Hyperspace Narwhale by styrofoamwaffle

[raw]
made by styrofoamwaffle for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

In the intergalactic waterways of deep space, the alien species known as the narwhale rockets through space at unearthly speeds and is capable of firing laser beams from its horn that could easily devastate any organic life form it touches. Fortunately, the narwhale serves as a vessel for intergalactic public transit. As the narwhale, pick up passengers and stay clear of the dangerous man o’ space as you traverse the universe’s many groovy waterways.

UPDATE: Thank you all for the feedback. I've uploaded an HTML5 build, and removed the Mac and Linux options as they were not properly tested.

For the best experience, I recommend downloading the windows version.

Thank you for playing!

This is great fun, the art is really good, the whole theming is fantastic. This is a very quality space narwhale game!

Was hooked by the laser-blasting narwhal, and was not disappointed!

I found myself moving in time with the music, which is always really satisfying! The graphics are cute, the controls are tight, the objective is simple. Really nice little game.

Great job! Nice visual effects and art style. It was subtle, but I saw that slight distortion in the background pulse with the beat haha. The controls were highly responsive; I enjoyed blasting space-jellies with the power of meme-magic.

So when I started I was like "cool, I'll avoid some squids as a narwhale for a bit" but never expected such an amount of epic to shower over me. The mood of this game with the music, and the shooting stars in the background, and the star power pulsing through my narwhale horn is off the charts. The end cutscene of the narwhale screeching through space when you finish a level is also so satisfying. This is awesome, great job! :whale2: :star:

Simple, but cute. I think this elicits a pleasant mood between the cosmic background, the emotive synthwave track, and basic game loop. It does a lot with a little and I ended up enjoying myself. Well done!

The tusk that will pierce the heavens?

Good mood. I was very surprised when I got to a new level, was about to stop because I thought I had seen the whole game but then I had to keep going to see the end. The levels are a bit too long, I'm imagining you wanted them to be as long as the music? Even though the game is pretty easy I was freaking out about making a mistake and having to start again. Level 3 kinda burned my eyes a little bit but other than that, nice game.

Here my Highscore :

![high-score.png](///raw/576/b2/z/4147f.png)

I like the effect transition between levels. Also, the fx when the player get 100% power is pretty nice and useful.

I would like a more animated character (make the fins moving) and different kinds of enemies.

Agree with @edmar-filho, levels are bit long.

Overall, it's a good job.

PS : a WebGL version would be nice.

I really liked the narwhale art and how the texture moved as it bobbed up and down. The lazer effect was awesome!

FYI I think the players score doesn't reset after you die. Not sure if it's a bug or a feature

Thank you all for the feedback and the kind words.
Thanks to @jaybaus for finding the issues with the Mac build. Unfortunately I don't have a Mac to properly test on, and the same goes for Linux. I have removed those options and based on what @duck-reaction said, I've added an HTML5 web build.

Thanks so much for playing!

Was very fun. One thing that could improve the game is making the background a little more different then the foreground :) very good entry

Neat prototype, but overall lacks animation and visual polish. Still, with such little time it's a good submission.

The background music is exactly what I would listen to in the background while working. Also love the design of the whale.

The game is very cute and the art style is amazing, the only feedback is related to the background at the beginning of the game, not sure why but it was hard for me to focus on what was happening in the game, maybe try to reduce the white spots in the background or lower the opacity, overall a good game tho!

Ended up playing much longer than I expected. Stopped when the webpage froze :/
It's cute, the musics are nice, the overall mood is very nice. Once I got the hang of the controls things started to run very smoothly and I got lost in the game. Well done!

Fairly standard gameplay that's tried and true, which means you can easily get into a flow while playing. Reminded me a bit of Robot Unicorn Attack, with the synth-y soundtrack and the cartoony character designs. Nice work, the start power is very juicy to use.

nice game!

The gameplay is super simple and well done. The music is awesome and carries the game!
The art is really cute too. The saturation and contrast of some background was a bit high for me, my eyes hurt easily and it felt a bit like playing on Lylat in Smash haha.
I really liked some details like the beat effect of the background following the rhythm.

Thanks for the game I had fun!
