Description

My Dentures is a game about going deeper and deeper into the drain to recover something really important.

The jam experience...

I really really lose my hand on the scope on this one, I have to adapt the gameplay many times because halfway I knew that there's no chance I’ll finish it in time, I was very surprised that the gameplay turns quite fun after so much adaptation.

I only wish I have the time to fix some edge cases, because of the way I implemented randomness in the game, it could generate really really easy runs or really hard ones, still, I think anyone could complete in a couple of tries and less than 5 minutes.

* I hope you guys have fun with it, It was super fun to mess around with this concept during the jam! *

INSTRUCTIONS/CONTROLS:

  • You will go down when Steps == 0

Love the graphics...and the concept. Good job.

Haha very fun! How to play the game wasn't too clear, but it might've just been my tendency to skip all the instructions and go straight to playing the game.

Really cool Idea and realization. But I am very often confused about buttons.

I played this a bit. It was much more fun once I realised I could use spacebar to drop - you left this out of the instructions! I noticed the mouse highlights squares too but I couldn't click on anything.

I should have started with a compliment... This is a really interesting concept and the art style is very well done - minimalist but not without sophistication. Great job! The gameplay is fun - I think the animations and sound effects are a big part of this. The drop in particular is really satisfying - the way the levels tween upwards as you drop - it's beautifully timed. I found using arrows to move on an isometric board to be confusing. Maybe mouse is a better option? I see what you mean about randomly generated levels - I didn't get the sense the difficulty was related at all to my "level". Great work for a weekend though. You have the guts of a cool game here. :)

Nice and simple, but still very fun. The layer dropping is a good mechanic.

I really enjoyed this. It took me a second to figure out how to move with the isometric grid (although this is more a me thing as I lack the IQ points to be able to understand isometric anything). I find the forced drop mechanic to be quite interesting as I found myself trying to move so that I landed on the next grid in a place closer to the item I wanted. You mention in the description that you had to cut back the scope of the game while developing it. I gotta say its impressive that while cutting ideas you managed to have such a cohesive game. Even your graphical style is really solid and doesn't have much of a "I ran out of time" look to it. My only complaint is that if you run out of moves on grid 15 you just have to press R and restart. I would have liked to have seen a "Out of Moves" prompt or something. Overall you did really good and I really enjoyed this.

Really fun game, the graphics are so cool! The turn-based movement is a cool idea when combined with the falling and pick up mechanics. Such a unique game!

Nice game, that's was a good idea to let the player see on which case he's gonna fall next.

Played for about half an hour with my partner. She loved it! Very addicting simple mechanics. You did a great job executing this idea. Could definitely see this as a mobile game as well. Keep it up!

This is excellent! Ended up doing a couple of runs, even though I got lucky and won on my first one. The mechanics are intuitive but open up room for interesting strategies, and the look and feel is really polished.

Great concept :D And the game is actually fun too! Good job, feels really complete.

The movement controls don't map really well to the isometric view, maybe an on screen reminder of which key will send the player in which direction could be helpful. I often found myself moving to a tile I didn't want to move to, because the directional input wasn't intuitive. ***But*** when I was able to move where I wanted, the game really worked for me. Nice work!

Hey, this is brilliant!

Very fun concept and super neat execution, I like how you can outmaneuvre enemies to kill them on the same layer as you.

I agree with other commenters that the isometric movement is a bit unintuitive, maybe allow mouse cursor movement in a complete version?

Beautiful game. I like the grid aesthetic and the animated jiggles. The gameplay is solid and fun, the stomp mechanic is so satisfying.

Very elegant. You can understand very easily and yet you can play it many times. I hope you consider further developing it as it was a bit too short.

Nice! The core gameplay loop is really fun and intuitive. With a little polish, I could totally see this as a popular mobile or web game.

Since the isometric grid doesn't match up to WASD, maybe include a WASD on screen to remind the player which button goes to which direction.

The SFX are great, but I think a backing track would complete the audio experience.

Well done!

Great idea and execution! I'm curious, you mention that you tweak the gameplay multiple times, was it significantly different from what's in the game?

Hey @artonix, totally agree, this is a huge mistake on my part, orthographic and WASD dont go well thogether. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks @tim77, I appreciate your feedback, I'm glad you liked the game, and yes definitely mouse would be better for this orthographic view, this slips through my playtest :)

Thanks @theseusinabottle, I'm glad you liked the game. #*#*! running out of steps on the last floor is bad, sorry for that haha, I wish I have more time to fix these edge cases, the problem was that it takes me too much time to glue the gameplay together and at some point, I had to choose between having sounds in the game or fix this edge cases and I picked the sounds. I was too ambitious with the scope of this game but hey, lesson learned haha :) Thanks for stopping by and write the feedback.

Hey @pseudohausen thanks for the feedback, yes totally agree with you, the input thing really slips through my playtest, I think your ideas of something on the screen just pointing the directions would kinda fix the problem after the voting process ends I'll probably implement that.

Hey @kroltan thanks for testing the game and giving your feedback, I'm glad you liked the game, and yes using the mouse probably would be a better idea, I even had a system in the game that I end up not using ready to do that, the fix is right in front of me but I let that pass

@zimny11 yes I did, I'll not say that the core would be super different but during testing I definitely changed my initial assumption a couple of times. For example, my initial intention was to create a game very focused on Humor, that's why I choose recover dentures as a goal, but I didnt have the time to create all the 'funny' assets I was thinking of, the main mechanic would be throw cheese to outwit the enemies (they are Rats btw ), this mechanic end up not even being implemented because the core I have at some point was enough for the game, another little thing that I changed was the shoe mechanic, initially the shoe would be a thing to give the player more steps, but playtesting I realized that the item was not compelling enough and it doesn't make much sense since the objective of the player is to go down and having a more steps would not be helpful enough to justify its existance (I think if the other itens are more powerfull I'll probaby coul'd keep the shoe like that), then I changed the shoe to give an instant move to the next floor and it feels much better, just feels right...
These are a couple of examples of what I meant, I was tweaking the gameplay up to 2 hours remaining for the deadline, the last hours was totally chaotic but I think the game turns out quite nice :)

This game looked and felt very nice, I really liked the way the enemies moved! I also liked the concept of giving the player a limited number of moves, it was difficult enough of a puzzle to make me think but not so hard that I got frustrated. I do think that the controls were difficult to get the hang of (it seemed like the arrow keys didn't map correctly to the direction that the cubed moved in), but once I got used to it it was very fun!

Nice art style, great concept I feel like you made something unique here with the move 3 steps and then go down a level and the shoe item. It was a bit confusing at first but I started to get a hang on it which made it a lot more fun. Great job with this one!

As other said, a bit hard to navigate when the isomeric view doesn't really match wasd, but apart from that this is a really great puzzle game, i love the mechanic of dropping down after a set number of steps, and the graphics is very clean, well done and effective in a superb simplistic way.

Great work!

The game was amazing, I really had fun, the concept and the da are simple but clean and well executed, and what is really impressive is that this game was made on its own! So I want to say congratulations to you!

very cool concept! The only critique I have would be that it feels a bit awkward to control with the keyboard due to the isometric perspective. But that's such a minor thing, it doesn't matter

Really cool concept! I haven't seen a game do something like this before! I was able to beat it after several tries  I could never get used to which way was which though - I wish I could just click on the spots with my mouse instead

This might sound ridiculous, but I actually got to the dentures on the first try... But I think I got some kind of bug, because I coudn't pick them up? Then I tried again and again and just couldn't beat it, so I really started to wonder how I got so lucky xD

After some time I got less confused and actually started planning ahead. So the second completion was 100 times more satisfying! Overall really cool gameplay and super polished game! If you'd add an endless mode I'd definitely play this more :D

EDIT: Something like more dimensions (maybe going back up, or horizontally) would be pretty dope too

Nice game mechanic, I found it quite challenging a couple layers down. Would be nice to communicate more clearly how and when you get eaten by the other cubes.

Wooow what a compo game.

The art is super clean, clear, and even have some nice animations to tie everything together.
The sounds are sparse but do their job very well. Maybe a bit more feedback when getting hurt would be great as stated by other.

The game mechanic is super smart, easy to understand and fun to play with!

Awesome job, thanks for the game!
