Brutus The Naked Mole Rat by Krisum

[raw]
made by Krisum for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

"Help the naked mole rat Brutus avoid the terror invading the surface. Gather tubers and give them to the workers in you naked mole rat family. The tubers give the workers different amounts of energy which let them dig deeper and deeper tunnels to get away from the inevitable downfall."

This is my first "completed" game, working on another one. First jam, and my take on the "Deeper and Deeper" theme at Ludum Dare 48. Just started learning game developement, constructive criticism is always welcome.

I hope it isnt to buggy, it is supposed to run in fullscreen, i had a bug it sometimes did not, and made the mouse "aim" bugged out because of that. Worked after restarting the game.

Have a good one!

Constrols:
WASD - movement Mouse - aim
Mouse left - Throw Bronze Tuber
Mouse Middle - Throw Silver Tuber
Mouse Right - Throw Golden Tuber

ESC - Main Menu
F1 - Main Menu
F2 - Toggle the music playing in game.

Done in GameMaker Studio 2 (GML)
Aseprite - Graphics and animation
Bfxr - Sounds
I did everything by myself except the music so i made it possible to turn the music off.

Music is royalty free and made by "YouFulca" over at https://wingless-seraph.net/en/material-music.html

Change Log 2021-04-27 14:42

Minor Fixes in the new Build "BrutusMINORFIXESLD48.zip":

Fixed correct sound for the Golden tuber.

Fixed correct energy amount on Bronze and Silver tuber

Fixed tuber spawner to not go out of the room, which resulted in no tubers to pick up which ended up in not being able to progress further. And alot of unnecessary objects spawned outside the game view.

For a first game this is pretty well done!
The mechanic led me to just collect tuber for a long time while there were almost no enemies around and then feed everything at once, which floods the whole map with enemies. Maybe it would help to have a rather low cap on how many tuber you can carry?

Nice, I liked the game. Graphics and sounds were on point as well as the gameplay. The only thing I've missed was some way to deal with the "terror". Maybe some some item that when picked up in time would wipe the monsters out since at the greater depths the map was pretty cluttered :D

Anyway, that's my two cents, great entry, good job!

I had a great time on it, congrats on your first game!
Unfortunately, I have a strange middle mouse button that didn't permit me to throw silvers tubes, so it didn't work for me on those.
I agree with the latest comment, you should limit the number of tubes you're allowed to have to balance the game better.
For the graphics, I love you Mole Rat animation, so cute and smooth <3
The Audio was great too!

@nikl Yea as it is for now the spawn amount of the enemies are tied to the tubers fed, now that you tell me how you played the game I see that was not the best idea:P A cap seems like an easy fix! Thanks for playing and thanks for the input i will keep that in mind and do some tweaks later on!

@pavel-smejkal Yea i had some ideas with different family members beeing tied to some food-combos that would trigger and clean out some enemies, Maybe i will fix something like that. Thanks for testing it out, and thanks for input=)

@titaninette Thanks for the feedback! Yea i see now not having a cap was a miss, I just never thought of the cheese tactic :P I am going to add a cap or something for a updated build. Glad you like the mole rat animation =) Thanks for playing!
