Craftmine by Cal

[raw]
made by Cal for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

The aim of the game is to get as many points as possible, to gain points you have to mine ores, and kill slime!!! To move left and right use the "a" and "d" keys and to jump press the spacebar. Use the left mouse button to attack and break blocks, to open the inventory press and hold "e", then to upgrade a given attribute left click on the upgrade. The player can upgrade attack strength, attack range, attack/ mining speed and also recover health from the inventory. The deeper you go the more ore there is to mine, but the slimes get stronger and more frequent, so be careful!!! The player will take fall damage if they fall too far, and will take damage if they get too close to a slime, you will die when your health bar is empty. Hope you have fun, we enjoyed making it :)

Nice game, fits the theme well. The screen shake and particle effects are very satisfying.

Nice game, and the small fx and animations are simple but work well together. Pretty good job !

This is a super good game, you guys did a great job on it! The game itself is super fun to play, a lot more so than I though it was going to be if I'm being completely honest, and the graphics on it are super cute. The only real criticism I have on it is that it does get kindof easy after a while, but I may just be saying that because I like tougher games in general. Eitherway, it was super enjoyable and would love to see more from you guys!

Great game. All actions feel impactful with their fx so even though simple it was really fun to play.
The sounds are good, but a bit repetitive in the long run. Great entry.

Really fun! I love the effects when you're mining, it feels very satisfying. The pixel art is gorgeous as well. As far as complaints, it felt hard to read the range of enemies and my attack, there was also no pressure on the player to dig. The game is solid as is, but I feel like you could really ramp up the speed and craziness to make it something really special.

I espacially love the animations of the game. Really well done. The pixel art is solid. Gameplay is also fun for some time, but after I had every uprade I dug straight down for some time and was a bit sad that there seemed to be no goal. So a difficulty curve like stronger slimes or variation in behaviour or a goal after some time would improve the game a lot in my opinion. A display of the depth you reached would also enhance the player motivation. Another thing I find odd is that you can attack slimes through walls what makes the game kind of easy when you build a tactic around it. Also the attack ranges (player and slimes) were not really clear. a bit more feedback would help a lot (perhaps an attack animation for the slimes with a bit delay and a range indicator for the player (like a small circle of light or something like that)).
Sound is solid. And it produces kind of a nice rythm while mining. But after some time It gets a bit annoying. Totally fine for the length of the game though.
Just one minor thing I noticed. The jump is kind of floaty and the fall down animation looks a bit wierd because the miners feet are shaking.

All that said: I enjoyed the game and think this is a solid entry.
Hope the feedback helps

Not super nice on the ears but quite fun to try and reach new high scores, im not the best at giving feedback but I enjoyed the game and the mechanics were well implemented.

Nice game, fun to play. I liked the concept a lot but the enemies were really easy especially with being able to hit them through walls and they barely jumped when I was up higher than them. After I had gotten all of the upgrades I could basically just endlessly dig down without worry except for healing up every so often. It seemed to be generating infinitely which is a nice touch. Could have a bit more variety in what you can do and the enemies you face. I think it would have made it more interesting and harder if instead of being able to upgrade anywhere if shops or an upgrade station or something spawned every so often instead of being able to heal and upgrade whenever. Or a different ore or something for healing at least. Overall great game though!

Pretty fun!

Managed to play for a good chunk of time before (dunno if the game was the reason though) my whole computer froze and force restarted itself. Mac version by the way.

Welp, went for another try and this time it froze again after just a few minutes of play. It also took a weirdly long time to launch. Maybe like 5-10 seconds to actually see the pygame intro text and then at least the same for the game window to actually pop up.

The upgrades didn't really feel like they offered anything else besides making farming a bit faster. The enemies posed no real danger even in the beginning. The combat looked very weird and felt kinda awkward since both the player and the enemies had a hidden range stat that was in no way visually represented.

The actual sprite work of the character and tiles looked pretty nice but the overall look was kinda hindered by those black "breaking" lines which just looked messy and too dominating being a higher pixel size. And the tiles not connecting properly didn't really help either. The animations also looked quite nice but there were some weird jumps and frame skips all over the place. On my second try I played more close attention to the color palette which after the first try I remembered being a bit too dark and dirty to my liking. But it was actually quite pleasant and all those dark lines were just muddying it down.

The special effect side was spicy. There was just about perfect amount of screen shake and the combined with the particle effects, they really brought some nice oomph to block breaking and combat.

The sound effects felt a bit jarring. I don't dare to go try a third time to investigate them closer but they left me with a feeling of pretty much every action making the same sound. Really would have needed some variation and of course even a simple background music hides the monotony of sounds pretty nicely. And the sound effect for walking at least just didn't work at all. If you do a walking sound at all, it needs to be very very subtle with some variation too since it's repeated so often.

Anyways, good job! Too bad I couldn't play more of it to see if there was some kind of end, or even anything different to what I already experienced.

a short but sweet experience that had me wanting more! i did find the jumping sound quite annoying and distracting - with a bit more polish on upgrades/combat this would be something reaaally fun that i could dump hours into haha

I've downloaded your game (win edition), but there isn't any .exe.

@mighty-mufflon-games That's a shame, it might be an antivirus thing?

I enjoyed the game, but wished there was a little more challenge or different types of enemies or treasure. It was pretty easy to max out everything. It is also possible to hit enemies through walls.

Maximum upgrades are pretty easy to get, and after that there is no goal. Still have some fun, good job!
