Mermaid Deep by mech_alina

[raw]
made by mech_alina for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

What's not chill? All the trash in the ocean. Help Xolani clean this mess up by going Deep. The more trash you collect, the cleaner the water, the faster your jump recharge rate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A/D or LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS for moving, SPACEBAR fordash. Chill 2D platformer. All art made this past weekend, first time doing pixel art. New game dev here, been making games for 3 months now! Code is a mix of C# and PlayMaker.
My first game jam! Mix of C# and Unity playmaker. Also first time doing pixel art. Had so much fun knocking this out and learning a ton.
The timing between jumps felt a little long to me, but I'm really digging the style and concept--very promising!
wow this was so fun! the graphics were really cute and fun, and the game played really well. i agree that the jump cooldown was a little bit long, but picking up trash speeds that up so its not much of an issue when you get into the game. great work!
The controls were a bit weird, I'd think a mermaid underwater would have more freedom of movement. I didn't move with a moving platform on the first level, but did on the second? Also, I was killed by what I thought was a piece of trash that I should avoid, there wasn't really any visual cue on what you should touch and what you should avoid.
The music is very nice. I love the pixel art and character design.
It plays fairly well. Had a slightly clunky movement system. The art was really good, I liked it alot.
Nice pixel art! Good game for your first game jam.
However, the mechanic to wait for jump was a little bit exhausting - takes a lot of speed from the game.
Still, keep up the good work.
Very cute graphics and audio, gets the retro feel down very well. That is besides the not-so-retro dialogue 😅 Having instructions presented in-game as a conversation was a nice touch. Bit short and easy but hard to squeeze a lot into the jam, and I guess you must've spent a lot of time on those lovely graphics! I don't think I needed the sunglasses to win? 😯 Theme interpretation was that going up to the surface is "deeper" from the perspective of a mermaid, did I get that right? 👀
I didn't like the movement at first but then I picked up a few trash and got much faster dash recharge and it felt much better. I also noticed the sound blip effect when the bar recharges which was helpful in timing my jumps without having to visually track the bar. I really liked the wall cling mechanic. I ran into a few bugs, I got stuck in the floor underneath the drill by the right wall in the 2nd level and couldn't get out. I liked the character building, very funny "Kay".
I like the idea of this game. Very simple. So it's going deeper and deeper up? :) Controls are little bit odd at start but later you can manage fine. I was wondering is this waiting time between jumps is necessarily that long. Sometimes it was quite challenging for me to distinguish which objects are collectable and which can kill you at first touch. Cute graphics! Nice job!:)
still pretty blown away by the pixel art and music, being your first time doing pixel art and all that. I dig the pay off of charging up the swim as you collect things but it was a little frustrating waiting for swim to charge at the very beginning. could maybe automatically get full charge when grounded? also very funny and charming, ending made me laugh out loud (as see on the stream!) https://youtu.be/exZFt8U6w5s
Looks pretty great, and the music is suitably chill! I ran into a few small problems (the drone enemy read as trash to me the first time, the "level end" spot read to me as a sea mine enemy), but they're relatively minor. Was it intentional that you could pretty easily wall-climb your way to the top of the levels using the edges of the map?
Nice job on a first game!
FYI: Seems like the game assumes a certain resolution and some of the graphical elements are thus cut off depending on the screen size. Something to look out for next time!
