1000 Fathoms by Dom De Re

[raw]
made by Dom De Re for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

A 2-Player Coop Game

(But you can play single player and just leave one of the players alone, the spawn area is relatively safe, you can also try controlling both players yourself)

Grab a friend and brave the depths, reach 1000 Fathoms for... Treasure? .. or something?

I don't know I didn't have much time to make the goal or the motivation clear...

Controls

Orange Player: WASD to move, Space to "fix"

Blue Player: Arrows to move Enter to "fix"

Alternatively you can plug in controllers, D-pad to move and A to fix

Goal: Reach 1000 Fathoms (The sub descends automatically, its more a survival thing), but if the Water level reaches 100%, you will die

You can't attack the monsters, just avoid them

Fix the leaks by "attacking" them

Graphics are really well done here and I like the use of theme. Gives me FTL vibes. Managed to beat it.

This is a really cool foundation for a game -- if you plan on developing it further you could add different enemies that require the player to make more complex pathing decisions (like a squid that inks certain squares, making them impassable briefly) or more movement options for the character (ability to jump over walls).

Very nice graphics and polished controls.
Found it somewhat difficult to control 2 characters at once, but I guess that's part of what makes it charming!

Enjoyed it!

I loved the visuals and the frantic game-play of repairing holes. Seems like this would be a great co-op experience (not sure if you intended for it to be or just for one person similar to Brothers A Tale of 2 Sons). The abstract pixel art looks wonderful (I especially love how the ship fills with water). I just wish the itch version had a larger screen size!

thanks for all the feedback! Yeah its definitely intended to be a coop game, i kind of wanted to get something out of it that i could play with my kids, i should make that clearer

The artwork is good. Sadly I can't found someone to play with :joy:

Enjoyed playing your game. Next time I will have to recruit a partner.

Great job! I played by myself but used the other player to stand on the opposite side in case something came up over there :) Enjoyable game overall

Really like the aesthetic and the sound effects.

Graphics and sounds fitting well and the basis of the gameplay is well done. I also like the coop element.

Loved it! Such cool Among Us vibes and well executed. What would have been nice is that before enemies come out there is a small hint as otherwise one dies without being able to react. Great gob!

nice and simple. spritework was neat and I'm a sucker for smears. You've got a solid base, now you got a lot of room to expand on and flesh out

First Ludum Dare? Very well done! I appreciate the exploration of co-op gameplay. The visualization of flooding was interesting as well.

@pvg thanks! Yeh it was my first LD. If I had more time I was going to use a dissolve shader on the water tiles instead of fading them in but sadly I ran out of time :(

I liked the way the water spread around the sub, and the hole-patching core mechanic was simple, but fun. I can see it being even better with a second player.

The audio was a little uncomfortable to listen to. Mainly the water flooding in sound. There was a lot of static noise. Slapping a patch on was satisfying.

I think you have a nice core concept here, and well executed. Good job!

Really liked the visuals, the audio was a little loud but good. Game functions well, I could manage to close the breaches through walls though

Pretty efficient game. The graphics and sfx are really good and fit well with the game.
It's an interesting choice to make a multiplayer game for the jam, well player !

Nifty game, thought it was fun! Didn't really feel that much of the theme, but I thought the gameplay was great

it was actually kind of fun as a multi tasker... didn't realize it was 2 players, i just controlled both at once and somehow managed to just scrape by. Could see this being a really fun multi-tasker kind of game

Efficient and intersting . The water effect was pretty nice if a bit confusing at first

neat little game! was definitely tricky to try to control both characters :)

I got "success" in the end, but it was kinda sudden. You could make plot interesting if you'd make enemies appear in waves and/or have some banter between characters about what is happening. And maybe some boss.

Liked the clunky walk sound effects. But it took me some time to understand that water leaks and water on floor were those. At first I thought it was some bubble and some spreading gas.

Thanks everyone for the feedback again! Lots of advice here if and when I get around to expanding on the concept!

Even if your startup logo is short, I still think it should be skippable. Otherwise was surprisingly fun in singleplayer if you controlled both characters.

Love the fact that you can play it with a friend. Nice game for playing as two!

Two player game is a bold choice for a jam, but it pay off !
This game was nice, love the sound design of "fixing".
Great work, keep it up ! :)

I can just say the same that already mentioned above. Cannot feel the real value it can has as I cannot play with a second fellow. It looks good, and promising, but cannot rate it in this form. Good job anyways!

Good times despite being a solo player - I tried to play both characters with one hand each to varying levels of success haha :joy:

Gameplay is simple but fun and tense, I found it funny you have to 'slap' the leaks to make them stop :joy: Good job on the submission!

Pretty risky to go for a 2 player-game in a game jam :)
it's neat
tested it on my own so but less thrilling than what you were aiming for
but it works
great result for a 1st ludum dare, sweet :)

Cute game, i liked to pop all those bubbles. A little small to see on html5 and on the end the wall blended into the water (but since the map is small is easy to remember). Was quite a challenge to try to play both player by myself but after few games i found that the water level was easier to control this way. I let the "arrows controlled" pleyer to the right and the "wasd" controlled player to the left for an easier management. Well done :-)

I liked the small pixelart and the sound design. I think this game would work better as an endless survival, instead of needing to reach 1000 points.

Small bug, when Player 1 attacks, it changes to a different color.

Good game!

Neat little game, very good for a first Ludum Dare. One issue: the fix hitbox for the player can be tweaked a little, if the hole was just slightly behind me I couldn't fix it.

Nice, a 2-player game! I had to play solo, but it was still fun! Simple but effective gameplay. My only minor piece of feedback is that when the water levels rise the blue walls sort of blend in, making it a little tough to navigate (especially with the screenspace being so small). Great entry!

That is good game but it can't be fully enjoyed with an azerty keyboard. Still good job for your first LD ! graphisme are nice and the game is clean

I love that this is 2 player!

The Sfz background was too repetitive, sounded like white noise too much, would have liked it at a lower volumn compared to the rest. The clunking metal steps were great but again a bit loud would have liked them mixed a bit lower and maybe a few more varieties of sound.

Cool concept, I think you could have maybe done the map a bit more zoomed in I think with a bit more detail on the walls. I found myself leaning in to see.

Also the movement of the player character didn't seem to respond as I expected, facing the right direction to swipe was a bit annoying at times as it got more stressful.

Would be nice to be able to attack the monsters also some variety in the things 'attacking' the ship if you fleash this out.

Overall though good job!

Hi there,

The graphics were good, and the game itself fits the jam's theme. However, I found the game a bit tricky to play, the audio was quite poor, and the goal of the game was not really clear. A decent try tho.

Pros: The game was well made and all the mechanics worked great for me. At first I didn't understand what to do until I read the description, but after that it was smooth sailing. I played it by myself, but I can definitely see how this would be thrilling to play with another person.

Cons: Music would definitely add a lot to the pace and mood of the gameplay. On top of that, the SFX for the punching kinda was creeky(?) at times, like it was just loud overall.

Apart from that, overall, the game was fun and well made in the given time frame and theme. There's room for improvements for the game to be built on like more enemies and further graphic work. However, the game is enjoyable nonetheless, great job!

Nice concept. Two player coop seems much more fun than playing alone. Music and sound can be improved, but apart from that it's minimalistic.

Hey man, very fun game. Nice concept and art, the graphics are very cute and the sound effects are neat. Its nice that we can play with a friend, those kind of games are so much better with somebody to play! Just two things: you could add some music, it will very relaxing to play this listening to a chill music! And the wall color confused me sometimes, I couldnt see, because it was blending with the floor, maybe to put a darker color! Overwall nice entry, congrats =)
