The second time I played, I spawned in an empty world where Grim was rolling on noting and the water would catch up. There were no platforms

I had fun playing your game, well done!

Pretty simple, standard gameplay, but the graphics are great! I like the music too. I didn't understand how the "health system" worked until I saw your comment explaining it - I think that needs to be spelled out better, and maybe some visual + audio feedback when I hit a stalagmite.

Great looking game, but I wasn't able to jump on any of the platforms, the jump height is too low, maybe it's bugged for me, or am I missing something. I tried both long and short spacebar press, but same height and it's not enough to get on a platform.

This is the max height, hope you can see it, it's pretty dark(had to pause the game to capture it)

@mololo Oh that's strange. Seems like the game bugged, because jump height is enough to even overjump platforms hah. Try to play it again, if this problem occurs again, please let us know!

Nice cute endless runner! Loved the art style and the music.

Some visual/audio feedback when hitting a stalagmite would have been nice. But the largest concern for me was the jumping, it didn't feel like it was in-synch with key pressing or rather maybe it didn't feel like the platforms were quite at a correct distance to how much Glim could jump.

Congrats on making this nice game and getting that nice feel of it!

Cool main character and funny music))

The great thing is that over time, the game speeds up, thereby not letting you get bored

It was fun to run away from the waves. In general, I liked the game))

Great music, impressive to have three tracks for the different parts of the game. They set the mood well. The character art was also fun. The stalagmites didn't "feel" like obstacles because they were just grey rock, the same as the platforms. Perhaps sticking with the "water bad" theme and making them geysers would be more consistent. The collision on them also wasn't reliable and appeared to get even less reliable at higher speeds, making it difficult to lose.

Fun game. Took me a few runs to figure out what I was doing (I should've read the menu lol), but it was a lot of fun once I did. Hit a score of about 800 woohoo
