Deeper Space by NaraJeamfry

[raw]
made by NaraJeamfry for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

You have been sent on a mission: to go as deep in space as possible.

Unfortunately, your ship is rusty, old, and not really fit for the mission. You'll have to do your best to get as far as possible without the ship exploding, running out of oxygen, or just running out of energy.

Interact with the ship and its many systems until both of you are able to just go deeper and deeper!

Game concept

The idea of Deeper Space is to provide you a big ship, with lots of hidden systems, triggers and secrets. You don't really have any knowledge or tips about your ship, so you will have to find out how to sort out all the multiple problems you will find on your mission.

We designed the ship and the concept to reward replayability and optimization, given that there are multiple events that will make it harder to survive the longer you go on. There is also a random component, giving every game a different set of challenges by throwing different events at different times. This also makes a "Challenge of the Day" mode possible, sharing a same timeline of events and allowing you to repeat the same level over and over to find the best strategy.

You will also eventually find lots of secrets, like shortcuts, helpers and lore.

The Jam build

This has been our first Game Jam together! None of us do really have any background in game development, as we are mostly 3 enterprise software developers, a frontend designer and a graphic designer... but it was a lot of fun and we enjoyed all the time poured into it!

This also means, unfortunately, that the Jam build is just a navigable ship, with access to one "minigame", and no way to actually start the game.

We're actually really proud that we have a decent prototype, where we could test minigames, the scoring system, menus and GUI! We will probably keep updating it, at least until it's really playable, but we wanted you all to know that what was uploaded at the end of the Jam is in that state of development.

Build Controls

Controls: WASD to move around the ship. E to interact and do actions (currently available: asteroids minigame on the command deck).

Thanks @cubex!! This was our first attempt ever at a Game Jam together, we're proud of having something that at least you can open and explore :dog: we'll be working next weeks to at least have something playable

As the other commenter said: I had trouble getting things to work, but both art and sound design are great!

This game has potential but without things to do it's quite boring, also i couldn't understand how the minigame with asteroids work, but art and music are good though.

The objective of the game was a little bit unclear. I think some more game mechanics could have improved the experience. Well done on the art!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to interact with anything or do actions with "E." Perhaps I missing something?

I tried but wasn't successful in making it work. I've bookmarked it, so if you update the game, I'll check it out and edit this post! :)

I couldn't really move for some reason -- my character moved really slowly. Not sure if others have that issue?

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you had fun on your first game jam! As also an enterprise developer, I can probably relate -- I hope you found it a refreshing break and enjoyable programming experience as I did, and hope you get involved in many more :)

Interesting prototype. Graphics and music create a great ambience. Given the limitations you described, I'll focus on technical aspects:

This is what the title screen looks like on my screen:

![what i get [-3].png](///raw/b21/z/41f03.png)

Also, the character gets over walls in some places:

![char over walls [-3].png](///raw/b21/z/41f04.png)

The HUD is white, so it's very hard to see.

Panels seem to be interactive from the other side, probably not intentional.

Good job on what you achieved!

music was fun, and after I learned what to avoid and what was ok to touch, I realized the blue disks were all I really needed and restarting after each death made the amount of times I died more bearable. maybe in a future iteration, look at destroying objects instead of knocking them around? at the moment all objects collide with eachother (rigidbodies?), but destroying them with the ammo instead of knocking them out of the way would feel more satisfying. maybe make it so that only the asteroids and the satellites can bounce off each other? and then maybe the other collectables be able to pass through them? I kinda wish the currency didnt increase so slowly, but since the items to purchase are also kinda low cost, i guess it works fine. do you have any plans to continue this game and add more upgrades? if so, maybe add a second coin type to more dramatically increase the currency to afford better/expensive potential upgrades. overall, it was simple, fun, and has room to keep adding to it!

I like the art and music for this! I couldn't get any of the interactable objects to work except the asteroid shooting interface at the front of the ship (which did freeze my game when I did try it), but I appreciated being able to explore the ship and liked the sprite art. I can see a cool framework here where you do lots of tasks around the ship to keep it safe. Nice effort!

The graphics and music give it a cool mood and the idea is cool but without anything to do this is off course a bit boring. The Asteroid shooter crashed the game for me though. Good job on finishing the prototype but it needs a bit more to really be a game.
