the sunken place by RomeRomey

[raw]
made by RomeRomey for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

this is the first game that i've made without directly following a tutorial step by step.

the theme deeper and deeper made me think of the hypnosis scene in "Get Out." so i made a platformer where you play a personification of your own consciousness trying to escape the sunken place.

currently only the source code is available because i am waiting to download the export templates for godot. will update with the playable versions asap!

UPDATE, 40 minutes after submission close): the HTML is live!!

Good job on "your first" game! :D
It was really cool! I loved the suttle background music and the risk of having to start over at every jump really kept me on my toes! Lengthwise the game could have been a little longer, so I'm looking forward to your full-release. ;) In which you add diffrent levels/sections, diffrent gravity on diffrent levels, moving platforms or anything else as crazy. :)

Fantastic first game! Your efforts on that audio filter were not wasted! Sounds great!

Hi,
the character reminds me a lot of Downwell. I like the premise and I especially like the audio picking up the closer you get to the end. That plus knowing that the fall is deep gave the right amount of pressure.

I initially though the jump is too floaty but upon getting higher and having to jump on platforms directly below the platform I'm on made the jump feel kind good.

I recommend adding being able to jump off a platform for a few frames after already stepping off it (it's called coyote time), especially since you have very small platforms towards the end. I recommend looking up Matt Thorson's Strawberry project. He has Celeste-like physics in it.

Overall I enjoyed this a lot!

Great job -- I really liked your music / audio design. That really added to the mood.
I think a few variations on the sprites would make the levels more interesting. Although the jump mechanic was a little different, having the jumps be so long seemed to add to the tension and matched the feel of the game, so I think that was a good call. Great work making your first game from scratch. I enjoyed playing it. Hope to see what you come up with for future events.

@romeromey Very simple fun game. As long as I'm aware there are 3 chunks of the level 2 premade and the middle section procedurally generated. I think that it would be better if the player had less control of the jump, think something like "Jump King". Anyways, cheers and keep it up!

@hestrateja it's actually all hand made! but i had a pattern that i followed for creating that middle chunk because i was running out of time (sort of like 1 tile per 8x8 square, then 2 tiles, etc). i'm planning on updating this one ludum dare is over so i'll definitely check out Jump King!

What a banger of a track, absolutely loved that. Sad that there is only one level which is relatively short. Mechanically, the game is not that interesting. Static platforms, a jump and moving left and right is all it really is. Moving platforms, spikes and/or a double jump can make it more interesting.
That being said, the main game is there and for a first game it's more than enough. Good job!

Oh hi there, person I definitely haven't jammed with before! This was neat, though like others have said, I wish there had been a bit more of it. The music was great; but then, that's not entirely surprising, is it?

Awesome first game, congrats on finishing! Very subjective thing but I would have appreciated some WASD controls in addition to the arrows as opposed to just the arrow keys. Good job.

The gamepay and the audio getting more and more intense gradually is a great touch!

This was really well executed for such a simple and fun game! I got to the last platform and died. So close!!!

Killer difficulty curve! Loved the simplicity though. Your notes about the music track made me want to keep going - but I didn't get to hear much (because of said difficulty curve)!! Well done for a first game!!! :D
