Beast Of The Woods by AgentParsec

[raw]
made by AgentParsec for LD33 (COMPO)
(PIXELATED BLOOD WARNING, if that matters)

You are a terrifying beast, stalking humans that venture into your woods. They have a flashlight and a gun, while all you have is your claws... but that's all you need. Sneak up on them and kill them before they can kill you.

Killing all 18 wins the game. How many can YOU get?

CONTROLS: WASD for movement, mouse to look, shift to run. That's it. Touching a human kills them.

TIPS: Running makes a lot of noise, but is good for closing the distance quickly when at close range. Standing still is completely quiet, even if the human is very close to you. The cover of the trees will be vital to your success, especially with harder enemies.

(SOUND PRODUCTION NOTES: I produced the footstep sounds by crinkling brown packing paper together with a plastic bag. The gunshot is a handclap, slightly modified. I made the monster sounds and the kill sound with my own voice, plus some modifications.)

Really quality stuff, fits the theme perfectly. At first I thought the Hunter was psychic, but running draws attention from a mile away.

Wow! Nicely done. Really felt like I was the monster! And the hands :P Nice touch.
Felt like there could have been something else to do instead of just hunting. Sounds A+

Hey, playing on Linux here, and the controls get stuck. I press W once and I'm walking forward indefinitely (S has no effect), same with A/D and Shift.

Really cool game wish I could play it the way it's meant to be played...

This was great - love the music, use of lighting, and the awareness of the victims. Great mood and polish on keeping mood!

@cgmorton -- Not sure why it's doing that. I don't actually have Linux to test it on; I just exported Unity to Linux, which has worked for me in the past. Don't know why it didn't work this time.

I like the concept of this game, stealth hunting. It's actually pretty difficult. The only issues I have with the game is sometimes the enemy just always knows where I am when I wasn't even that close. The art fits well with the theme and I like the darkness presented in this game. (Usually, scary games are bright enough that you can just see everything).

Amazing job! This was one of the better games i've seen. It was a little annoying with the human almost always following you no matter how sneaky you were, but it was very fun. Great Job!

By far the best compo entry I've played from any LD. It's like reverse slender man. It felt great sneaking up to murder humans. The AI felt super realistic - and the strategy was immediately apparent. Your ability to build tension is quite remarkable.

Good mood, lots of interesting little details (like the shadows on the trees) and an interesting mechanic. A tiny bit claustrophobic/nauseating for me, but that can't be helped with first person titles.

Loved how well you setup the horror movie mood. I really did feel like the monster in a monster movie. It was delightfully creepy and I couldn't help but be uncomfortable with the amount of glee I got out of it. The aesthetics, sounds, and lighting were all amazing and contributed to spooky horror vibe. Awesome job!

I absolutely loved the mood. Controls weren't working well (they'd get stuck after pressing them, so I couldn't strafe), and I didn't get far, but I still enjoyed it.
The only thing lacking was a pounce :)

Fantastic polish to the game. Did a great jobs focusing on the stealth experience. That said, I'm not a fan of being forced to restart from the very beginning. It's easy to get lost and not find any humans. It's also very hard to sneak behind trees, so a mechanism to tilt the camera so that you can see what's behind would have helped. Perhaps easing the difficulty on the third level might improve the experience. Overall, excellent job! Awesome use of audio, too!

This was an amazing job for the scope that you did it in, you put a lot of effort into all the places that mattered most. I loooooved the little monster hands creeping onto screen to indicate range, and what you did with the music for the same. It was an elegant way of both creating mood but also giving the player important gameplay information at the same time. My only note would be that the effect when you successfully kill someone is a little unclear, and when it happened the first time I thought I had been killed. I think the fullscreen red flash makes me think "I have been injured" because it's as though something has happened to my own vision. The fact that the human whips around to see you at the last minute is really cool but also adds to this confusion (did they shoot me?). Perhaps a scream or finding another bit of feedback and saving the fullscreen red when YOU are shot. Not sure what that could be. That was really the only confusing point. Wonderful job with the mood and all the foley!

Nice! Only suggestion I'd have is to allow for restarting on the same level as opposed to forcing the player to repeat all of the previous ones again.
