Call of the Abyss by Rein

[raw]
made by Rein for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Legends tell of a wondrous treasure at the bottom of the abyss. Charge into the deep and bring the treasure to your people... but beware the creatures that roam in the darkness.

Navigate your submarine (using WASD) to the deepest part of the abyss and claim the treasure for your people. Catch exotic fish, octopi, and useful trinkets along the way and bring them to the surface as salvage to improve your navigation abilities.

Can you reach the bottom?

Hi! Thank you for this game!

It is quite easy to learn and allows you to relax. However, I did not have enough description of how the effect works. I can only find out when I come to the surface.

But the biggest problem is that there is no menu button and no exit button. Are you making me play forever?! :-)

Good luck to you!

The ambience was great, and I enjoyed the art. The sonar looks particularly slick! I do think the submarine could have been a bit smaller, or the gaps in the terrain could have been a bit bigger.

Really good entry, and the sonar is fantastic to use. The sound was great to set the mood and the lighting was great, especially on all of the detailed underwater features. I was so careful finishing the game, returning to the surface with only a sliver of health remaining. Nice job!

The sound and lighting really set the mood :) sometimes the hook would flop around a bit when I got stuck in a small cranny - but I really enjoyed having to angle it right to catch the correct object and drop the wrong one. Great job!

I'm happy I played it all the way through. I was a bit unsure what to do when I started but figured it out, some in game prompts would help a lot. Fantastic graphics and fantastic atmosphere

Love the creepy atmosphere of the water (sound effects/music and creepy things flitting just out of range of vision do a great job here) and the premise is immediately understandable. I do wish the body of the sub was fitted with lights, not just the headlights, because often times there'll be rocks nearby that I can't see even after buying the light upgrade. I also wish there was some way to control the hook besides momentum of the sub's movement, perhaps using the mouse? But that might make it complicated, so I'm not sure. Overall an amazing entry and one I enjoyed a lot!

@nice-gear-games thanks for the feedback! We deliberated a lot on how to handle the hook and ended up with what you see. I think we need more in-game explanation of things though. For example, the sight radius upgrade is basically what you're looking for. At max level (about 36m) you don't even need the headlight or sonar since the range you can see is so huge.

Great visuals! I loved the feeling of exploration. The slow movement speed of the submarine made it a bit tedious to pull things back up from really deep areas, but carrying a huge octopus around on my hook was quite satisfying!

The Hook was an interesting and unique addition, great visuals and solid sound, and some of the creatures were pretty spooky to come up on in the dark, well done!

I really liked the audio and the feeling the audio conveyed in this game. I really didn't quite understand the controls though. I could hook things but after hooking them all I could do was let them go again. The sonar, the lights and the ink were permenantly off and didn't respond to button presses so it got quite dark without being able to do much about it except if I just stayed at the surface. So looking at your gifs, either something was broken for me (web-build in Firefox on Windows), or I simply didn't understand how to play the game.

@local-minimum Thanks for the feedback! You need to carry things back up to the surface in order to unlock upgrades. It's unfortunately hard to discover that feature without seeing it happen once first.

cool idea, and looks nice :) I didn't get that the boost key is [space] at first (I should have read the description tho)

Whoa, this game is so feature rich! I especially liked the unique method to get upgrades and the physics of the
hook :D

Also the mood is on point, and the less upgrades you take the more intense it gets, making for a nice challenge for those who seek it!

Love the scale shift as you get deeper. Started to get hard to find things deeper down though and I missed the sonar early one.
Nice graphics, excellent mood, right on theme.

Loved the game, nice graphics and superb mood. The only complain I have is that it's a bit tedious to pick up one creature at a time and having to go back and forth, I gave up on upgrading once I had the sonar, I just dove straight down with only the boost lvl 1, 1 ink and 20m of radius. I was scared I had to start from scratch if I destroyed the sub, thankfully it wasn't the case! Congratulation on your game!!
