Find a cure deep in the forest before you fully transition into a werewolf!

Please give feedback! I will make sure to return the favor for everyone in the comments.

transform-sm.gif

Objective

Collect 5 golden berries and given them to the wizard. He will give you a potion that will cure you.

If you fail to do this in time, you will fully transform into a werewolf and will not be able to return to human form.

How To Play (Click the moon to start)

  • The deeper into the woods you go, the more golden berries there are
  • Avoid the huge wolf. It takes 2 hits with a rock to go down
  • If you look carefully, you can see the wolf peeking out of the woods. Throw a rock at its eyes to scare it away

  • You can also press buttons frantically to punch and kick if he is on top of you

  • Transformed limbs will give you bonuses to movement speed and throwing strength

Controls:

  • WASD or ARROWS to move
  • AIM with RIGHT MOUSE
  • THROW with LEFT MOUSE (you have to be aiming to throw)
    • Ctrl also if you are using touchpad
  • PICKUP / INTERACT with SPACE / E
  • Q to cycle help text

The Wizard can help you | Don't let this happen | Find these berries :-------------------------:|:-------------------------:|:-------------------------: screen.png | screen2.png | screen3.png

Great sound design, properly terrifying when a wolf appears.
I found the wolf eyes very difficult to see against the background, especially when they looked very similar to the 1 pixel gaps in the treeline (which could have been intentional?)

This was fun. I do wish it was a bit easier to see the wolf or hit him with rocks, though. It's quite challenging to hit him with 3! Despite that, I had a good time. Nice job!

great parallax going on with the trees. The transition of your character looked great as well.

The presentation is great! Both the art and sound design are excellent; the moon filling up as the timer is one of those lovely touches that makes an experience memorable.

I'd love to see this fleshed out a bit more. The rock throwing doesn't really feel great and having to run all the way back at the end is a bit tedious.

All in all a solid entry. Well done!

Really nice art style. The audio and atmosphere is really great too. I think it's cool how you turn into a stronger player by slowly turning into something you don't want to be.
I like the parallax background :)

I think it's cool that the wolves shake your berries/rocks off to pick them back up again.

I had no problems seeing the wolves' eyes. Throwing the rocks is definitely the best strategy vs trying to land 2 rocks before getting bit.

Only gripes I felt was the long backtrack to the wizard.
Also I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong, but I gave the wizard the berries and then the potion spawned, but I wasn't able to pick it up off the ground with my pickup button. Then the darkness consumed me, rip

Solid game :)

@cammin The eye visibility was a bug I fixed since other comments, and not being able it drink the potion is a bug I just pushed a fix for. Glad you liked it (WebGL only so far), thanks for the feedback.

Artstyle is awesome and just description by itself made me smile a little. I really want to play your game but i don't have a mouse! It means I can't press two mouse buttons simultaniously. I think you can still add some touchpad support as a bugfix, if you havee the stregth after the jam

Very nice game! The sounds were amazing, and I loved the way you became stronger as the game went on, but getting too strong would make you lose. I found the trek back to the wizard appropriately stressful, and I reached him a few seconds before the full transformation, which was satisfying. I think the throwing mechanics would have worked better if you could just click to throw at the mouse, but other than that, great entry!

Lovely pixel art! I quite like the parallax effect of the trees. The sound is also quite nice and really helps set the mood. The gameplay is a bit simple, but if anything this works in the game's favour. My only complaint is that I couldn't work out how to start the game at first, but that's mostly my fault for not reading the instructions...

"You managed to pull yourself out of the darkness". Nice game, great mood, I like the pixel art! The sounds were really terrifying, especially the wolf noises (self made? wow!). It is a bit hard to get the wolf to let go of me when he appears, maybe I did not do it right, but otherwise great entry!

Really nice game, loved the art and audio, mood was on point, i feel like the wolf eyes could show for longer, because it's pretty hard to actually throw the rocks at him, gold berries aren't really noticable if you don't know how they look, first run i didn't see any since i didn't expect them on trees, the click on moon thing wasn't really obviouse, just a simple highlight when we hover over it would help a ton, i feel like the gameplay was a bit too linear, like the player didn't had much control over situation, there was very little actual strategy, or skill needed, i feel like some extra obstacles would help with it, the concept of turning into a wolf was pretty neat alongside throwing rocks

Really well done. Got turned into a werewolf both times i tried, managed to get all the berries but not make it back. I had some difficulties scaring away the wolf, the rocks didn't seem to do anything sometimes when it was in the woods, but once it tried to charge you I found it quite fun. The atmosphere was awesome, and the sound really added to that. Great game:)

This was well-done! I loved the audio, and was very impressed with how you created such a good walk/run animation with so few pixels. The balance between staying low on the screen to maximize your distance from the wolf vs staying high on the screen to minimize berry-collection time was interesting.

Well done on this jam. My main advice would be to simplify the control a bit: Instead of requiring players to click on the moon, just allow clicking anywhere and tell them they can click anywhere to move to the next screen. Instead of having to right click than left click to shoot, just have them hold and release left click. Instead of requiring input to create the potion once the berries are owned, just have it autocomplete once you get back to the witch. Otherwise the game looks really nice and the mood is on point.

I definitely had moments of panic when the wolves came out the first few times (having you stop moving during aiming was a great decision) - loved that part of it, and once I figured out how to spook the wolves I was able to cure myself.. barely in time!

Really great animations given the amount of pixels you were working with, and sounds were super solid. A strong compo entry!

You've created a really great atmosphere here, really classic campy werewolf vibes. Your chonky pixel art is fantastic, and the depth of the forest is *muah*. The transition to turning in a werewolf on the character is subtle as well which I really like. My favorite is probably the sound design, it didn't need music, and the sfx were all consistent (both in sound and volume). Really great job.

That was an AWESOME game!! I'm sweating!
You nailed the autmosphere and the way the art of the character changed over time was so good. Took me a few tries to really get it, but man-
Awesome job.

The only feedback i could give is just the controlls are a little hard on track pad. It might be worth it to make "throw" something like space when you're holding the right click- it was difficult to swap between moving with my left hand and then finding the control key when that's not a button i click super often.

Rreally really awesome job tho. Amazing game :)

I liked the interpretation of the theme. Haven't played a werewolf game in forever, so that was a nice unexpected surprise.
I beat the game on my forth playthrough. On the second and third, it seemed that throwing the rocks only made the wolf come out quicker. Even in the last playthough, I threw a rock, it started chasing me, so I let it follow me all the way back to the wizard.

I'm a big fan of the aesthetic you've managed to pull off here. I very much agree with @gibss, I couldn't figure out how to start the game, or how to throw rocks on my own, which was a bit of a shame, but pretty minor for a Compo game.

Out of curiosity, did I have to mouse over items when pressing E to pick them up? I couldn't tell, but I sure always did.

Great small contained experience, felt myself immersed as if I was the character scanning the tree-line for those glowing red eyes. Once you have the wolf legs you seem to move exactly the same speed as the big bad wolf, so you can keep running back to the end once you have your berries (as long as you have a couple of rocks to fend them off at the end).

The sounds and atmosphere were also very well done!

Super solid game! The graphics were cute, and sound was well done! The mechanics were pretty solid as well. I think the 'standing-still-to-aim' part of combat was a tad redundant however; In my eyes standing still seems to suggest the need for accuracy, but this game was moreso about speed. Yes standing still to aim seemed prudent when a wolf was lurking in the trees, but on the chance they chased after me, I was right clicking only for an instant; I might as well be able to throw while running. Overall however, super fun, well polished game! Well done!

Surprising amount of depth to this game! The rock mechanics were fun to figure out. I didn't really get the idea of your body parts changing, but I did sort of notice the difference. Overall REALLY good atmosphere and I love the idea of having to really watch the scenery to figure out when the wolf will come out. There were a lot of tense moments where the wolf was next to the berries and there's juuuuuuust the right amount to make the game have a lot of exciting pressure but not be easy (took me two tries.) Really well done!

I loved the mood of this game. I'm using a trackpad, so it was a little hard to press keys, move the cursor, and click the mouse buttons at the same time, but that's probably my fault for not having a real mouse. I might buy one just to play more of this game!

An excellent LD entry. I didn't quite understand the point of the two icons next to the rock/berrie counter, but I didn't seem to need to either :)

The degree of completion of the game is very high, which makes me feel the huge benefits brought by simple creativity. The screen is simple but it fits the gameplay very well, and the pixel details are well performed. It is really a great game!

Very well put together experience. Overall you did a solid job! Perhaps if you were to evolve this more you could break up the gameplay a bit with other actions. For example setting traps or having enemies that attack you in different ways such as something that moves fast that you have to dodge.

Simple, but polished, enjoyable game. I liked how the protagonist model changed while his disease progressed. The graphics are simple but fit the game well. The music and sound design really help the mood. 10/10, would get bitten again. ![xJHgGdU.png](///raw/342/3/z/4122d.png)

Great atmosphere and great art (although maybe a few more pixels on the main character haha). I think the aim could use more of a purpose but I had a lot of fun beating this.

Nice atmosphere for the game. One thing I found weird was that berries "respawn", so instead of 5 I only collected 3 and on the way back got my other 2. Also, didn't notice any increase in berries the further in I went. Still, thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Good little game, with some pros and cons.
Don't get fooled by the long text in the Cons list. I'm trying to come up with solutions to improve these points.

Pros:
- Graphics and animations are nice, especially with the changing character modell. Not all games need millions of pixels
- The sound effects are selling the mood very well, but the howling is a little bit too loud. Maybe adding some volume sliders woudl have been nice.
- Clear objective

Cons:
- Not clear what to do, when not reading the itch.io page. There should always be a tutorial in the game and as nice as the idea of having the moon as a start button is, it is not obvious for the players and some will struggle right there. I was reading the itch.io page and I knew what to do, but having the instruction on the wizard is weird and takes away preasures time during which the timer already starts to run. Some kind of movement tutorial would have been nice, followed by a cutscene of the player getting bit by a werewolf and the wizard then telling the player to find the berries.
- Thowing stones feels weird and I'm not sure how the scaring away works, because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The arc is also a little weird. It makes sense for the stone to not get thrown too far, but it felt a little short when trying to scare away the wolves.
- No real challenge if you realize that you just have to watch the trees for the yellow berries and as soon as you have 5 you return. You can't get killed by the wolves and fighting them off is super easy. There should be some consequences if the player is not doing this fast enough.
- No true pixelart. The biggest issue here is the rain which is clearly not following your pixel sizes for all the other elements. If you make a pixel art game, it would be nice if you stick to the minimum pixel size, in this case: the stone, and not have any object with a smaller size. In addition, the background is not following the pixel raster because it is moving continuously, instead of pixel by pixel. Give the pixel perfect camera of Unity a try ;)
- I have no idea what the square UI elements are. Some clarification would be nice. The long one is obvious after picking up a stone or berry.

That's it from my side. I hope my feedback helps you improve your game and any future game you will work on.

Have a nice day.

@backurio Thanks for the detailed feedback! I agree with all of that, and it sounds like it is in line with the majority of other players too. I am pretty happy with the experience of first playthrough and lose, second playthrough and win. For a jam, that is exactly the kind of game I would want to play. My thoughts on what any future work would involve is basically keep all the visuals, audio, mood elements and completely scrap the mechanics. They don't seem extensible and this concept could be applied to lots of different game types.

This was pretty cool! Graphics were simple but they worked. My only complaint is how long it takes to get back to camp after venturing into the woods. Really like how the game visually indicates your time left with both the player sprite and the moon. A solid compo entry!

Pretty unique take, but the gameplay was not very engaging. The rock throwing wasn't intuitive, having to aim first seems to be unnecessary. I also still don't know what the icons on the bottom mean. But the mood is on point, legit got me to jump once when the wolf showed up. I like the pixel art and the audio does it's job very well.

The game is really fun, the only advice I have is that it can be difficult to pick up items because we have a hand in the mouse and the other one within the arrow keys. Since we can't throw items without aiming it would be nice to pick up items with the LEFT mouse while we aren't aiming. I love your game overall good job !

cool game! I liked a lot the pixel art graphics (i'm a fan). The sound was good, it didn't distract me but also made feel the rainy forest atmosphere, the only thing was a bit loud was the wolf. Other than that... congrats, great compo job!

Great entry! I found that the best way to go about this was to simply ignore the wolves and just run for the berries, so perhaps the attack should be more useful, as in, the wolves being more aggressive or the chance of actually dropping berries aftera wolf attack should be higher?

Anyway, I had fun playing this, and it was very appealing in both terms of audio and visual! :)

That is an interesting idea , but I couldn't figure out how to fight the big wolf , so never made it in time . The fight mechanics were unclear to me , it's sad because the game looks fun . This game could use of a more simple fight mechanic (just make trow rocks easier and more impactfull) .

Loved the parallax effect you managed to pull off. The audio and art work well together to help set the mood of the game. There does seem to be a few bugs in the game. The one I noticed the most was not being able to pick up items every once and a while. Wasn't too sure how to replicate. Maybe a hitbox issue?

Either way it is an amazing game. Congrats!!!!

I didn't understand I could throw rocks to the wolf (I thought it was other type of berries, like purple berries), so I guess I should have read the explanations or add a tutorial in the game. I liked the mood of the game, going deeper and deeper in the forest to collect berries. The game is pretty simple, but it does the job. Nice work :)

The attention to detail is really amazing for a compo! I don't know how you pulled it off alone, but kudos!

Graphics are simple and nice, clear and consistent and get the job done. And I loved that you included the transformations in the graphics - both the character model and the icons. The only minor suggestion improvement to the graphics I have is the colors - it could be darker, more bluish-grayish in tones to create the ominous atmosphere of a full-moon night. Would go well with the whole werewolf theme. And if you'd put a row of trees sticking out (like 3/4 length) from the bottom of the screen, we would feel more like in walking through the woods, rather than just on the edge of it.

Soundscape is spot-on. And again - amazing attention to detail here as well, with the footstep sounds changing as your legs transform.

The gameplay itself feels fine. Controls are responsive, and I didn't meet any bugs. It took me a while to figure out the best positioning to throw a rock at the wolf without being noticed first, but I did and afterwards I was a rock master

Nice art and game! I probably suck at it, since I did not manage to win, but I loved the controls. I think it's polished for a compo game. I loved the theme and I agree with others in that you can make it even more terrifying by making the ambiance darker. I did not like that you throw anything at the wolf (not just rocks) and hence you have to go pick up more berries if you get attacked. My only other criticism is the problem with Opera GX/Chrome and HTML5 not loading. Great job overall!

The pixel art and audio were excellent. When throwing rocks at the wolf, I feel like there could be more of an indication of whether you're successfully scaring it off or not. I found I was throwing rocks and not knowing whether it was doing anything or not. Does he take multiple hits? Am I just not hitting the right spot?

I also was unsure whether I was to head back after collecting all 5 berries, or keep moving forward. If it is to move back, it can feel like you're in an impossible situation if the moon is nearly full and you have a long way to walk back after getting the last berry.

I wasn't entirely sure when the limb changes were happening and what benefits I was getting out of them.

The game was definitely a cool experience, and well made within 48h. Well done!

Ok, my partner asked me to make a let's play video, 'cause I was playing your game with some self-made mouth music and wicked expressions. I just loved the way the main char rises his hands, even if there're no stones, so I danced and sang "na-eh-na-ah-na-ih-neh-na-eh-eh-ih-na-ih-neh" while hunting for berries. When the wolf, i frantically clicked and shouted him to gtfo. However, at some point I felt, maybe it's a she-wolf haunting me, and the fate of the hero is actually to become her mate and bed her under the full moon in nasty woods. So, I wasn't disappointed with game over. Think they're romancing each other out there now...

Such a great entry! Very complete experience with outstanding atmosphere, movement and gameplay. I'm a fan of the art style and the controls. Also, the way you explained everything in-game was very charming. Awesome job! The graphics and sfx work really well together. Throwing rocks at the eyes didn't seem to work for me, I had better luck waiting for the wolf to come at me. Loved the atmosphere! That wolf's gonna give me nightmares. Art style is great. Audio is great (except the howling is a tad too loud). I agree with some of the people above that the throwing is a bit weird, and just the interactions with the wolf in general. It wasn't obvious that the moon was the start button, and I had no idea I was supposed to return to the wizard, so on my first playthrough I just ran to the right non-stop.
