The Unfathomable by ondy1985

A little rougelite inspired game where you must dive as deep into the trench as you can, avoiding the various deep sea creatures or blasting them in half with your laser beams.

Beware: the deeper you go, the more horrors you'll face. Rumor is, there are giant squids lurking in the deep...

You will fail. But your bathysphere will be able to salvage wrecks from your previous attempts, so each failure will give you upper hand on your next runs.

This game was made as part of Ludum Dare 48.

* Controls: *

* Mouse * - movement Bathysphere will follow the cursor. Cursor above the bathysphere will slow you down, while the further the mouse is below the bathysphere, the faster it will go.

Laser beams are automatic.

Nice game, the slicing is fun :) If I could move the submarine up and down, it would be even better, but I still had fun playing it.

@lajbert you kinda can, if you have your mouse over the submarine, it will fall slower :-) But maybe I will add possibility to go upwards, but the camera will stay where it is, so you want be able to return back, you would just have the ability to get above the enemies.

@locustjin thank you!

honestly its amazing, it has such simple mechanics yet it made me play it a couple of times. loved the upgrades because it made me want to try them all and keep playing.. the controls are intuitive, art is simple but it still creates the correct mood for the game.. i loved it !

Hahaha, love how simple and witty this game is. It's like the dark and ominous cousin to our game 😂

Good job with this submission. I liked the mood of the game and the addition of the leaderboard.

Cool art style, I have one question, why can i kill sharks? :D better is to avoid them than to kill them, but that just my thoughts, when you upgrade your weapons it's so much easier to use this function.

@genpaku you are right, it's easier to avoid them with the basic weapon. Once you have one or two upgrades you'll cut through them easier. Also, the deeper you go, the more and bigger enemies are spawned and it gets harder to avoid them.

Simple yet cool game! Really like the leaderboard so you get a bit of satisfaction when you are in the top #10. The roguelite aspect is cool too.
Well done!

Seriously though, game is really fun. Art and soundscape are great too. Good entry!

I reached the depth of 897 meters! Found the game fun, but for me it lacked further instructions inside the game on how to play it. Just after my run I saw that I could control the height of the player character. Anyways, great entry, congrats!

Having a saved system for player's scores was a really great idea. got me to play more than onve just because I wanted to beat other people's scores! good work, would've been nice to have had a little more info in a tutorial or something that explains getting more oxygen.

That was fun, and the leaderboard was a good idea as I couldn't stop playing until I was at least top 3.
I didn't understand the oxygen though. Is there a way to recharge it? Is it from your previous wrecks? I saw the bubbles coming out of what looked like a wrecked bathysphere but I didn't have time to go over it to try and get more oxygen.

@villanelle @arctiform-llc @skleembof
I agree, tutorial is needed. Yes, the point is you can land where the wreck is and upgrade weapons, health or refill your oxygen. I thought it adds a little bit of strategic element, because you have to die a few times so you have enough wrecks to upgrade and refill oxygen on the way down. But sadly it's not communicated inside the game in any way.

Great little game. Leaderboard integration is really awesome, especially for a LD game. We had a similar concept in our game too

I like the idea, it's very fun to play. Agree @gno-evenimente , leaderboard integration is very impressive in LD game.

Good work :thumbsup:

What? Is this really a public high score display?? Wow respect for that.
And also cool gamemechanic. I would've found it a little cooler, to activate the beam with space or something, or maybe reload the health/ energy meter over time if not used, so the game doesn't finish that quickly.
I found it really atmospheric and scary with the sunken ships in the background and the loud whale sounds. And really much content with the highscore list, and upgrade thingy. I liked it!

@johannimations thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The reason the laser beam is always on is that I want to work on it post-jam and make it playable on mobile phones, that's why you only need to worry about driving the sumbarine. It's designed for one-finger touch control.
