DRILL AWAY! by Necdilzor

[raw]
made by Necdilzor for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

First LDJAM game! Learned lots of lessons and made something playable!

HOW TO PLAY

You're trapped in a cave that's collapsing! Your only chance to escape the debris from the right is to go deeper inside the cave and DRILL AWAY! There's no way to win, sadly. Try to get the highest score possible by drilling blocks!

Move towards blocks to drill them. Rocky blocks are harder to drill. ROCK blocks are too hard to drill! You must find a way around them.

CONTROLS

WASD or Arrow Keys to move. ESCAPE to close the game. R to restart on the GAME OVER screen.

very nice take on the Theme!
I'd just criticize that there is no delay before you start digging, therefor you are often forced to take a bigger bow around a dirt patch you dont want to mine.
And i also encounterd a little bug, wich led me to be moved into a tile, causing a delay (but i was able to dig myself out)

But it is MUCH better than what i made in my first GameJam!

Super cool game man, especially for your first try! The music is so cute lol loved it. I did manage to kinda break stuff, when running into a solid rock wall I was able to somehow skip past it lol In any case the game feels good and plays good, so it's a good game. Kudos!

Nice little game, the audio for the drilling sound is a little loud though.

I was drilling into some dirt sideways, up against a boulder, and when I broke the dirt I pinged off down past the bottom of the screen. Didn't die, game just kept going along.

The controls are twitchy and You drift sideways out of nothing. I also got stuck in some blocks due to moving after drilling

I scored 2800! :D Great idea for a game. Amazing. I see someone write that the music is cute, but I didn't get any music. For improvements I'd say that sometimes I start to drill in blocks I don't want to drill in, and then I'm stuck. Also, I'm drifting sometimes. Great job overall!

Scored 2400. The movement was quite glitchy.
A decent game for a first jam though.

Had a good flow to it. I found myself drilling blocks by mistake, so some way of canceling a drill would be nice. Or maybe make it to you have to hold the arrow against the block to start the drill. Also, the collision on the rocky blocks was sometimes wrong, and I would have to move after drilling the first 1/3 of it, or else the second 1/3 wouldn't start to drill. Would love to see more obstacles/dirt types!

This game kind of reminds me of an Atari 2600 game... the music in particular, being beeps and boops, combined with arcady-gameplay... perhaps an unexpected comparison, but hey.

Anyways I agree that getting stuck in the drilling animation seems kind of annoying. However, I think it is actually a potentially pretty good game mechanic. I had a moment where I got stuck into one of the pebble-dirt blocks when I was headed in a different direction, and because those blocks take three hits, I was able to move away after completing the drilling.

To me, this suggests the drilling animation as a pretty neat game mechanic. It's sort of like, you accidentally ran into this dirt, and now your drill is stuck, and your only option is to dig the block. It's an interesting way to force the player to move with precision, but it also opens up new options when you have the blocks that take multiple hits.

One problem I did encounter was somewhat glitchly collisions with the solid rocks. At one point I sort of teleported partway across the map, which actually helped me a bit I think--but then at somepoint I got really stuck and started gliding up rather fast and then glided off the screen entirely, at which point it seemed I couldn't do anything--I suppose I was stuck above the screen, maybe? I'm not sure.

In total I think this is a fine little drilling game. If you wanted more depth in it you could add more block types, maybe even drill upgrades, etc, but there were at least some interesting aspects in it as it stands.

That was cool! The moment the lava almost catch you but you make it is so cool! Nice work! :)

I won't be breaking any highscore records, but I drilled and drilled :)

It's a neat little game, and it really doesn't need a way to "win". In this kind of game, endless and "go as far as you can manage" are completely fine!
I really liked the bloaty animation on a drill when drilling. But I think I would prefer if there was a separate drill button to press. Right now, you can get stuck drilling a thing you didn't want to drill.

I encountered some bugs. Sometimes the game did not recognize that I can drill a rock and I had to reposition slightly and approach again for it to allow me to drill. And I surprisingly teleported to another position on the map twice. That was kinda fun - maybe you could include surprise portals under some rocks

Too simple for my taste. There are not so much action to do. Some shooting can help the sitution.
But nice try anyway. I spend some fun minutes.

Simple little game, i like it , but i was constantly hitting the wrong blocks , i felt like the drill was drifting a bit somehow and i got stuck and died, but i like it, looking forward for more!
