Jackhammer Uncle by good.enough

[raw]
made by good.enough for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Warning, I got sick Friday night, and this game was born from the incoherent musings of a fevered mind.

Proceed at your own risk.

Play as an uncle on a jackhammer, digging your way to eternity. Beware of the purple monsters, and try to collect the sparkly green things.

The goal is to collect as many green jewels as you can before reaching the end of the world, where you will forever fall, deeper and deeper into the endless void.

The controls are abominable.. Basically, you lean in the direction of the mouse pointer, and the farther away the pointer is, the higher you bounce. While the mouse button is held down, you go into jackhammer overdrive mode. There are keyboard equivalents... kind of. Use the arrow keys- left right to lean, up to jump higher, and down for jackhammer overdrive. If you get stuck, sorry.

I decided to opt out of audio because a couple of friends helped play the vibraphones in the park. However, it was only on that one track in the background music, so it was only barely over the line.

Exactly what the doctor ordered, a jet-powered jackhammer. The sound of popping the purple monster is pure gold, you must have had a lot of fun making the game, didn't you :)

I got a high score!! 2hp and 6 gems. That's good, right??

As an uncle, this game really resonated with me. Dev is right - controls are bonkers not great, but it almost contributed to the whimsical experience.

I found myself always using the booster because the bouncing was too erratic otherwise. This resulted in a few 'breakthroughs' into open caves that launched me super fast and made me laugh.

Wow, that was... something!

The overall creative direction was hilarious, and the wacky control scheme added to the effect. That said, I do wish it was a little more forgiving (specifically, easier to move side to side). Occasionally you would get trapped by monsters with no way to realistically get through without taking damage, given your character's slow digging speed.

The art was nice overall, especially Uncle Jack. It might have helped to use a more consistent line thickness (for instance, the enemies look like they were drawn small and blown up, so they have thicker lines).

Nice work for 48 hours!

@jeremy-ryan Hahaha, thanks for the review! I know what you mean about the line thickness! I have been pretty obsessive about this in the past, and in Paint.Net, it's pretty easy, but in Krita, which I used this time around, line thickness is quite variable and easy to change, so even on the main character, I had difficulty maintaining stable line thickness.

And yes, I scaled the enemy up like 400% because it looked too cute small. :P

@harrison-dunn Yep, full on jackhammer overdrive mode is the best way to go! Btw, I don't know if you noticed, but there is a small easter egg at 6 gems.

@glitchman + @mausimus, Thanks, I'll go and play your games next!

@good-enough wait... the face changed, right? To a realistic photo? Or was I just imagining that?

@harrison-dunn Yep, that's it!

My brother said that anyone who's watched Stranger Things would know who it is. Any ideas?

i....... feel like i'm in a fever dream..... which makes a lot of sense, reading your post

sucks that you had to opt out of audio. i would've given it a good rating with how it completes the eerie atmosphere, along with the sound of the... blobs (?) dying and the jarring way the music cuts out when you die. IT'S JUST LIKE REAL LIFE. jk but can you tell i had a lot of fun experiencing this game

anyway, i second a lot of feedback above: the controls being hard to work with (although if u honed in on this, u could make a rage game that's entirely about hard-to-master controls), the jackhammer dude being cool. additionally: i felt like u should've been able to kill the enemies with the pointy end of the drill. also, gameplay felt a bit pointless. why not give the dude a cool present at the end. like a brand new jackhammer. despite all that, nice job on the jam :)

Well, that was unexpected. Gameplay is not as awfull, but it's very hard to find your way left or right when you didn't take the time to clear larger than needed to go down. I guess it was fun to make
Good job
