Majula Fall by maaxoom

For Ludum Dare #48 I made a game mechanic deconstruction of the section in Dark Souls 2, in which you have to jump down a huge hole in the hub area Majula. Your goal is to reach the bottom of the hole by compensating fall damage with your health potions and of course, landing on the right platforms.

I was very exited going down this hole, very good work!

Well, it certainly fits the theme! The controls feel great and responsive. I did find that being able to adjust my trajectory mid fall made it a little too easy at points. Also the healing animation actually moves you very slightly, which was scary to find out!

Nice game!

The game is very intuitive and well designed. The movement felt good and just the right amount of frustration with no feeling of injustice.
All those animations on the character look great.

Small bug with the potion though, drinking it make you go backward and I died twice because of that haha.

Good job!

Love the game, regardless of DS2 PTSD. The aesthetic is nice, and having to find the best ways to get down was a fun experience I've spent the past 20 minutes trying to perfect, definitely one game that gets you hooked trying to reach the end. The only thing I noticed that was occasionally an issue is I'd slide off after just barely landing, and because my momentum wasn't stopped, the next landing damage took out my full health bar. Otherwise, good design and a fun little game!

The operation is very smooth and the dark soul style death screen is so interesting.

Thanks :) It was SUPER clear what you need to do without any explanation. That's a very good thing!!

Improvements:
* Air control felt a little too much for me
* I had the feeling the chracter was moving further than I wanted, maybe something input related?
* I died once but I still could move (that's only more polish)
* put some soundeffects and music / BG sounds. They help a lot for mood and user feedback.
* There is no sense of progression.. when will you reach the end?

:)

This is a really interesting concept. I like the idea of having a controlled fall down a well or pit or whatever it is. However, it felt like often even if I fell to the next highest platform, I took a substantial amount of damage which seemed kind of mean since I couldn't have done any better.

I like how drinking the potion when standing at an edge makes you fall down the hole :) Very close to the original :) Made me cry just like DS2 :)

Awesome concept, although felt a bit difficult to control at times. The contrast matches the aesthetics, but it was a bit hard to look at. Regardless, had a lot of fun.

I found the lighting to be extremely dark which made it hard to see where the platforms were. (Playing on WebGL, Chrome on Mac). The concept could be fun, but I found it really difficult to play.

It was pretty dark but I could mostly see what I was doing. Great proof of concept! A little more time (48 hours is never enough) to polish it off with some sounds would have made it great. Good job <3

This is hard ! This might not be as relevant as in other games, but not everybody has a WASD keyboard, so the control scheme makes it quite difficult to play on my keyboard (I have to play twister with my fingers to jump and move at the same time) But props on making it compatible with controllers !

Art is minimalist but cute, I especially like the player character design !

Nice, this brings back my memories of DS2. I spent hundreds of hours dueling on the lava bridge :D I love that you used the Ornstein helmet and replicated the YOU DIED screen. Some Majula-like music would be more than welcome, as it was very soothing in-game. This way I had to play it in my head while playing. But overall, great game! Praise the sun!

It was a fun experience, i think you can still improve the character controller so it will feels even better, more polished.
Good job overall !

Very difficult and addictive game, it took many attempts but I managed to make it to the bottom. The only way you could possibly improve it is to reduce the player's maximum health every time they die.

Nice recreation of Majula's pit, this was fun to play for a while! Even though the mechanic is taken from dark souls, I think some visual distintion would help make it its own game if you decided to expand on this. I think a more arcadey style would work for it, with some brighter colors helping to make the platforms stand out more. It would also be nice if it was endless, so instead of trying to reach the end, you would just try to reach a larger depth.
