Porting / Bug-Fixes

  • Changed the way to scaling works so the game works on more browsers
  • Tweaked level loading to work on Firefox
  • Made game resize to fit the size of the browser

Also in adding the Firefox fix, I accidentally removed some levels! :/ But they are back again now!

Notes:

  • ~~This game has only been tested on Chrome! If you run into something that looks like a bug, please let me know along with what browser you're using.~~ Now should work in Firefox too!
  • Apparently the game doesn't play well with some adblockers. There are no ads in the game, so not sure why  but you might need to disable that to play the game

really clever idea! I feel like this could have gotten very complicated to keep track of everything, but you kept it simple enough to where that didn't happen, at least for me. I also think there are a lot of neat ideas you could go with this!

Also the music is great, having it change subtly across al the branching paths. Unexpected for a LD game!

Nice job as always :)

I beat it :>

Really cool idea. It got a bit mind-bendy towards the end (this is a good thing). Also the tune really catches on.

I'd say the biggest place this falls short is in its polish, like the movement felt a little stiff, and some particle effects would have added extra charm.

This is really just nitpicking though - you did really well. I felt like I went on a journey there.

P.S. I did notice a bug (using Chrome) btw. When you're like, really deep, sometimes the game boarder won't show. It only happened when interacting with the games in this room: ![chrome_2021-04-26_15-26-04.png](///raw/bab/z/3d2f6.png)

Above all, though, nice work!

I had a similar idea, but I couldn't think of an interesting twist to make the game fun and unique. This game is a really good example of what I was looking for. You went with one of the more obvious choices, but added a gimmick to it, to make it one of the most unique and fun LD games I've played. I like pretty much everything about this game. The controls could be a bit better, the small camera window made me fall to death multiple times, but other than that, this is perfect.
Nice job!

note: had to disable adblocker for it to load.

seems really cool so far, got the double jump. the shooty, the big jump, then got stuck (dropped my handhelds where i couldn't get back to them), didn't see a way to reset stuff, so I guess I'll start again.

came back and finished it! that was awesome!

great use of the theme.

enjoyed the music.

love the title screen of each game and how it gives you a hint.

could use a bit more to make it a more full game, maybe some more varied powers or combining powers, and the boss battle could be better, make use of more of the powers (i did it only using the shoot power, would have been cool to have to switch between powers to dodge attacks or something) but as a compo entry it's amazing! great work!

still jamming to the music.

Really cool inception game idea. I can't say I got to the end, but at least a few games deep. It seems like you really got a lot of content in, but I had some issues with the controls. A bit too easy to fall off without jumping and a few times having to jump out into the void hoping not to collide with bats. The holding on to various games to gain power ups was brilliant.

As a side note. The game would not load in Firefox for me, but that might have been me having restrictive settings. The console said that google analytics and your game js failed to load.

I was unable to play this game. When using firefox, the initial game didn't spawn, rendering progress impossible. On both Chrome and edge he window progressively zooms in on a point slightly above the console, to the point that you become unable to see what you're doing once you're 4 games deep.

The game seems perfectly wonderful, but that doesn't help when it's not working like it should.

I had lots of fun playing your game! Its innovative and it makes good use of the theme! I can see that there has been a lot of work put in this one

At first I did not know how to start the game, but after some random key presses I figured out I needed to press space-bar. Because you explained the keys very well, I thought I did something wrong :P

I went 4 deep and got stuck in one of those games (I think because I suck at platformers haha), luckily there was another cartridge in the previous level.

Well done sir, I like your game

Lovely idea, @jezzamon! I'm having technical problems playing it, though: On Chromium 90 on Linux, on a 1080p screen, each console opens a bit more to the right and to the bottom, compared to the previous one. When going in about five layers, the new console opens outside of the viewport, preventing me from finishing he game. Zooming the page in/out moves things around in confusing ways, and doesn't help.

Can I do anything to help you debug this?

Very cleve game, and well executed! Cute graphics and it was cool to have to go back in and out, and the game titles were great.

The platforming was okay but could have some more oompfh to it, or otherwise maybe more puzzles using the main game switching mechanic. The music was nice, but I found the jump sound a bit grating.

~~My mind actually melted a little bit from this. I can feel it running out my ears~~

Really outstanding.
When I did the first inception and the whole screen was taken over by the game :chef's kiss:.
Well done.

P.S. Music transitions! So very nice.

Such a cool idea! I can definitely imagine this being expanded into a bigger game and all the mind-bending puzzles you could have. Really great, one of my favorites so far. Would love to see this with gamepad controls. Nice work!!

@blinry Yes, there was a problem with the way the scaling was done before on some machines. I changed the way it worked so visually it's the same, but things are less nested, so hopefully it should work now! Let me know if you still run into the issue

Great take on the theme. I'm so pleased you designed the game around careful use of going in and out of games, it would have been easy to phone that in but I'm stoked you nailed it!! I also always appreciate a diagetic win screen :D Super good job!

This was a really fun idea; I like how you found a way to make the layers interact with each other. The platforming seemed fine to me, though I never could quite get the in/out/action buttons straight... I think it would have been more natural for me to use WASD with Q and E for in/out and space for action. I had a lot of fun playing this one and would love to see more of it! Great job!

I love the concept. I found the controls to be a little awkward. That being said I thought game play was pretty smooth and the level of difficultly was appropriate. Would love to see more.

What a clever little game within a game within a game! I had a lot of fun jumping in and out of different games to swap to the right abilities to pass each point of the puzzle. It did get disorienting for a while, as I would forget which layer deep I was in, but that added to the experience. The only thing that tripped me up were the controls; I felt that there should be a dedicated drop/pickup key and jump. But overall an awesome experience, great work!

@rosypenguin Yeah, I debated adding an extra button for that, but I was worried with the other three buttons it'd be easy to get mixed up. But a separate button might have been a good idea. Something to think about for next time!

Definitely an interesting game. It was hard to track everything that was going on on the different screens, but luckily the game isn't very punishing if you make a mistake. Very well done!

This was a really great concept. The level design and the music were great. The graphics were simple but adequate I think, and the overall experience was very fun. Thanks for sharing.

Oh man, this is awesome.... I love the Nintendo GameBoy, and this feels exactly like if you were to put 10 or so Game Paks in the GameBoy at the same time. (Technically impossible but whatever.) This feels like something that would play really great on a GameBoy Advance. (I can imagine how good it would feel to play it on a GBA, fighting the last boss with the D-Pad and A and B....)

As far as gameplay goes this game is genius, and the art and music are perfect for giving me that GameBoy-era feel. Your game last jam got a whole 4 trophies, I can see this game getting you more trophies to add to your LD game trophies collection!

###### (I love Kirby's Dream Land on the GameBoy. No way my LD profile pic could be a fanart of Kirby or anything. 😉)

It is such an awesome idea !
To be honest, I've been a lil bit lost in all this gameboys and dont realy understand why I had the double jump then lost it, etc... But with a lil more off polish, it would be a game I would love to buy and play ! Congratulations, this is so impressive ♥

Welp I didn't expect to stumble on such a near perfect game this late into reviews. I'm glad I did. The mechanic was brilliant, the execution was perfect. If I forced myself to come up with a criticism it would be that it would have been nice if the very end boss gave you a power after victory that let you like jump to the moon or something in the first screen. Something that brings it "full circle" as opposed to just the "you win".

If there was some sort of secret ending that I missed I'm sorry.

But aside from that, it really is perfect. The music, the art, the gamefeel, and the length all go together well. I could see this being expanded into a fuller game, where a player can carry multiple subgames with them at a time.

Wait... this was a compo game made by 1 person?!?!?

That is officially insane. I have no idea how you are this talented but this is beyond impressive. I will not be shocked if this ranks first in many categories. Well done.

Thanks everyone for playing the game and special thanks to those who left comments!

@maple Yeah, that bug was I think because I was pushing the chrome renderer to its limits... originally each game was nested in the previous game and scaled down 10x. Then the game would scale up everything by 10, or 100, or 1 000 000, etc. Turns out not that great a way of doing things haha. I tweaked it so that instead each level is scaled independently, which I think fixed that :)

@monkosum & @local-minimum Thanks for the comment about the camera and controls! In my post-compo version I tweaked it a bit so you can actually see where you're going to land. Also there's a death animation rather than you instantly respawning, so you can see what killed you too.

@fractalsunrise Yeah I wasn't sure about integrating WASD along with three other actions, because there's also some button for picking up this. In the end I went a control scheme inspired by PICO-8, but looking into other control schemes is a good idea.

@joe40001 Good news, you didn't miss any secret ending :P

That is a good point about having a more complete feeling ending. I sort of tried to go for that by rushing in a boss at the end, but I agree that it would be nice to get some bonus power or something for defeating it. Maybe a gameboy that gives you all the powers at once! Hopefully next time I'll have a bit more time for something like that

Sorry for rating too late but this is cool! Had a lot of fun. I think it would've been more fun if at the end when you had all 3 powers you had to go back and combine them rather than just fighting the boss, but.. compo time limit and stuff. Nice one!

These are cool games that can provide me with a good mood and pastime. But now I prefer to focus on the benefit. As a result, I began playing at online casinos. I'm looking for the best bonus slots, and this website has been extremely helpful https://grykasyno.biz/7-euro-bez-depozytu/ I find the best deals and increase my income as a result of reviews.
