Falling Through Love by CinderBlock

[raw]
made by CinderBlock for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

A game about falling deeply in love.

But the deeper the two potato-people fall in love, the more difficult the game becomes! The purple bad-looking platforms represent arguments (didn't have the time to properly implement them :frowning2: )! 3 arguments, and you're broken up! That's it! No more tries! Well, unless you press the replay button.

Like many others, this was my very first Game Jam ever! I did the whole thing on stream at https://www.twitch.tv/cinderblockcreates (well... except the last few hours because I was getting pretty tired)

Feel free to come by and say hello!

While it was pretty tiring, it was certainly a blast! See you guys again in October.!

Controls:

Use A & D to control the male character, and the Left & Right arrow keys for the female character

Make sure to not bounce into each other, and if you do, be ready for it!

You can play this alone, if you think your hand-eye coordination is up to snuff. Or grab a partner, and you can each control one of the characters!

I love the concept! The art is just wonderful too. The gameplay could have used a little something extra though.

At first I thought this was a co-op game and then I realized I was controlling both! Cool concept and some neat quality of life features like displaying your previous high score as a passable line and a smooth menu-to-game intro. I found myself sticking to walls a bit too much and occasionally a single small hole was difficult to pass without bumping but still a great entry with some fine pixel art. If it's true that you've only been making games for 3 months, then this is wildly impressive.

loved the art and trying to control 2 characters at the same time, works well for simple games

Well, I'm affraid that I'm not better with your game than mine. 463.84m.
You did very well for a first jam! This is not easy, but this is fun and polish! Good job!

My spouse and I played this together and now our relationship is stronger for it <3

The art is beautiful here! It fits the theme and it's got a great feel as well. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but we started using the potato-bounce to push each other out of harm's way. It's easy to imagine more abilities or bounce combos to extend gameplay further.

Congrats on the first game jam! This is very well done

@hwaet thanks for the kind words! I may revisit this idea in the future as a networked party game. Quite honestly, I thought the game would have the opposite effect on relationships if played together haha, but I guess the "relationship" feature was never fully tested ;)

I love the pixel art, I played it alone and it was fun but a little hard, I bet it would be fun with two players too!

Some games like this one are really tall for some reason and don't fit into my screen. I thought it might be for mobile then, but it says the game is not designed to run on this device

Idea is awesome though, artstyle too. Charaters bounce really hard from each other and sometimes you need to fit them into one hole which i found near impossible

@ariorick yeah the size was something I could have worked a little more on. It was like a last minute scramble, and a "good enough" haha. The game is certainly not responsive either lol.

Ha Ha . nice one. Beautiful graphics. I didn't game with my GF since we would have a fight   Very satisfying bump effects and cool animations. I like!

As others have said previously the size of the hole when there is only 1 is quite difficult. I also think that if you mess up both characters you should only lose 1 heart instead of 2 but thats nitpicking. Good execution although it seems I'm not very good I only got to 293m.

Very cute art! Love the animations on the flapping clothes and the cute potato protagonists. Love all the little particle effects too, they might seem like a small thing but I think it just adds that little level of polish. Some music and SFX would have been nice but that would have just been some extra icing on a solid cake.

Like others have said the only slight tweak is single holes due to the amount your characters bump off one another, if this was reduced a tad I think it would do so much to make it an overall more fun experience. But on the flipside, when I did get through a middle hole I was so pumped haha.

Oh and I really love the game remembers how far I got last time and shows it with a nice little dotted line, that's a real nice touch.

Great job on your first jam entry and can't wait to see what you make in the future!

Superb. I had a great time playing it. I did feel that the single holes was very difficult due the "bounciness" of the characters.

Well done and keep it up!

What a fun and original idea

The art direction is really good too.

If you were to add some nice music and sound effects, as well as more levels, you could have a very good mobile game in your hands!

Fun game, sometimes it would be impossible to not take damage due to the characters' bounciness when there was one hole. Overall good game !

Love the art. For a first game jam game this is quite impressive. Sounds would have made the world feel just a little more alive. There were some parts that seemed almost impossible to have the people fall through and the amount of speed and control is a little limited. The bouncing off each other is a nice addition and definitely ups the difficulty. A high score page would make this more addictive and I can see this on mobile.

Really great entry for your first game jam! I love the little potato folks. It would be cool if it started slower and sped up a bit as you get farther!

Interesting idea and I like the animations on the main characters. I didn't think it would be this challenging but its like the game plays a trick on your brain because of how you control the individual characters. Maybe I should've played with a second player for some local co-ops. I think visually it looks great and sells the point of falling down...Sadly, I had to break up with my girl...she kept pushing me into arguments. lol Nicely done

That's a cool idea, loved the art, i would love to see how you would visualize the arguments :D The gameplay was solid, the bounciness was rough especially on tight spaces but it was part of the challenge, it would have been interesting to see some kind of synergy btw the characters maybe have some debuffs like one character is stunned and the other has to bounce him off, or have them do some movements in sync or something like that to emphasize aspects of a relationship through gameplay. Overall it was very impressive being your first compo game, great job!

Loved the art! Im just horrible in games that needs to move 2 character at same time, but, good job!

The idea of the game was kind of funny that if you die you ended the relationship but for me it was a bit too difficult. Controlling two characters is already hard so the game should be quite forgiving I think. Also the fact that the bounced of each other hard made it even harder and I also thought that it didn't really fit well with the lovers idea. I thought that when you brought them close together they would maybe hug for a few seconds. This could actually be a mechanic to make it less difficult to have them stick together for a few seconds and then bounce of, this would make it tactical about when to use this. The graphics were nice but some music would've really helped the mood but I understand that you didn't really have time because of doing the compo . Overall a nice game which needs some difficulty tweaking and maybe some more mechanics to keep me interested. Good job on maming a well polished game in the 48h!

@shakedimus The hug idea is actually really good! It was not something that occurred to me during the 48 hours lol. I completely agree with your assessment, the game certainly does struggle from "I'm the dev so the game feels a lot easier than it is" syndrome.
