Drill by Laurari

[raw]
made by Laurari for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Drag Drill, rotate and release to get to the Earth's core.

Make sure you don't run out of fuel. Drill is always working, so the fuel goes down by time, but also by distance, as it has to drill its way down.

Do not spend a lot of time digging hard rocks, as they will decay Drill's drill. The deeper you get, the harder the rocks will be.

And collect gems on your way down

Once you reach the end of your journey, a highscore will appear in the menu. Try to beat your own highscores (each category is a highscore, so you can try to maximize each one of them).

Comment down below your high scores, so we can compare and see who’s the best managing Drill.

How to play

Drag, rotate and release. That simple.

You can use ESC to open and close the pause menu in game.

Important! Quit option in both menu and game won't work in browser.

I love the graphics and sound, controls are a little awkward because of the camera movement after each impulse

Took me a few tries to get to the game, but once I got there, I did enjoy the gameplay! The camera could be a bit smoother, but otherwise a great experience!

took me a minute to figure out that you're supposed to send the drill towards the play button (very clever, i'm just silly). very fun game, great job!!

First of all, kudos for that marvelous tutorial just at the start of the game. I think it's the most clever way to teach the player how to play.

With that said, the game is awesome, challenging, fun and addictive. Perfect entry for this theme.

Congratulations!

Thanks @adil!! We were thinking about adding powerups you can buy with the gems, but any idea is welcome

Nice little game, very simple (in a good way), relaxing and entertaining. Sure it lacks content, but it has enough to illustrate an idea. I really would like to see it on mobile! With levels and powerups and stuff!

Thanks @shin0nome and @legolula
yes @alexascher I think it would be awesome in mobile, as the vertical screen could give us more depth to show, as well as adding those powerups (we're thinking velocity, levels of the drill where you couldn't dig certain rocks...) if you have any suggestion, please share them too

Awesome!! I loved the drilling mechanics, especially on a more open environment compared to the tile-based approach from other games with a similar objective. The playable tutorial on the menu screen was a brilliant touch!

I beat it on my second try once I realised I didn't need to avoid bones or stuff, so I focused on picking fuel and I reached the core :muscle:

Music was super catchy, and graphics looked nice as well. Congrats!! :D

@laurari I think that if you ever keep building on it you should make fuel only go down when shooting (not on idle). It would make it more about strategy than about being fast

thanks @ithildin

@legolula this is something we ended up adding on the last afternoon of the LD, because we thought it was too straight forward, but we'll give it another thought (without the pressure of the release xD) thanks a lot

Neat game! The little "tutorial" in the main menu is a great way to test things out and get a quick idea of how the game works. Also fun that that's how the player interacts with the menu. Wish the drag hitbox was a little bigger, I found myself having to reclick the drill a fair amount. Glowing crystals and sounds are great!

I wonder if there are any secrets/easter eggs around, could be a fun thing to have if not :D

thanks @anaxie-studio  there are unfortunately no easter eggs, but I thought about putting some random backgrounds, like prehistoric wallpaintings, a cave with a man reading... xD it is definitely something that would improve the visuals hahahaha

Great music and sound effects. They are not overloaded, of the required volume, well complement the game. Cool art, fonts, colors, I love how the game looks =) Very cool tutorial! Simple, understandable and clear. I think it is possible to make the camera movement a little smoother, maybe it could start earlier, so there will be more time for animation, and it will be possible to make a smoother motion graph. Very cool! It looks like a ready-made game for mobile. Good job!

A pretty simple game, I liked it! The only big thing I would suggest to improve is to make it a bit easier to know where the fuel tanks are; it feels like I would constantly miss them and it almost makes the game feel like it's up to chance, not strategy, whether you can get a good score or not. Regardless of that, the game's controls are fun, and I can easily see potential here for a bigger post-jam release! Nice work!

Minimalistic, but a good game. Simplicity goes well with game mechanics. I enjoyed it. A few reworks and there we have a full version idle mobile game.

Simple but fun! I really enjoyed playing it, even though the fuel could last a bit longer, at least in the first part so that you can dig a bit deeper (it's either just me or it can end a bit too fast..). But GJ overall!

I really enjoyed playing this game, the main mechanic was pretty easy to understand and control. The art and music are great too.

If you're thinking about a post jam version, maybe you could add some enemies. Also, I think this could really work in a 9:16 aspect ratio as a mobile game

Congrats for your submission!

Congratulations on the game, the arts were beautiful and the mechanics very easy to understand, one thing that happened to me is that I go too deep and don't have any more items or gasoline to continue, I just have to wait for the fuel to die, I will make some suggestions for future upgrades, placing a power bar so that the player has feedback of the applied force, placing achievements for reaching a certain amount of depth, aligning the camera, and maybe having to return to take him to his base to buy upgrades or stop at certain points on earth that you can do that, if you can give feedback on my game I will be grateful, I hope to see this project evolve, a big hug

@kotzi thanks!!! yes, it makes more sense in 9:16 than 16:9 xD we'll change that for future versions!! we have also been thinking about enemies, as well as random things in the background, like a cave with a man reading or prehistoric wallpaintings

thanks for all the feedback @etrealjunior we definitely added those in the list of improvements we can add

wow, such a good game! graphics, sound effects and music are amazing, they match for sure! The mechaninc is super cool and very smooth. I was able to doo 4000 Depth, I lacked fuel, which is another interesting mechanic for the game! good job =)

Nice graphics, great sound and I like the core mechanic. I did find it a little random though - it seems that the gems and the fuel appear randomly, so there's not really much skill involved in a play through. After a while it's a little like pulling on a slot machine, not knowing what you're going to get.

Really great game! Very well polished, nice graphics and UI, matching sound, nearly perfect!

I personally would have liked it more if the input was flipped, so that you "pull" the drill rather than using a "slingshot". And there was a weird effect where if you go straight down, the camera doesn't move far enough and you can hardly see anything further down.

I'd also love another mechanic to add more difficulty - maybe rocks that you shouldn't hit, or mines, or worms that chase you down. The lack of fuel doesn't feel threatening until it is too late.

But all in all, an excellent piece of work!

Wow, really cool and clever mechanics, well polished and nice music too! My score is 4541km with 1050 diamonds. Maybe it will be more fun and easier to play if can drag anywhere on the screen.

![Bildschirmfoto 2021-05-16 um 20.11.10.png](///raw/a93/7/z/4279c.png)

Funny game mechanic, only getting 5% out of a fuel canister feels a bit sparse though  I also like the music and the clean look.

Maybe you could try to allow the player to start dragging from anywhere on the screen because I feel like its sometimes a bit fiddly to click on drill.

Great entry!

Thanks @felo07 !! fuel is my worst enemy always heheheh

Yes @garys , it is random, it was one of the requirements we decided, because we wanted to make it different all the times you play. To avoid this we came up with the drill decay mechanics when you go through the rocks. Thanks for your feedback!!

@goldone we wanted to simulate the mechanics that minigolf games have but down instead of forward, but I guess that could be an option in the menu, we'll investigate it :mag: And about the rocks you shouldn't hit, this was the first idea, but quickly we realised that then it was easy to get trapped between rocks. Thanks for all the suggestions

Thanks @yword !! We wanted to keep the deeper and deeper theme in this mechanic, so you cannot go in less than certain angles on the horizontal, and it then made sense to limit the sides, as the goal is to reach the Earth's core :earth_africa:

Not bad @oadt !!! Yes, we need to fix the % because is super weird, but this will be in the future  And about the point from where to start, our QA suggested it too, but the way we programmed it, it was impossible to fix, we had to redo everything on that class, so we decided not to do it during the LD time xD Thanks for your feedback

I have reached the core.

I believe it is too dark. I understand that it is gameplay element but it hides almost everything and you need to choose random direction. If there was some clues where fuel might be, it would be better experience.

Anyway I have reached the core as I mention before. So it is playable.

Also I love menu mechanic.
